- UFC 296: Why Leon Edwards Dominated Colby Covington Full Fight Highlights In the culmination of the UFC's 2023 calendar, UFC 296 featured two headline world title fights, showcasing dominant champions and exciting matchups.
Welterweight champion Leon Edwards, with an impressive 22-3 overall record and a remarkable unbeaten streak of 13 fights, successfully defended his title against the No. 3-ranked Colby Covington in the main event. Edwards secured an easy unanimous decision victory, further solidifying his status as a dominant force in the welterweight division. Covington, now 1-3 in title fights, faced challenges from former champion Kamaru Usman, with a win over Rafael dos Anjos in June 2018 that was later stripped due to injury. #ufc296 #leonedwards #colbycovington
In the co-main event, flyweight champion Alexandre Pantoja demonstrated his prowess by retaining his title against Brandon Royval via a unanimous decision. With a dominant outing, Pantoja now holds the second-highest number of wins in the UFC's flyweight division, totaling 11.

The main card also featured Shavkat Rakhmonov, extending his undefeated record to 18-0 with a second-round submission of veteran Stephen "Wonderboy" Thompson. This marked Thompson's first submission defeat in his professional career.
Former interim lightweight champion Tony Ferguson faced Paddy Pimblett in a main card matchup, resulting in Ferguson's seventh consecutive loss. Pimblett, while struggling to finish Ferguson and showing signs of fatigue in the third round, secured a unanimous decision victory with all three judges scoring the bout 30-27.
Featherweights Josh Emmett and Bryce Mitchell opened the pay-per-view card in a short-notice fight, with Emmett delivering a spectacular knockout via an overhand right within two minutes, leaving Mitchell unable to recover.

People don’t seem to understand that it’s possible to get dominated in a fight in a technical and skill based performance. Getting ragdolled all around the octagon or getting finished easily isn’t the only form of domination in a fight
Leon on a technical level completely dismantled and broke down Colby over the course of 5 rounds
Most definitely...he worked him every angle pretty much
There was not a second of actual domination from ANYONE in this fight. Dont believe me? Go look at the numbers... colby out struck leon by almost 50 strikes. And also leon limped into and out of the press conference. The sig strikes qere admitted to be mostly leg kicks on leons side, but colby landed a leg kick almost every time leon did. Colby has 5 minutes of control time and leon doesnt even have a minute. Now, this isnt to say i think Colby won.. What im saying is, is that one man was scared and running away and the other man was glad of it. But Colby did not lose this fight due to domination, there qasnt anything technical about what they did, colby lost this fight due to perception (rightfully) but if you were to just look at the statistics without seeing the fight (even if you still went the way of leon) there was absolutely no time in this fight where ANYONE dominated ANYTHING.
Colby's foot broke 30 seconds into round 1...
Colby should’ve taken a fight or two before this one. Ring Rust is real.
@@spencerisaacs4349I bet my house ur Caucasian.
Leons always been underrated and under valued even after beating cowboy, but he's getting his dues now.
Love watching Coby get beat up, his pre-fights comments got his butt kicked 😅😅
Colby dominated this fight outstruck him by about 50 strikes and had way more control time. Pre fight comments got you emotional rooting for the wimp and happy cus he landed some leg kicks gave a lil boo boo 😂
Dominated 😅😂 if you don't knock it off, DELUSIONAL bro , Colby lost that fight PERIOD.
Leon only landed 60 some strikes in 5 rounds. Usman is the one that kicked his butt.
@@YungPacyou’re in every video of Leon Vs Colby coping
Leon dominated because Colby was scared. Look at the sigh of relief he gave when the first round finished. It was literally a case of the mouth wrote cheques that he couldn’t cash
No he just exhaled strongly because he was tired from the first round .
@@justchillin5200Nah bro Colby knew what he got himself into but Leon even is a very disciplined fighter despite wat Colby said because i would have tried to take his head off 😂
He was def scared of those kicks
If you genuinely believe this I feel bad for you. He broke his foot a minute into the fight. I love how he was magically just scared to fight Leon but wasn’t against Usman who was pound for pound number 1… clearly broke his foot and had to fight a certain way to deal with the pain
@@dannywhite7786he believed he could beat usman. He just came up slightly short. He knew Leon would dominate this fight. He saw Leon beat the p4p number 1 twice convincingly and realised that he wasn’t at that level. Colby shouldn’t even be ranked lmao. He should sit at number 15 at best and let the new guys run through him to get their rankings
Leon showed the levels between him and the contenders in his last 2 fights. His grappling stood up against the best pressure wrestler in the division and if it wasnt fir Colbys panic twirl and just being an elite grappler, he was getting finished. No one in the division bests him on the feet.
Belal will be in fir a long fight, he is like a Colby with weaker wrestling but better striking which plays into Leons hands. Right now only Shaved Cat has a chance but this will be a big step up from Wonderboy, Neal & Gastalum.
That said, Womderboy might be one of the best matchups for Leon skill for skill. Great TDD and the only other elite striker in the division ehich would be a chess match. It might sound good on paper but it wont be one for the casuals as itll be a more akin to a prime Canelo vs Floyd
Leon called it right, the divison (well most of UFC) is stacked with wrestler boxers. Stuff theur ground gane and they'ee gonna need to meet you in the middle. Shame Colby was scared of getting his new teeth rearranged
Well said
Shaved Cat 😂
The Shaved Cat will choke your boi out just you wait for it
Colby has 1 win in 4 years by decision to Masvidal (right before he retired).
He is 0-3 in title shots the past 4 years.
How tf is he ranked?!
WWE wanted a white US born champ. They believed in his lies. WWE should know what lies are.
Ranking is not only about losses and wins. It’s about performance. Colby gave the champion a run for his money twice followed by dominating Masvidal.
@@gredofa2262 someone taking two whole years off shouldn’t keep their #2 rank REGARDLESS. And Masvidal retired one fight later, the fact it went to decision should say enough.
And Leon did better than Colby against Usman, and then did the same to Colby. Colby overhyped , boring, and his mouth got him every big opportunity.
But its all good bc Colby Bummington/Duckington got destroyed and looked like a complete amateur.

