What I really like is the re-contextualizing of his actions now that this reveal happened. One that is funny is when Estelle calls herself and Kloe the red and blue knights and Olivier calls himself the lone, wandering prince of a nearby country and Estelle thinks he is joking, but he is actually blurting out his true identity because he knows that no one would believe him. Another thing that gets re-contextualized is that he assisted in rescuing Kloe despite the fact Richard would have him marry her which would give him power over Liberl. This shows that he cares more about Kloe's freedom towards her life over any benefits he would gain from taking it away.
Yeah also Richard is kinda nasty because Kloe is what? 16 or 17 maybe 18 and Oliviert is like what over 30 during the Sky arc, soooo yeah... To be fair in Erebonian 16 is the age where they can get married but still weird age difference wise.
@@Erpy80 Ohh ok I remember seeing in wiki that he is over 30 but maybe that's in later arcs. Still 25 and Kloe is I think 17 right? Is not as bad as I thought but still... Schera is clearly more his age group, he should be targeting. To be fair he did flirt with Joshua in OG first Sky FC where Joshua was 16 sooo... But then again 16 is the legal age in Erebonia, they call it "entering into the high society".
Yea, this is the best scene in the game for me. Absolute showstopper, and also just fully puts Olivier’s character into context. He’s someone who loves his country deeply, but mourns how it is so deeply entrenched in war instead of love. He knows about underground plans to invade Liberl, and wants to meet Cassius to warn him. All the while, he sees the joy and peace people have in Liberl and learns to love it, and brings that energy back with him. Olivier is someone who so clearly has been hiding his true intent, and this reveals it is because he needed to fool both the Liberlians AND the Erebonians and recontextualizes everything about his character. This reveal also works wonders for Estelle’s character, as it neatly wraps up the character arc she had about pressing people she is suspicious of but not forcing them. It beautifully follows up on the airship convo from chapter 2, and just is honestly so insanely fun and surprising. An all time plot twist for me.
My favorite part of this reveal is that Olivier and Kloe's character arcs are actually incredibly similar: Members of royalty who want nothing more than to be "normal", yet forced into roles of responsibility by the circumstances. We see Kloe's struggle throughout FC and SC to live up to her role, and how Estelle's journey gave her strength to do so; but Olivier has gone through the exact same process, learning from his companions to carve his own path. It's an amazing parallel: one in the light, the other in the dark.
The thing I love the most of about Olivier is that he has never truly put on a facade. The whole wacky goofball angle has never been an act which is what made it the greatest possible camouflage.
Yeah. Everyone is always all, "Oh! Olivier finally has revealed his true self! Prince Olivert!" Nah, Olivier is his true self. Olivert is the fake face society forces him to wear!
It takes some SERIOUS brass balls and confidence in your writing skills to effectively use the same twist TWICE. And in the SEQUEL no less! Honestly, the only way that moment could have been any better would be if Nico hadn’t recognized him again.
Lots of stuff about Olivier/Olivert already said, so no need to repeat that. (although one thing I do want to repeat is the fact Olivert is a bastard and as such, not a crown prince) What I do want to point out is Sky's use of dialogue portraits here. It's a trick they've used several times in both games to use the angle of the dialogue portraits to convey those characters' personalities. There are two styles of portraits; characters who look straight at the camera and characters whose angle is more off to the side. Almost without exception, the characters who look straight into the camera are straight-forward, direct and up-front. Examples are Agate, Cassius, Mueller, Don Capua, Duke Dunan, Jill, Matron Theresa, Julia Schwarz and most of all, Estelle. Most other characters use the angled look. Every once in a while, Falcom uses this distinction to great effect to first portray a character using the off-to-the-side look while they're pretending to be something they're not and then switch to a straight-at-the-camera version when they drop the act and embrace their true self. We saw this early on during FC's prologue when Josette was using the angled look while in her student disguise only to switch to straight-at-the-camera-mode after she dropped the uniform and put on her sky bandit duds. It was done VERY effectively in the epilogue of FC where Alba suddenly did a 45 degrees turn after his true personality as Weissmann came out. And they did it briefly with Joshua after he drugged Estelle and he was, for the first time, looking us straight in the eyes and no longer trying to hide who he was, which was also when he confessed his love for Estelle. They did it in this game too, briefly with Renne (her closeup after she pulled that murderscythe out was looking straight at the player) and now they did it with Kloe (with the closeup) and Olivert. (both closeup and his dialogue portrait for the rest of the scene) It's a fantastic effect to tell players, this is the character as they really are. And since this effect isn't used in the Crossbell games (different art style), the Evo versions of the Sky games (all portraits needed to have the exact same angle in order to assist lip-syncing) or the 3D games (which will include the Sky remakes), I'll be gushing over it now.
Awesome comment. Though, the Crossbell portraits isn’t an art style thing. It’s just a result of the portraits all using the same stock pose for everyone. Which is reused for Sky evo
Awesome comment. Though, the Crossbell portraits isn’t an art style thing. It’s just a result of the portraits all using the same stock pose for everyone. Which is reused for Sky evo
Sky 1 Richard: "We have to arm Liberl at any cost, Erebonia will have its tanks at our border any day now, and we are unprepared." Bracers:"Oh Richard don't be silly, diplomacy works, no one tries to invade Queen Alicia... twice." Sky SC. **The Gang Finds Erebonian Tanks At Their Border**
Honestly that's what makes RIchard such a compelling vilain for me. His methods were absolutely too extreme, but his motive was... completely reasonable and justified
I'd like to highlight something else about the negotiation scene. It shows another reason why Estelle is a brilliant protagonist - her ability to keep things relatable and grounded. The story has turned into a 4D chess game with multiple players all competing against each other at once, but Estelle is always Estelle - she has very little patience for any of this "plans within plans within plans" nonsense, and she keeps undercutting the drama with her bluntness and sarcasm and forcing the focus back onto relatable emotional stakes. Without Estelle around to voice the audience's thoughts, the story could get so dramatic and complex that it became totally unrecognisable. She's the story's secret sauce.
