To get clean audio you need three things: good mic placement, clean preamps on your audio recorder and a mic with low noise. Even the most expensive recorder will give bad results if you have a hissy mic, and vice versa. So have your mic and recorder on the same level of quality, they're equally important. Good mic placement is free so remember that always, no matter what equipment you usr ;) (Oh, there is a fourth thing: do your best to cancel out all the noise you don't want to hear.)
And also TELL your sound guy to tell you to do it again. Sound guys so often act like whipping boys. No, they are half of the movie. Make sure they know that.
The best part of this video is that the makers had the sense to REVIEW and SUMMARIZE. This is a basic teaching technique that 99 out of 100 videos forget to employ. Good work boys!
I think you nailed the top 4, but perhaps a tip in post: use a bit of compression in dialogue and if still need to separate dialogue from ambient & effects, make sure they aren't sharing all the same frequencies so much, give them a little different EQ for further separation
holy crap I've been trying to figure how you shoot and edit scenes and still have the recorded sound consistent afterwards, and I think this is what I was wondering. Thank you!!
That first tip really helped! I have access to a sound effects library but I always felt like it was unprofessional or like I was cheating when I used it & as if I wasn’t a professional filmmaker. That helped a lot!
question: when using sunlight (which changes) ...do you manually set the aperture and shutter or go on auto .....i ask b/c the sun is changing , and hence if you went manual, you would have to constantly adjust
Thanks! Quick question. If I was shooting a straightforward sit-down interview indoors, with, say, a Rode NTG3 boomed close to the source, would you recommend using a normal foam windscreen to reduce plosives, etc or just having the microphone bare to have slightly better audio quality?
HELLO I BOUGHT A WIRELESS MIC SENNHEISER EW 112P G4 , I WOULD LIKE TO MAKE A SCI FI MOVIE FOR NETFLIX , WHAT KIND OF BOOM MIC AND ADAPTOR DO YOU RECOMMEND FOR PROFESSIONAL SOUND ?
Important question: My camera audio is at 4800 khz but using my audio recorder I am able to record at 9600khz. Which one should I use for my recorder sample rate, same as camera audio that I use for syncing, or 9600khz?
48Khz 24bit is what your audio recorder should be set to. 96Khz is for oversampling like when you want to slow down the audio in post or for recording sound effects.
can you help me? i can't decide between 120 d vs 300 d ...and between mini and full size light dome ....i also need a fill light and a hair light in addition to the key light ...currently on my channel i am using a lowel kit ...but it is tungsten and way too hot for a kitchen youtube channel ...what would you recommend?
Start with a 120D and the full size dome, it'll provide more then enough light for your setup. You can add either two 672's or the Tri-8's depending on your budget. They would provide nice fill and hair lights, in a pinch you could also use the M9's as a hair light - or a Mini20.
We already know that this is spam but we are a studio that is starting with a serious series and we need support although I do not know if you want but I assure you that it will be worth it only if you want
I started watching a movie the other day that had won numerous awards from film festivals. It looked good. But within moments of watching it, I noticed the sound was as dry as ever, zero ambience, if that's the right term. I couldn't watch it.
What's your best sound tip?
Aputure hiring a sound person for projects

TIP: If the sound guy says "do it again", do it again. Trust the guy with the headphones.
And also TELL your sound guy to tell you to do it again. Sound guys so often act like whipping boys. No, they are half of the movie. Make sure they know that.

A pro tip from a real audio engineer. Thanks a lot.
Don't forget to record a track of "room tone" for every film scene area.
holy crap I've been trying to figure how you shoot and edit scenes and still have the recorded sound consistent afterwards, and I think this is what I was wondering. Thank you!!
Ambience 👍
Is this not tip 3...?
@@Marsattacks69 Just an important reminder for those who may have missed the "tip".
Yeah, that’s tip 3
Y'all need to make a sound subscription course... It needs to be serious, deep and advanced.
Deity microphones has some of the best content on this platform - for free! ua-cam.com/users/DeityMicrophones
Best sound tip: use TWO sources ...ie two lapels or one lapel and one boomed ....if you don't get the audio, you're screwed :)
Turn off air conditioning if the vent is near your actors.
You aren't wrong, but damn this sucks in Texas in July!!! lol!!!
matt miller lol I completely agree
Turn it off anywhere in the room! Or even the next room over
That first tip really helped! I have access to a sound effects library but I always felt like it was unprofessional or like I was cheating when I used it & as if I wasn’t a professional filmmaker. That helped a lot!
it would be great if you added examples from films to better illustrate your points on what should be "cinematic" audio.
They're so close in frame. I want them to kiss.
😂
Gayyeeeee
Yeah, 'social distance' was not yet invented at that time :D
The best tip is to convince production to make the film in locations where undesired noises can be controlled.
Miss this guy. Loved those days.

So awesome you had a guy that worked with Mark Walhberg on your show that's so awesome I subscribed
Great tips. Thank you so much.
Great tips, thanks a lot.
Now you tell me! #4 is my favorite cuz I learned it the hard way on set and later in post. :/
Having a well recorded dialogue and produced music make the job waaaay easier when mixing the final audio tracks
Thank you just subscribed
I’d love to hear examples with this. Thanks for video.
question: when using sunlight (which changes) ...do you manually set the aperture and shutter or go on auto .....i ask b/c the sun is changing , and hence if you went manual, you would have to constantly adjust
Thank you! I bought a boom pole and recorder and have no experience. Do you know if you need to adjust the recorder in anyway mid shoot?
Mix positioning to the scene was a big deal. Matching sound with the sight.
What mic for indoor scenes? Staying away from lavalieres.
The last one is dependent on a co-operative cast? Or do you guys do it in a studio.
If you record “clean audio” and decide to use it, it might not be in lip-sync with the footage shot earlier. So when do you use the clean audio?
Thanks! Quick question. If I was shooting a straightforward sit-down interview indoors, with, say, a Rode NTG3 boomed close to the source, would you recommend using a normal foam windscreen to reduce plosives, etc or just having the microphone bare to have slightly better audio quality?
but why is it all in mono? are you doing the wild recordings in stereo but the dialogues in mono to create the scene?
Thank you for the tips!
I wish there was more examples of the audio when you explained it.. like use actual audio as the example

Sound Devices 740T is a smooth clean quality audio noticeable at post...

Deity Microphones what about oversampling is good for sound effects?
FlipFilms you have more samples when you want to do something funky with your sound effects recordings such as slowing it down
Can you tell us how to do a good soundadministration for post?
In the Broll shot What was the audio rig used?
Zoom F8n with some Lectrosonic wireless kits. S-Mic 2 on the boom.

We already know that this is spam but we are a studio that is starting with a serious series and we need support although I do not know if you want but I assure you that it will be worth it only if you want
Is it too late to win the mic?

You can always add reverberation in post. You cannot remove it.
I don't allow any man that close to me when talking to each other.

You guys are standing awkwardly close together haha, but appreciate the tips
Why are you standing so close 🤔 So uncomfortable
Omg he has up talk. Hate up talk
