  • Watch the high speed track inspection and trolley inspection conducted by the Commissioner of Railway Safety (CRS) on the 3rd line between Tambaram and Guduvanchery as part of Tambaram - Chengalpattu Third Line Gauge Conversion in Indian Railways.
The CRS and several Railway Officials had left Tambaram on Motor Trolleys well before 1100. They inspected the three stations and many bridges including the Irumbuliyur Grade Separator, Vandaloor Bridge, Urapakkam Bridge to make sure the various safety aspects such as clearances are up to the safety standards.
05119 Rameswaram - Banaras (Manduadih) Express led by Lallaguda WAP7 37474 briefly interrupted the inspection while the Team was were under the new rail over bridge near KM 36/100. There were short spells of rains that had dampen the line's ballast, eliminating a typical CRS Dust Storm observed in New Lines.
Royapuram WAP7 30570 took charge of the CRS Special and passed the Urapakkam - Vandalur section at around 1330 doing about 115 ~ 120 kmph. At about 1415, the special rake along with a spare Inspection Car that was earlier left at the Tambaram, left PF4 of the station, heading towards Madras Beach.
This Tripling or the third line by means of the Metre Gauge Line Conversion would help in streamlining the rail traffic with Chengalpattu - Tambaram - Chennai Beach Suburban EMU local train services and the occasional freight trains no longer requiring to be looped for the Mainline Passenger Train services to go ahead. The 11 km long Tambaram - Guduvanchery stretch comprises two Automatic Block Sections and three intermediate stations namely Perungalattur, Vandalur & Urappakkam.
Tambaram - Chengalpattu Metre Gauge (MG) train services on the then only MG line were stopped in June 2007 to facilitate Gauge Conversion as part of 'Project Unigauge'. Since then the works were going on extremely slow with the rails and sleepers of the old Metre Gauge line not even removed in the first four years. The project gathered a greater pace only in the recent years and with the commissioning of this section, the Tambaram - Chengalpet section has become a Triple line section.
The 11 km long Guduvancheri - Singaperumal Koil stretch was the first to have the gauge conversion works completed and CRS Inspection took place on September 29, 2020. Following it was the 9 km Singaperumal Koil - Chengalpattu stretch which was inspected by CRS on March 03, 2021. The remaining section between Tambaram and Guduvancherry had light loco trials on September 17, 2021 before being inspected by the CRS on October 21, 2021.