Ouroboros, secret society of uber-badass villains with apparently infinite money: "At last, our plan has come to fruition. Liberl has lost all of its advanced technology and our plan - which was so fiendishly complex that using mind control to help organise a coup of Liberl's government was just _step one_ - nears completion!" Chancellor Osborne, bold reformer of a fearsome military powerhouse of an empire: "Hehehe, I planned ahead for just such an eventuality by heavily investing in obsolete weaponry just in case all advanced technology in my resource-rich neighbour were to suddenly stop working. At last, my plans are paying off." Olivier, the deceptively brilliant secret prince of the Imperial family: "Ha! Not so fast! You see, _I_ planned ahead for this eventuality as well, and I-" Cassius Bright, living legend, military genius and generally so OP that the evil secret society of bad guys had to keep him _out of the country_ for their plans to work at all: "And I _also_ planned ahead for just such a-" Estelle, a simple country girl with a big stick and a bigger heart, who was completely done with all this shit at least three plot twists ago: "Yes, dad. We know. You know that he knew that you knew, blah blah blah, now can you all please _cut the shit so we can get back to saving the day?!?"_
It's what makes Estelle pretty much the perfect protagonist for the franchise's first story arc where every player (well, at least before the "you can start with the 4th/6th/8th/11th game"-factor started making its appearance) is completely new to the world of Zemuria and doesn't really know much less about the world than Estelle, who's lived her entire life in rural Rolent. She's a simple girl with a simple approach to life and she can ask the questions players might ask without breaking immersion. It's probably no coincidence that protagonists get savvier as the series goes on because the player gets savvier about the universe. Just like a character like Van, with his almost meme-like amount of knowledge and connections, would be jarring as protagonist of the Sky arc, a protagonist like Estelle would probably be jarring for the later arcs (even if she's still my favorite Trails protagonist) because the Trails veterans would constantly grunting "catch up with the plot" whenever terms like Anguis, Dominion, higher elements or archaisms would pop up and she'd react with a simple "buh?".
@@Erpy80 True, and I hadn't fully appreciated that - though I do think Estelle's approach to the story is sorely missing in the later games. Lloyd and Rean may be more clued up about the setting but they're also more earnest - they don't have Estelle's habit of undercutting the drama with snark when things threaten to get a bit too much, and I think as a result, their stories _are_ sometimes a bit too much. I do like them both, and I certainly don't think their games are bad - the series has kept up a high standard of quality - but their more straight-laced approach to the story just isn't the same.
Now, for the biggest twist in the whole Trails series, Dunan can actually experience character development, oh, and Olivier is actually one of the most important figures in Zemuria, that too. In all seriousness Olivier is actually shown to be a very sharp tactician and negotiator (Specifically he's very good at conflict resolution specifically which he really shows off in SC's Ruan arc) indicating that he has a lot of life experience and schooling, but he always manages to avoid suspicion by having the appearance of wearing his heart on his sleeve and being a bumbling drunkard. Also how crazy is it that Blueblanc managed to have a rivalry with the royal children of both Liberal and Erabonia? My man really said screw the Monarchy!
And the question about why Olivier was looking for Cassius in the first game has finally been answered. Trails may have the slowest burns but its payoffs are cooked to perfection.
Alternate timeline where Estelle didn't complete a single sidequest: Smug Estelle: "Aww, yeah! I'm a legit E rank bracer, baby!" Olivier: **facepalming**
I think that's not possible because even if you do only mainline quests you would still be of a higher rank because main quests still give BP. However the idea of Estelle acting so high and mighty with a E rank does sound hilarious to say at least 🤣.
Let it be known that Olivier gave away the entire plot like 20 episodes or so ago when talking about the play Estelle and Joshua did, suggesting he join the story as a prince from another land
For those of you wondering, yes, Estelle technically assaulted a member of Erebonian royalty, and unknowingly caused who knows how many international incidents.
I'd like to point out that since it was made explicitly clear that Joshua figured out Olivier's identity when he fought with Mueller that he knew he was the crown prince and likely figured out that he would involve himself after he left the party...and decided to say absolutely nothing about this to Estelle and the rest of the party.
What makes this detail even GREATER is that it's not even revealed how Joshua figured it out. Why would Mueller being with Olivier mean anything? Is it even revealed in this game what the Vander line is? I actually forget. Maybe Joshua reveals it when he talks about how he figured out who Olivert was. Either way, It's just another brick in the wall that shows this world Falcom created is a complete living breathing world.
Olivier's identity is a plot twist that the player not only doesn’t see coming but also contains enough clues for the player to piece it together. First of all, Olivier was one of the few who knew what happened in Hamel. As we have seen so far, the only ones who know the truth about Hamel are the survivors of Hamel, the high-ranking officers in the army, such as Morgan and Zechs, and the heads of the government, like Alicia. Olivier is clearly not one of the survivors, and while not impossible, he doesn’t seem to be a military general or anything of the sort. Even so, being a member of the Intelligence Division, as Schera suggests, remain entirely valid. However, the key to everything lies with Mueller. Why is such a powerful swordsman always watching over him as if he were his babysitter or bodyguard? Also, some of Mueller's conversations don’t quite add up if Olivier were a member of the Intelligence Division. For example, when Mueller realizes Olivier was right about Joshua’s origins, he says: 'I guess even that idiot’s guesses can be right sometimes.' If Olivier was part of Intelligence, Mueller would likely think more highly of such 'guesses.' Combine all this with Olivier's manner of dress, his way of speaking, his eccentric tastes, his lack of a backstory and his deep knowledge of erebonian history, politcs and culture, and the player can start piecing together Olivier’s identity. But that’s not even the best part yet. At the end of Chapter 1, Estelle, Kloe, and Olivier talk about Joshua and the play from FC, to which Olivier comments: 'Ah, then this would make me the lone, wandering prince from a nearby country, here to take back the dark-haired princess, even if by force...'. For those interested, you can see this line in Chapter 7 of this series at 1:06:45. "And just to make it clear, no, people don’t recognize him. Similar to Kloe, he prefers to keep his identity as private as possible. That’s why even at the Erebonian embassy, he doesn’t receive any kind of respect." Speaking of Kloe, I’ve always thought it’s a shame that the peak of her character development is SO overshadowed by Olivier’s revelation. Kloe is a character who, despite her noble origins, enjoys living her life as a commoner. She loves going to school, making friends, and spending time with Theresa and the children at the orphanage. Many might assume Kloe hesitates to inherit the throne solely because of the responsibilities it entails or her insecurities. However, many overlook that for Kloe, becoming queen also means leaving behind the lifestyle she cherishes. Even so, Kloe chooses to inherit the throne, not out of a sense of duty or justice, but because she sees an opportunity, the chance to gain the power necessary to help and protect everyone she loves. And the game doesn’t settle for just telling us that Kloe is ready; it also shows us that she’s ready. During the main conflict, she demonstrated empathy for those affected in Erebonia, de-escalated tensions between both sides, defended her people’s innocence, and negotiated an agreement between both parties. For Kloe, becoming the heir to the throne and defending her people form Erebonia is an act that embodies her love, growth, and determination.
