@Skis878 also the frame was different as the oil intake was directly into the engine and not carried through the frame. There were alot of differences between 04 and 05
Pretty much any mx bike from the past 20-25 years is modern enough to have fun on and not be too much less capable than your friends who might have newer bikes.
Yes! You very much can! After putting some money into it to freshen it up. I went racing with my '96 CR500 that I bought from a fellow soldier fo $2500, then got the suspension serviced, Gold Valved & resprung for $500, added an oversize front brake and pads for $125 and fresh tires & tubes ($220 total) . So for a total investment of almost $3400, I had a race ready machine tailored to my riding style.
I got it in '06. He had bought it with his enlistment bonus, but never rode it before he was deployed. I had just come back from deployment and was getting ready to go home. When I got home, I drove over to his state and bought it. It still had the fuzzies on the tires, but had obviously been in storage for a while. Bought it, brought it home, cleaned it and was riding that evening.
@@dr.hugog.hackenbush9443that's awesome. Although, I think the $1000 idea goes out the door when you start putting money into it. That said, you can definitely find deals and put some elbow grease into a bike vs buying "new"
I still have a 2004 Yamaha YZ250f with only about 12 hours on it. I love it just never get to ride it much due to deployments. Its a great bike, but it doesn't handle like my RM 125. Love this video. You are a gifted announcer and should be calling AMA Supercross.
A fantastic video Max, what a bargain for a grand , Sean rode like a hero, it's true twenty year old bike , suspension and braking improvement usually year on year , but rider skill a big part of it , thanks again for quality videos Max.
Save the bike. Not because it deserves it but because with a suspension overhaul and gearbox build it could make someone a very nice first mx bike. Maybe raffle it off or something?
My first ever bike was a 04 KXF 250, that I paid £1000 for, and my first race on that was also at toddington. What a coincidence! Great video as always max.
True story but this bike was the exact same bike my father had all those years ago with the exact same exhaust truly one of the kind golden gems of Motocross bikes 😍😍👍 remember it like it was yesterday good times
Great ride Sean!!! Rescue the Piglet!!! Rebuild it and get all the parts companies on board to donate the parts needed and make videos about all the work to restore the bike. Once it's completed raffle it off for 10 pounds a ticket. I think it would make great content.
When I was racing, I rode a 3 year old Husqvarna, just because it never broke. And it was cheap. Still, I managed a number 6 pro overall at the end of the year, on a bike that was outdated, heavy and slow. Not to mention it's rider. Another great video, Max!
It would be a whole different game if we saw an actual 1000 dollar bike being portrayed here. That bike as it sits is still 1900-2500 around here. 1000 gets you a ticket to the early to mid 90s, and clapped out at that.
As always a fantastic video. And bravo for wearing a Moto boot when starting it up for the first time. Those old 4 strokes can be leg breakers before you even put them into gear with the built up compression.
@999Lazer Absolutely 👍🏁🤠 We have a 2004 Honda CRF250R that has sat in my shop for 15 years without being crunk since the owner broke his neck on it. We had to weld the bracket that holds the muffler on and put a ole rim on it that got cracked also in the crash, cleaned the carb and put new tires and air filter in it and raced it. It had no problem beating the new bikes!
Fair play to Sean for the sellar effort, exllent upload as always guys .I recon its time max threw a leg over one of the 500s in the fleet and do a race 👍💪💪
My best friend Chris in high school rode this exact bike. He raced 250 expert and i raced 450 expert on the '04 yz 450. The things he did on that motorcycle were absolutely unbelievable. I saw him drag handlebar scrubbing the big hill at Steadmx. And do it every lap hitting the same exact marks. So i forget what video it is. In it Josh Grant when he was still on the yz250f bails coming up short on a big landing to landing double in the freestyle pit of my local track outside of Reno, Nevada. He just slid down the landing on his ass. We were there that day. My buddy Chris, with an engine WE built in his garage did a no footed can over it first try. Just greased it in Josh Grants face. I swear to god this is a true story im not bullshitting any of you. It brought back so many memories when i heard it fire up in the garage. We left the stock muffler can and tip on it just had an fmf core and packing. So the guys in the pits wouldn't think twice to report your illegal ass engine if they see stock exhaust.
The " piglit " I love it !!!! I still have a 98 YZ400 that I yank out when feeling piggy ! I love racing it with the newer bikes - and to top it off we have a mini pig that lives in the house with us and his name is Big Al !!!!! He hangs out with our dogs etc very smart boy !!! What a great video I love the under dog ( pig ) lol tests !!! 999 you boys have out done yourselfs this time and we love it !!!! At 40 years old I bought the same bike a yzf250 as my first bike ... spent more on safety gear than I did my bike lol. But I can't wait to get good enough to race. I love it. Now having seen this I doubt it would take a lot of improvement as to where the bike is more of a limiting factor than I am.
This was great fun. I rode an 04 yz250f for a couple years it was a great bike. I'd like to see if with some maintenance and very modest upgrades can a 20 year old yz250F be competitive with a modern 4 stroke.
In 2000ad I raced my 1983 cr250 on the Yamaha test track, and kicked the butts of the local team riders! I let a few of them ride it, they couldn't understand how I was so fast on the thing....lol! Nice try Sean! Great video Max!

