We got a green fingers from Craig last year and put itin full sun and it really struggled, we moved it next to a bamboo in the shade and its still putting out leaves in middle of winter and looks superb (North Lincs)

I've found fatsia Polycarpa to be the least hardy in my garden which is contrary to most people's experience. The winter of 2022 killed it off at -4 but my japonica and spiders web were fine. Was a younger plant though so I wonder if they are not that hardy when young. Might bite the bullet and get another .

Yes, many of the ‘hardy’ exotics are fairly tender when young. As a general rule, when the stems become woody they are much more resilient to cold.

You've convinced me on the f. polycarpa, I'll have to get one ordered! Have you seen any mature specimens? I'm wondering how the long term growth habit differs from the f. japonica.

I’d say it grows just as fast once established but branches a little less. If you prune the top growth F. polycarpa will send out side shoots and fill out more 👍

Fatsia polycarpa is good one. Unphased here by 4 nights -6c in zone 8a, 2nd year in ground, similar sized than shown.
They also stay somewhat more modest in size, compared to f. japonica.

Our planted one grows 2ft a year roughly, but the lighter foliage keeps it looking more airy and less full. Love these plants ➡️🪴

Thanks for watching. Yes ‘Sweet Winter’ is similar to ‘Soft Caress’ but with slightly thicker leaves.