I can't believe these guys wrote a chapter climax where the end boss from the last game showing up as your ally is only like the 3rd most badass plot twist to happen. Seriously, the end of this chapter is just banger after banger of narrative resolutions, all beautifully cascading over each other in a work of art. It's just a good dang game writing, man.
Liberl News Breaking Story: PRETTY PANSEXUAL PRINCE PARLEYS PEACE WITH PUREHEARTED PRINCESS! Sources Close to the Princess had this to say:"SSCCRREEEEEEEEEEEE!!!"
To me, one of the greatest moments in trails is the moment where Richard realizes what a fool he's been. He realizes that the young people of his nation are ready to step up and fight for the nation's future. He realizes that he should not have trusted to ancient mechanisms he could not control, but should have put his faith in the allies he had around him the entire time. Cassius' rebuke at the end of the last game hits him like a truck. He will spend a long time yet going on about the "don't call me colonel" thing, and everyone will ignore him and keep calling him colonel. It is a symbol of who Richard is, everyone else has forgiven him, everyone else thinks he should be "Colonel Richard" again, everyone else has put water under the bridge. The only person who can't forgive Colonel Alan Richard is Colonel Alan Richard himself.
@@madaranotsoanonymousnowuch1539 How so? My thought was written with how what we see here is, if anything, a foreshadowing of everything that happens in Sky the 3rd. Sky the 3rd is where this subtext becomes text.
From episode 7: Estelle: Now let’s combine our forces and find our lost princess! (In reference to Joshua) Kloe: Lead on, red knight! Olivier: Ah, then this would make me the lone, wandering prince from a nearby country, here to take back the dark-haired princess, even if by force… This made me spit out my drink when I heard it in your playthrough since it went right over my head in mine
Im having the exact same experience, I only played each game once for the foreshadowing in this game hit me like a truck. Even this episode when they straight up named a certain important character in the cold steel games.
A blonde-haired prince who has passionate ideals, desires peace for his citizens above everything, and has a charming exterior that hides a much more serious side. Later on in the story, it looks like he's just using those around him for his own ends, yet it's eventually revealed that he's still the same man with a heart of gold, as advocated by the player character. At the very least, Olivier doesn't seem to be haunted by phantoms of the dead, so that's a plus!
I think it’s a real testament to the strength of Trails’ character writing that you can take someone as vile as Duke Dunan and somehow transform him into an upstanding guy, perhaps even a *cool guy*, with just a few rounds of NPC dialogue and a showdown against Ouroboros. You would never think it’s possible coming out of FC, or honestly even after SC chapter 3, and yet here we are!
Having played all the Trails games currently released in the West, this episode contains my favorite line from the series so far, and it's a small line that most people probably don't think much of. After Olivier's princely reveal outside Haken Gate, Zechs asks him why he's so dead set on making an enemy of Chancellor Osborne. Olivier responds: "Because the way he acts is not beautiful." For some reason that line always resonated with me, and whenever I think about my favorite lines it is always the first to come to mind. Due to the preceding scene, the player is still questioning Olivier's motives and loyalties, but that one line reassured me that he is still being true to himself; he is still our "Olivier" and not just "Prince Olivert." It's a line that equally makes you shake your head thinking "this silly bard," but also a line that touches on his determination to follow through on his convictions despite what others may think of him.
Another very minor detail I saw pointed out once, Kloe and Olivier are the only members of the party with purple eyes, and purple is a color usually used to represent royalty. Not really a connection you can make until you know Kloe's identity at least, but an interesting detail nonetheless.
This whole string of events is awesome and really gets you hyped for the endgame. You have the Enforcers attacking the capital with Ouroboros, Cid and Richard saving the day, Amalthea and the Intelligence Division trying to redeem themselves, and everything with Olivier as you wonder how it's going to end...before realizing Estelle hit an Erebonian Prince with her stick so hard that he literally flew through a restaurant's door and got knocked out.
Fun fact: Estelle and Olivert’s dialogue during the Olivert cutscene changes depending on your bracer rank! So yes, that does mean if your rank is super low, Olivert WILL roast you for it lmao Here is all of his dialogue for each rank if you were curious! A-rank (what you got): Ah, pardon me. From what I understand, A-rank bracers are among the most capable bracers alive. You will forgive me, but I find it a little difficult to believe that a young girl such as yourself could hold that rank. B-rank: Ah, I see, you're a bracer. Mmm, B-rank... That would make you a veteran bracer who could be trusted with an arbitration of this scope, but... C-rank: Ah, I see, you're a bracer. C-rank means you are a bracer of some standing. Very well. So what do you intend to do about our little situation, 'neutral arbitrator'? D-rank: Ah, I see, you're a bracer. Hmm... Unless I am mistaken, the guild possesses seven ranks, G to A, does it not? How much trust can a mid-rank Liberlian bracer really be given here, I wonder? (Yes, he really calls her MID lmaoo) E-rank: Ah, I see, you're a bracer. Hmm... Unless I am mistaken, the guild possesses seven ranks, G to A, does it not? How does someone who cannot even claim middle rank in the guild intend to 'arbitrate' this situation? I suppose I can respect courage, if nothing else. You may speak. So what do you intend to do about our little situation, 'neutral arbitrator' (E is the lowest you can get from completing the critical story path) Also shout out to Philip and his last stand against EVERY Enforcer at once, what an absolute Chad!
My favorite part personally is Kloe's response to Estelle declaring her ranking. Higher rank: Estelle...! Mid-rank: Estelle... Low-rank: Uh, Estelle... Her increasing disappointment slays me.