I had that exact year before going to an 07yz250f those 04 bikes was ahead of there time really they were bulletproof while all other 4strokes had countless issues
@999Lazer you're missing something here; the part of the air filter that was covered by the wash cover is still clean. So if you put the wash cover to one side and sit down with a 4 pint milk bottle and some scissors you could make a similar cover for the rest of the filter element, then you could race the bike at at the weekend without having to do any air filter maintenance. Thank me later
I'm an old guy now(34) and some of my best racing years were on my '05 yz250f! The year right before Yamaha switched to aluminum frame haha. Damn, makes me sound old ha!
Mon the piglet! Put a cheap 2 stroke engine possibly a dt125 engine in it or keep it at a track as a statue to keep watch over the racers 😂 or see if the gearbox can be put right
The 07 had aluminum frame, titanium shock spring and foot pegs I think. They were the most durable 250f, but still valves would get tight, particularly intakes, but they lasted decently.
Decades ago I raced for fun on very second hand bikes purchased for a fraction of their new price . I did ok and had lots of fun. The best bike needs a decent rider to be ok. yet a good rider on an old reliable bike can get a result. He may have gotten a better result on a 90s 2 stroke 250.
You can't tell by just looking when he's riding what year the bike is! The bike would work great for an amature rider to see if they want to take the racing game seriously!
To be fair, I race a bike quite regularly that I only have about $1000 into. That being said, it's a vintage bike that I got for free. I've upgraded the dual shock suspension with a $700 pair of shocks, as well as some $150 and I added a $125 carburetor. Do another one of these videos on a 1996 yz125. They were absolute screamers. Not sure how much they go for where you are but in Australia you would find one running for 1,000 pounds
Don't need to watch this to know the answer is YES. I started racing on a 1975 YZ80C. And that was in 1980 when the Honda CR80 first came out. My Yamaha had 4.5HP from factory. So my POS probably was putting out 3-3.5HP at the time. The CR80s bone stock put out 16.5HP!! I'd get about halfway down the start straight by the time most of the pack was entirely out of my view. But I never came in last place. Then I got a 1974? Yamaha MX100. Couldn't race that though. They didn't have a class for 100cc around me. Then I jumped to a 1982 YZ250. That bike forced me to learn how to work WITH the bike, since it was such a heavy monster. Point is: You learn to adapt with what you have. No excuses. I guarantee I could take an old POS and win on it, still today. As long as the suspension is semi-functional and it runs ok and the brakes work.
Rebuild that MFer. Have the suspension, tranny and motor gone through and make him race it again. I can't believe you didn't think of this by the end of the video. Don't give up on it. You could literally make an entire video series off of this bike Max

Been looking at buying a older drz400 sticking a slick tyre on the back an, use it as a feild drift bike or a derby sender 125 there heaps of shit but ride very well of road
Looked yesterday on my local Craigslist for a cheap 125 2 Stroke.. cheapest bike I found was a 1991 YZ125, they wanted $1800 USD! 😮 I'd give $1200 USD for that Piglet any day!! Nice score!
Also was wondering about the suspension. Surley you did that sag but the oil in those forks probably black, and valves a bit worn out probably. But excellent value for money to get into riding
Obviously Sean is a very good rider. I’d like to see a complete novice competing. I predict that any modern motocross bike would be too quick for them.
I dont think that would be safe. I am pretty sure they would do three laps for every lap i would do. And i do have a little bit of experience on sand/mut but have never done anything that resembles MX.
I have an 05 250f I picked up for exactly 1200 bucks. All I had to do was reshim the valves and change the oil, and she runs like a top. It’s currently in pieces with a bunch of stuff powdered while parts are in the mail, nothing it needed but things I wanted to
Only goes to show that motorcycle racing is 90% rider, 10% bike.
I guess.. i mean the bike needs to be decent enuf to finish a race.. id say more like 60/40 or 75/25. Lol
I agree 100%, only ss long as the bike can survive the day though! lol Thanks for watching Mike :-D
always was this way and always will be, i keep telling people
Hell yea! I race a 2004 300 exc. Still rips!

He really did din't he! He just wanted it gone and out the way, so we happily took it off his hands lol Thanks for watching dude
This feels brand new to me xD i rode a 1998 KX 250
an old stock dirtbike that runs well is just as good as a new bike if they run they run. idrk what they expected to happen 😂
It’s currently in pieces with a bunch of stuff powdered while parts are in the mail, nothing it needed but things I wanted to
you can race whatever the hell you can start!!!!!
SAVE THE PIGLET 😂😂
great video, thanks
Thanks for watching Matheson :-D