At this point in my playthrough I was convinced that Olivier was a spy working for Erebonia to invade Liberl again for some reason. I really wish I had a picture of my face when this reveal went down and I learned that I was both completely right AND completely wrong. It was priceless; one of the best reveals in the game.
I beat Trails twice and even so this is the first time I saw this Duke scene. The amount of extra dialoge you're rewarded with for simply exploring is beyond anything other series offers.
Compared to Kloe, the truth about Olivier was far more subtle, but still not entirely beyond expectations. As both of them had very personally close connections to important individuals within their country, and had enough influence to direct those important individuals to fit their needs. The only difference was that we never got to see Olivier show that much of his pull on people from his country, with only the fact that officers and diplomats from his country staying their hand from his antics being a point to quest, as everyone puts up a fuss about Olivier's actions, but never try anything against him, at most verbalizing their frustrations.
One particular scene you might enjoy recontextualizing: Remember after the martial arts tournament in FC, when Olivier was going to go with the others to the banquet at the castle--which would have him in close proximity to Richard, who was trying to marry Klaudia off to him (and who, as the head of the Intelligence Division, would _definitely_ recognize Prince Olivert on sight)? Only for Mueller to show up out of nowhere and drag him off? How much of that do you think was staged?
Not exactly on sight because Richard and Olivier shared a scene twice during the Bose chapter (once when Richard first introduced himself while the party was investigating the burglaries after being released from jail and once after the Capua hideout raid after the siblings were taken away by the royal army) and he was also watching the final match of the martial arts competition. But it's certainly very likely he'd be suspicious after talking with Olivier for a while. It's quite in-character for Olivier to simply not give a damn and simply want to attend that banquet for the cuisine. It's also in-character for Mueller to give very much of a damn and drag Olivier away because there are not going to be any international incidents on his watch, damnit.
Estelle: Hell ya! I an A-Rank Bracer now. Agate: Hold on a second! Schera: Why aren’t we A Ranked Bracers then? We were in her party while Estelle was doing requests! Agate: Ya I even dealt the final blow stopping a rampaging dragon! Elnan: My apologize, only the designated Party Leader gets the credit. Schera: Thats BS! Agate: Dammit! I shouldnt have gotten lazy let Estelle do all the management!
@@Doctorrr_ A rank is the highest you can get normally. To become S rank you need to stop a national level crisis. Granted what was happening in FC and right now IS most definitely a national crisis, so I wonder how after everything is over they distribute the achievements for everyone.
@@jackjohnson8305 well, I meant like the bracers who are in Estelle's party who were already A rank before the game started. But you're right, Estelle's really only B rank (A rank if you somehow managed to do every side quest perfectly)
Yes your bracer rank affects the dialogue with Olivier. Fun fact, there is a scene in FC that is affected by your Bracer Rank too. Its during the final fight where Cassius shows up to save Richard. If your rank was the lowest possible, you get the coolest variation where Cassius beats the final boss for you.
I enjoy watching the moment when someone realizes for the first time what Olivert is, but "I have to recontextualize everything" may be the single best reaction yet!
Now that you are entering the REAL final chapter, there are a few things I want to tell you. First off, the Zemurian Ore that you got this episode can be used quite early in the final chapter, but you DO NOT want to use it immediately. If you hold on to the Zemurian Ore for a little bit into the chapter, you will eventually get something really good. Likewise, there are a few party members who you still have not seen their final S-Crafts yet. To get these remaining final S-Crafts, I recommend you see Estelle's (which I don't remember if you have used yet; it is specialized against bosses) and that you make sure that both Schera and Olivier get caught up to the team especially since Olivier is your magic nuke. Finally, remember those Data Crystals that you put into the Capel during Chapter 7. They will gradually get decoded throughout the final chapter, so check them often.
Gotta love when Armand, Ellie, Kitty, Bloom, and Rinon's long NPC arcs come together like that. The best part is, using JRPG logic you'd probably expect Estelle will be catching the flowers, which makes it pretty hilarious when it goes sailing over the wall. And then the punchline is that much better if you've kept up with Kitty et al.'s stories. But yeah, now you know why I was adamant you keep up with Armand & Ellie in the last game, in addition to Anton & Ricky.
Olivert really pulled the wool over Nico's eyes. He took off one letter from his name and it completely flew under the radar for Nico. Although given how the Kloe-Klaudia reveal also got Nico completely by surprise maybe royalty in the Trail series just is an eternal Blind spot for him.
He changed the spelling and pronunciation of his name, not just a simple removal of a letter Olivier (pronounced Oh-liv-ee-ay) Olivert (pronounced Ah-Liv-ert)
As a Trails fan, I'll pull a Akihiko for a moment. I'VE BEEN WAITING FOR THIS. Definetely one of the memorable twists in this series, and it has a lot of those.
Fun fact: Olivier will make fun of the player who are this lazy to do side quest. It not Estelle fault for having the lowest rank. It the player fault for speed running the game. Olivier: Ah yes, I WAS THE SPY THE WHOLE TIME!!!
Nico: Wow, Kloe was actually a princess this whole time?! I never saw it coming! Olivier: I have an idea. Mueller: No, don’t do one of your extravagant plans again. Olivier: Estelle and Nico will never see my grand reveal coming! Please….. Mueller: Fine…
Prince Olivert Reise Arnor, ladies and gentlemen. One of my all-time favorite fictional characters, ever. His defining quality is that he never, ever mopes. He never feels sorry for himself. He never wonders if any of it is worth it. He has one setting alone: forward, relentlessly, never looking back. He will always do the very best he can with what he knows and where he is. He is going to get hit with failure and loss time and time again, but he will never stop and wallow in that failure, that failure will never define him. He will always be a patriot. Always be an optimist. Always look for the best in others. That's why he's so universally beloved, both in-universe and in real life.
@@Erpy80 Prince Olivert is Zemurian Linkedln, and with that artifact he has, he is a human social network onto himself. It's plain to see why his father, Emperor Eugent III, once remarked that "it is obvious why he has friends in every corner of the continent." Trails universe Nightwing is a very apt comparison, how many people can you name who, when they were in grade school, got help on their homework from Superman?
No Nico, nooo. It's O-l-i-v-e-r-t, Olivert the Prince of Erebonia. Olivier is your little pervy bard friend. They are completely, entirely two different people...yes
I'm glad you started following the Rinon, Kitty stories organically without a ton of people directing you to them specifically, (as far as i could see maybe i missed it) so that you could really appreciate the payoff with the bouquet. Not every NPC storyline gets that satisfying a conclusion but a surprising number of them do or at least come close.
Nico yesterday: sorry penguins, no Trails video tonight. I'm feeling burn out. Nico after this video: sorry guys, no Metaphor video. Too much plot exposition from Trails
@@EasilyBoredGamer You have more endurance then me, my friend. After I played Azure, CS 3 and CS 4 back-to-back-to-back, I needed a six month break before I could start on Reverie.
Congrats on getting rank A, Nico! This is the moment where I inform you that canonically Estelle is rank B, meaning that Falcom was most likely aware of how bull BP requirements can be in this game and that's how it gets acknowledged, this is very funny for me. All of this effort for nothing.
Her canon B rank is mentioned much later in the series. I'd guess based on the events/resolutions that occur between this scene and the time she's mentioned as being B rank, that she is probably "D+" and on the cusp of C here. Definitely not higher than C though.
They finally introduced the prince of the neighboring kingdom, Prince Olivert. Man what a late game introduction to a character that we only had small hints about and now all of a sudden shows up and have never seen before, truly the Trails series is a slow burn kind of game indeed.
I'm following this series along for the first time with Nico, and I feel pretty proud having seen Olivier for the first time in FC and going, "This guy's a secret prince or something, isn't he?" 😂😂
Osborne has actually been mentioned a few times before this, but this is the first time that it's clear that this man is someone important. We've heard talk of a chancellor before, but never any real details until now.
Specifically, he was mentionned by name in Chapter 3 at the embassy. But we was also alluded back in FC by Olivier who called him "the Chancellor" when he talked to Mueller via his artifact.
I think something that really shows the level of intelligence that Olivier took into hiding his identity is that NONE of Ouroboros had made comment. This includes Bleublanc, who very clearly does not care for aliases, as shown with Kloe. Bleublanc has called him bard the entire time, claiming Olivier to be an oddity and rival in pursuit of beauty. However, if we really think about it, Olivier could be in contention for his heart as well
Bleublanc knew Oliviers identity. Remember in FC that Bleublanc was introduced as an infamous Erebonian Thief who was still at large. Bleublanc revealing who Olivier was during their first meeting in SC would've run the risk of exposing his identity. At least I'd like to think so.
My favorite recontextualization from Olivier's revelation is when Mueller bans him from joining the dinner party in FC. I first thought, why would anyone make a big deal if some Erebonian made a fool of himself there. Here we realize he is the prince of Erebonia. It would not look good on Erebonia if their prince was the one who did it. Erebonia was shown to have been really proud of two things their Military and more importantly their Nobility. If their prince who was the highest nobility in the Empire has made a fool out of himself in a foreign party. It would be such a scandal and the Empire would be a real laughingstock.
Best part about Olivier being a prince is the fact that he's still a wacky little shit. That's just his personality. And this game asks what would it be like if the prince of a hardcore steampunk warmongering nation was a silly, zany, bisexual lover of beauty and love.
Usually, I leave long detailed comments, but now all I'm gonna comment on is that the pauses that Nico had during the Olivert reveal was felt my soul 🤣
It is no coincidence that the same time Kloe makes her Royal debut, Olivier makes his. Peak cinema. And Kloe isn’t wearing the wig anymore, because she’s no longer faking it. This scene is just so much pay off for the two of them. It shines a new light on everything Olivier has said and done. Like why Mueller didn’t let him attend the tournament dinner: Richard would have recognized him instantly. And it casts a new light on the conversation with Estelle in the ship before chapter 4. He knew he was being sneaky and in a bad light. But Estelle chose to trust him. And so, I believe this proclamation of loyalty to Estelle was one of his most sincere, earnest lines. But man, this also does a helluva job selling off the chancellor as a villain. On top of the sheer balls to bring in steam tanks, he has created multiple narratives to justify this little bit of invasion/attempted imperialism. “What choice would we have then to become the defenders of the free world?” Absolutely terrifying, wonderful writing. This is just an awesome scene with awesome pay off. And awesome action.
Nico: man, this plot is going at a snails pace, good thing the characters and world-building are amazing because it is SLOOOOWWWW... Ouroboros and Olivier: Oh, do you now ? welp, you heard him boys, let's get to work. Nico: Wait, WAIT! Too fast! THIS IS GOING TOO FAST!! STOP! AHHHHHHH!!!!!
Fun story: some of my friends and I were watching another of our friends play through SC for the first time. When he got to this part, we totally gaslit him into thinking that Olivier and Olivert are different people. I’m pretty sure he’s not entirely certain they’re the same to this day
HELL YES. WE GOT TO THE PART! When I first played this game and saw the anime opening where Olivier is in his Erebonian outfit, my dumb ass thought it was ELNAN and kept waiting for the reveal that the guild receptionist was a prince 😭 Seeing Olivier with his angier expressions is SUCH A TRIP LIKE HOLY HELL. I even started second guessing myself at certain points like, I thought he was going to immediately ally himself on our situation but then I was like, *"do* I really know what he's doing?? Why tf is he acting like he doesn't know some of this stuff???" His act was soooo good. He also had me VERY worried there for a hot second.
Technology in the Trails series at this point in the timeline is kinda weird sometimes because the very idea of a cell phone is witchcraft to half of the world but actual fucking magic and airships are daily things
Two of the best characters in this game are great magic users who both use fake identities and are actually royalty. Maybe monarchies aren´t so bad after all. And now you see why poor Mueller has to deal with Olivier being stupid, he can´t really leave the prince unprotected. The Olivier/Olivert twist is so good! I think most people choose to keep calling him Olivier, simply because that´s the name we are familiar with after almost 2 games.
In-universe, a lot of people who were familiar with his bard-identity keep calling him Olivier in later games, despite his real identity now being out there.
It was a close call having to quickly convert it from orbal to bicycle-powered but, finally, the giant oversized fan Bloom had setup on the adjacent roof beforehand has finally paid off.
I can just imagine when the bouquet was thrown the grandma had some wind device to push the bouqet towards kitty and when kitty caught the bouquet you see grandma looking out the window with an evil smile on her face.
DO YOU REMEMBER WHEN HE JOKINGLY TOLD YOU HE WAS A LONE WANDERING PRINCE ? WELL GUESS WHAT ! Seriously tho, this scene and reveal are incredible. For me it cemented Olivier as the best character of the whole franchise.
In regards to your thoughts on the novels, yeah I agree this story isn't bad but not quite as good as Carnelia. It's just a difference in writing quality really, not that that's entirely a bad thing. Carnelia for better or worse reads alot more like your traditional novella than Gambler Jack does and I imagine they were afraid people didn't read it because of the length. It may also be the case that back when FC and SC were supposed to be one game the original idea was just to have Carnelia but when the games split they suddenly needed another novel and just didn't have the time to flesh it out to the extent Carnelia got fleshed out to. Either way a story like Gambler Jack is a little bit more accessable and I think for some sold them on the idea of reading these books inside of games (at least from convos I've had with people) so I like the variety. You're right that pretty much every game has their own novels you'll read through, I'm glad you're going to take the time to because there are some that like Carnelia are remarkably well done and worth talking about :).
So you mean to tell me that all this time that if Estelle was trying to find different ways to kill/get rid of Olivier was going to lead to a huge royal murder scandal?
I've been waiting for the moment at 1:33:23 for soooo long and I 100% remember when I learned the truth behind this and my own reaction. This is Legend of Heroes: Trails in the Sky at its best and those long-term set up revelations which recontexualize major parts of whole prior games are what make this overarching series so wonderful
imagine the plot of the game but olivier accidentally dying in battle, how much of a clusterfuck that would be for the plot when the reveal happens lmao
That was a great chapter and some big reveals and twists were in it. ^^ It is so fascinating that Duke Dunan and Richard have redeem themself and they changed for the good. It is also cool that Lt. Colonel Cid came to rescue and Kloe made up her mind and decided to inherit of the throne as princess Klaudia someday. She looks so beautiful in her new outfit. ^_^ Also congratulation for being an A-rank bracer now and it was addressed later, too. ;-) The twist about Olivier being prince Olivert was so awesome (and quite obvious, too). He was so mysterious back then and I also suspected him to be a noble/prince from another country, too, so I am glad that it turned to be right and he really is the prince (and a good looking one, too). ^_^ So he used his other persona and visited the other country and made a picture of it for himself to see what is going on and what is right and wrong, therefore his mysterious actions and wordings in some situations (and his tactic "to deceive the foes, you have to deceive your friends"). I really like his actions and intentions and it is a well written outcome and solution, too. I am happy that there are all main casts (of the good guys) in this chapter end present and I am looking forward to the next final chapter. ;-)
???: I will handle this: *A familiar man walks forward* Olivert: Hey guys it's me Olivier! I didn't tell you, but I'm the crown prince of the Empire. Here's someone you have previously met. *Another familiar man walks next to him.* ???: Do you recognise me? Estelle: No way... ANTON?! Anton: Yep. In secret, I'm actually a guard for Prince Olivert! Everyone: WHAAAAAATTTT?!
I really like this scene. Best scene of the game in my opinion. I especially love how they presented Olivier here and introduced Osborne. There's always been foreshadowing of Olivier being the fool he shows himself as. Osborne is basically the Cassius of Erebonia, in that all his actions are Legendary and all of his plans Always succeed. Even if he fails, he gets something out of it. He really has a need to annex nearby nations. He planned to take over Liberl 10 years ago, but was pushed back so he prepared a counterattack all this time. He could prepare the Steam Tanks because had some insider information from Ouroboros and knew about the Orbal Shutdown Phenomenon. Olivier realized Osborne was planning something take over Liberl, so he had to make a move first to prevent Osborne’s actions. If Olivier never went back to Erebonia, Osborne would have easily conquered Liberl, because the suspicious flying city would be the perfect excuse to take it over, and no one would listen to a lowly bard without authority. No one could stop him. Olivier could only obstruct Osborne, because he temporarily went back home and decided to take leadership of the invasion of Liberl. Because his royal name gives him the highest authority.
A gameplay tip related to Zemuria ore: Don’t use the ore to get an ultimate weapon the first chance you get. There’s an opportunity to duplicate it later and get a second ultimate weapon.

Hahaha! I've been waiting for this reveal!
In this episode: Nico's brain experiences the equivalent of a psychic flashbang
I am blind on this game, but I'm still not surprised.
@@Echo2602 He literaly says that Kloe would marry him. He may not be the crown prince, but he still is a prince.
Yeah also Richard is kinda nasty because Kloe is what? 16 or 17 maybe 18 and Oliviert is like what over 30 during the Sky arc, soooo yeah... To be fair in Erebonian 16 is the age where they can get married but still weird age difference wise.
@@hectorandrade8729 Yeah my bad. That's why I deleted my comment
@@Official_RetroMania Olivier's 25 during the Sky arc. 2 years older than Schera, 1 year older than Agate and 5 years younger than Zin.
But then again 16 is the legal age in Erebonia, they call it "entering into the high society".
falcom: hey you remember how kloe was actually royalty? that was pretty cool right?
watch this
At least Nico realized who this mf is
Well having Mueller is too big of a hint
Best part? Everything he's learning and experiencing in Liberl will prove to be the key that saves his fatherland.
Consider the following:
How many times has Schera whipped an imperial prince of Erebonia.
And how many times did he scream "harder"
How many times she "drunk" said prince 😂
you know damn well he likes it
@@runedoomEvery time
and how many times Schera will whip an imperial prince of Erebonia eventually.
Indeed!
The thing I love the most of about Olivier is that he has never truly put on a facade. The whole wacky goofball angle has never been an act which is what made it the greatest possible camouflage.
The more you get to know him throughout the games, the more you can see that
Yeah. Everyone is always all, "Oh! Olivier finally has revealed his true self! Prince Olivert!"
Nah, Olivier is his true self.
(although one thing I do want to repeat is the fact Olivert is a bastard and as such, not a crown prince)
What I do want to point out is Sky's use of dialogue portraits here.
This is a great comment! I never realized Joshua, Renne and Kloe was deliberately done this way as well.
Awesome comment. Though, the Crossbell portraits isn’t an art style thing. It’s just a result of the portraits all using the same stock pose for everyone. Which is reused for Sky evo

Liberl has lost all of its advanced technology and our plan - which was so fiendishly complex that using mind control to help organise a coup of Liberl's government was just _step one_ - nears completion!"
Chancellor Osborne, bold reformer of a fearsome military powerhouse of an empire: "Hehehe, I planned ahead for just such an eventuality by heavily investing in obsolete weaponry just in case all advanced technology in my resource-rich neighbour were to suddenly stop working. At last, my plans are paying off."
Olivier, the deceptively brilliant secret prince of the Imperial family: "Ha! Not so fast! You see, _I_ planned ahead for this eventuality as well, and I-"
Cassius Bright, living legend, military genius and generally so OP that the evil secret society of bad guys had to keep him _out of the country_ for their plans to work at all: "And I _also_ planned ahead for just such a-"
Estelle, a simple country girl with a big stick and a bigger heart, who was completely done with all this shit at least three plot twists ago: "Yes, dad.
Alternate timeline where Estelle didn't complete a single sidequest:
Smug Estelle: "Aww, yeah! I'm a legit E rank bracer, baby!"
Olivier: **facepalming**
crisis still averted because Zechs is good enough to see the true power that is, Smug Estelle
That scene exists btw and its as hilarious
@@HannyahZ I'd love a link for that please, kinda scared to look it up for spoilers
I think that's not possible because even if you do only mainline quests you would still be of a higher rank because main quests still give BP. However the idea of Estelle acting so high and mighty with a E rank does sound hilarious to say at least 🤣.
It's almost a skill ... But one I've seen in a speedrun once hahaha😂
And Olivier in kind. Man went to jail after committing blatant theft
Its fine Olivier deserved it
Depending on how you deal with Dunan in FC, she could also have beaten him up too.
Estelle the Royal Family abuser.
warhawks noble from erebonia: "time to invade liberl again"
She should have manhandled a certain other member instead.
Olivier: Hi, I'm actually a prince
Kloe: Huh?
Estelle: WHA-
Schera: HOW?
Joshua: literally no reaction XD
Olivert's not the Erebonian crown prince, btw. He himself mentioned he's a royal bastard, meaning he's not eligiable to the throne.

That’s why even at the Erebonian embassy, he doesn’t receive any kind of respect."
Speaking of Kloe, I’ve always thought it’s a shame that the peak of her character development is SO overshadowed by Olivier’s revelation.

I mean, that scene in Sky 3rd about Richard kinda contradicts your idea
@@madaranotsoanonymousnowuch1539 How so? My thought was written with how what we see here is, if anything, a foreshadowing of everything that happens in Sky the 3rd. Sky the 3rd is where this subtext becomes text.
From episode 7:
Estelle: Now let’s combine our forces and find our lost princess! (In reference to Joshua)
Kloe: Lead on, red knight!
Olivier: Ah, then this would make me the lone, wandering prince from a nearby country, here to take back the dark-haired princess, even if by force…
This made me spit out my drink when I heard it in your playthrough since it went right over my head in mine
Im having the exact same experience, I only played each game once for the foreshadowing in this game hit me like a truck. Even this episode when they straight up named a certain important character in the cold steel games.
@@bravetreei cant wait for his cold steel lp 😂
A blonde-haired prince who has passionate ideals, desires peace for his citizens above everything, and has a charming exterior that hides a much more serious side. Later on in the story, it looks like he's just using those around him for his own ends, yet it's eventually revealed that he's still the same man with a heart of gold, as advocated by the player character.
At the very least, Olivier doesn't seem to be haunted by phantoms of the dead, so that's a plus!
Osborne: That can be arranged. (He say, pulling out his "Black As Despair" brand paint kit)
Olivier responds: "Because the way he acts is not beautiful."
For some reason that line always resonated with me, and whenever I think about my favorite lines it is always the first to come to mind.
Estelle: And I'd do it again!
In today’s episode, Nico’s BS power manifests itself by having him discuss a well-written plot twist about 30 minutes before a great example occurs.

I don’t think it’s even possible to be F and G rank, due to mandatory story Bp
At this point in my playthrough I was convinced that Olivier was a spy working for Erebonia to invade Liberl again for some reason. I really wish I had a picture of my face when this reveal went down and I learned that I was both completely right AND completely wrong. It was priceless; one of the best reveals in the game.
I beat Trails twice and even so this is the first time I saw this Duke scene. The amount of extra dialoge you're rewarded with for simply exploring is beyond anything other series offers.
Olivier pulling a Kloe , is the most olivier thing of all
Compared to Kloe, the truth about Olivier was far more subtle, but still not entirely beyond expectations.
The brilliance in the double meaning that Olivier would cause a ruckus if he attended.
honestly, I don't think any of it was staged, Olivier can just be a dumbass some times.
1:10:12 I never noticed that Cid dodges a shadow-pinning dagger from Bleublanc here, what a badass!
You just made me aware of that, shouldn't technically the already A rank bracers be S rank by now?? 😭
@@Doctorrr_ A rank is the highest you can get normally. To become S rank you need to stop a national level crisis. Granted what was happening in FC and right now IS most definitely a national crisis, so I wonder how after everything is over they distribute the achievements for everyone.
@@Doctorrr_ She is a B rank bracer in canon, A rank was only for the game.
But yeah, now you know why I was adamant you keep up with Armand & Ellie in the last game, in addition to Anton & Ricky.
and they continue into the next games.
I love the moments where Nico has to just sit in silence to comprehend things for a moment. This game got going REAL FAST.
He changed the spelling and pronunciation of his name, not just a simple removal of a letter
Olivier (pronounced Oh-liv-ee-ay)
Olivert (pronounced Ah-Liv-ert)
Nico, several videos ago: Olivier is leaving? We'll see him again right? RIGHT?
Me: *cackles deviously*
Oh my, yes. Yes, you do.
As a Trails fan, I'll pull a Akihiko for a moment.
I'VE BEEN WAITING FOR THIS.
Definetely one of the memorable twists in this series, and it has a lot of those.
I love how Nico's reaction to Olivier was exactly the same as Estelle's, step by step.
And this is why
I fucking love Olivier
Peak char
100%. One of my all-time favorite fictional characters.
Forward, relentlessly, never looking back
I think a certain gun toting student would agree with that phrase.
@@fictionfan3699 And I agree with you, if that certain gun toting student were here, I'm sure he'd pitch in with a "hell yeah!"
Optimistic, witty and eventually one of the most well-connected characters on the continent.
Olivert is very much the Trails universe's Nightwing.
*Sees Thumbnail*
Olivier: MY TIME HAS COME AND SO HAVE I!
There is no one in all the world, real or fictional, who is as good at making an entrance as him.
Estelle: Oliver, prince or not, I will smack you with my staff!
Muller: And I would let her.
No Nico, nooo. It's O-l-i-v-e-r-t, Olivert the Prince of Erebonia. Olivier is your little pervy bard friend. They are completely, entirely two different people...yes
Totally, just like Klaudia is totally not Kloe 😂
I'm glad you started following the Rinon, Kitty stories organically without a ton of people directing you to them specifically, (as far as i could see maybe i missed it) so that you could really appreciate the payoff with the bouquet. Not every NPC storyline gets that satisfying a conclusion but a surprising number of them do or at least come close.
Nico yesterday: sorry penguins, no Trails video tonight. I'm feeling burn out.
Nico after this video: sorry guys, no Metaphor video. Too much plot exposition from Trails
People should take breaks from trails. It's great, but it's also a lot.
@@SuperSupersoda nah I played sky to cs2 in 3 months, this series is too good
@@EasilyBoredGamer You have more endurance then me, my friend.
To be fair, considering the other’s rank, it is more realistic Estelle would be a B rank at this point and A after the story.
Oh you gotta be kidding me.
Her canon B rank is mentioned much later in the series. I'd guess based on the events/resolutions that occur between this scene and the time she's mentioned as being B rank, that she is probably "D+" and on the cusp of C here. Definitely not higher than C though.
@@chaosblade077 Oh come on, this ranking is such a damn lie then.
Apparently the writers just don't want her to succeed at anything.
Richard really is Edgeworth. That voice is perfectly predicted. Went from bad guy to good
Olivier actually jokes in SC Chapter 1 that he’s the “lone, wandering prince from a nearby country”.
Wasn’t really a joke it seems.
I can easily say that this was the plot twist reaction I was the most excited to see. Long live our musical prince!
I HAVE BEEN WAITING 52 EPISODES FOR THIS, NICO.
God, do I love this reveal. And love watching people react to this reveal. Glad it hit you as well as it hit so many of us, Nico.
The Haken Gate scene is the peak SC moment for me. Nothing else tops it in the game. The dialogue, the music, the revelation! Ugh so good!
I remember in my first run, Estelle's bracer rank was C during that Olivert scene
Kinda wish it was E to see him disappointed lol
Not seeing Phillip fight was the saddest moment in all of Trails. But also Richard coming back waugh. And Dunan character development!
Fun story: some of my friends and I were watching another of our friends play through SC for the first time. When he got to this part, we totally gaslit him into thinking that Olivier and Olivert are different people. I’m pretty sure he’s not entirely certain they’re the same to this day
That is evil 😂
Cat Translation: Nya~o. Yes, that's exactly right.
“Huh he sounds like a bad guy for later games”
Oh man you have no idea
HELL YES. WE GOT TO THE PART! When I first played this game and saw the anime opening where Olivier is in his Erebonian outfit, my dumb ass thought it was ELNAN and kept waiting for the reveal that the guild receptionist was a prince 😭
Seeing Olivier with his angier expressions is SUCH A TRIP LIKE HOLY HELL.
It is really cool to see the guys you spent most of last game fighting on your side and attacking the guys you're currently fighting.
Technology in the Trails series at this point in the timeline is kinda weird sometimes because the very idea of a cell phone is witchcraft to half of the world but actual fucking magic and airships are daily things
Between this and Metaphor: there's a lot of real world concept an political plannings in fantasy worlds isn't there.
I was explaining the scene to my sister and mostly called him Olivier the whole time lol
Nico take a break for 1 day, and he is back with 2 hours long episode!
I've been waiting for this reveal for so long and Nico's mind being blown did not disappoint.
That was a perfect reaction to the twist of Olivier being a member of the imperial family. XD
So you mean to tell me that all this time that if Estelle was trying to find different ways to kill/get rid of Olivier was going to lead to a huge royal murder scandal?
Nico always avoid using Oliver, not realizing his true potential 🤣
I've been waiting for the moment at 1:33:23 for soooo long and I 100% remember when I learned the truth behind this and my own reaction. This is Legend of Heroes: Trails in the Sky at its best and those long-term set up revelations which recontexualize major parts of whole prior games are what make this overarching series so wonderful
imagine the plot of the game but olivier accidentally dying in battle, how much of a clusterfuck that would be for the plot when the reveal happens lmao
Mueller be warped instantly to save his "boyfriend"
I've waited for months for this. Months. This is the one.
That was a great chapter and some big reveals and twists were in it. ^^
It is so fascinating that Duke Dunan and Richard have redeem themself and they changed for the good. It is also cool that Lt. Colonel Cid came to rescue and Kloe made up her mind and decided to inherit of the throne as princess Klaudia someday. She looks so beautiful in her new outfit. ^_^
Also congratulation for being an A-rank bracer now and it was addressed later, too. ;-)
The twist about Olivier being prince Olivert was so awesome (and quite obvious, too). I am happy that there are all main casts (of the good guys) in this chapter end present and I am looking forward to the next final chapter. ;-)
???: I will handle this:
*A familiar man walks forward*
Olivert: Hey guys it's me Olivier! I didn't tell you, but I'm the crown prince of the Empire. Here's someone you have previously met.
*Another familiar man walks next to him.*
???: Do you recognise me?
Not every game has a novel, but the vast majority of them do. It's weird when one doesn't
and that is why this Stupid Handsome man is the best character in the whole Series
I forgot we were coming to this reveal so I dropped everything I was doing to immediately watch this video
A gameplay tip related to Zemuria ore:
Don’t use the ore to get an ultimate weapon the first chance you get. There’s an opportunity to duplicate it later and get a second ultimate weapon.