@@Syner56fax bro Colby really got taken to the seventh layer of hair
Because Colby isn’t as good as people thinks. He has 0 wins over any of the current top 15 welterweights. His last 3 wins are against guys who were each on 2 fight losing streaks. He sat out 13 to 21 months after his last 2 wins and only got his last 2 title shots because Dana shares his political views and wanted a champion that could draw the Trump voter viewership.
I don't/Never have understood the Hype.
@@Syner56People were giving him too credit for having 2 close fights with Usman.
Colby’s cardio and pace got him 0 significant strikes
Thats false he landed 34 to leons 47. And it was admitted the majoriry of leons 47 were leg kicks. If you look at TOTAL strikes colby actually significantly out landed leon. And more control time. Just goes to show perception is everything. Leon didnt out fight colby, he didnt out class colby, he realized colby was worried ab that head kick and he was glad colby wasnt advancing. Hell leon didnt do much other than kick colby in the leg. But the reason Colby is the definite loser here is because he did not fight his style of fight. Leon being as dangerpus as he is kept colby on his back foot and thats not a good look for a wrestler whos whole gameplan is to come forward. Js.
@@spencerisaacs4349 lol that last round when Leon just held on in full guard?? Dude Colby didn’t show up. Didn’t land a single significant blow. Hop off his meat
@@TubeSavage i do believe you need to re read my comment sir. Everything i said. Or get off my meat.
The significant strikes stat is so out. Count up the strikes that Colby actually landed, not ones blocked by Leon and then compare to the stats. Apparently Colby landed 10 in the 1st (can't remember a single landed strike and I've watched it twice (because I'm a sadist, but enjoy the technical aspect), then 13 in the 2nd. That's a travesty

@@jackals1876yeah you’re right. But so is he tbh. Leon is just better then Colby in every way lmao. Colby can’t hang with the top fighters. Never could tbh. He’s a low level gate keeper for the top 15. He should sit between 15-10 and let the up and comers beat him to get their ranking.
But according to COVINGTON all the judges were against him because of his POLITICAL STANCE 😂😂😂😂
Colby got cursed like everyone who gets involved with Trump. Lol
Leon Edwards can straight up box.. His head movement and foot work are second to none in the sport.. The only way to beat him is to take him down and try to submit him. Covington just doesn't have what it takes..
If he fought aggressively like he does against everyone else he probably would’ve won off points
😂😂😂That’s why he less than 3 more significant strikes per round on a washed up Colby with a broken foot. Leon would of gotten dominated by prime versions of Colby or Usman and probably Masvidal as well.
You're clearly delusional if you think Leon has the best head movement or footwork XD bros been rocked/almost finished by Nate Diaz, not even a gassed Conor got rocked bad by Nate lol.
That would be Sean O’Malley currently not Leon, stop being a 🥩🏇

Fugg dem leg kicks bro. First one would gimme a dead leg and I’d be dunzo 😂
I'm a big Colby fan. After that performance, I really just don't want to hear the mumbling anymore, it's wasting my time. I want to see what he says he is. He needs 3-4 quick wins against high level opponents at WW or LW without talking, otherwise I'm not interested to buy his PPV again. His new style is awful, he's got worse at wrestling as the years have rolled on. Either win against high level opponents if you believe you are the best, or hang it up and tip your hat. Your best performance was UFC 245 when you were at ATT. Live with it and get some therapy, because the character has caught up with you dude.

He could be a joke now, but what colby said about Lebron is still true
And every decent American w/ balls and brain (ladies of courage & purpose count too) speak for the truth - LeBron is just a media cuck little boy regurgitating the performative pieties of mind numbing, spirit crushing woke globalists who despise and laugh at you, and us. Casuals! In the first UFC fights, 500 lbs guys would fight 200 lbs guys. When you are disadvantaged, the strategy was to chop the legs. Chop the legs and so goes the body. Edwards followed a good game plan neutralizing Colby.
You have the voice, you have the energy, you have the ability to write a script. However, you should bring someone good with cgi and stuff on your team. The only downside to this was the extremely jarring and low quality video.
Colby is the god of embarrassment
Not saying he's a good guy or anything but he apparently broke his foot about 30 seconds into the fight.Hard to hop around on a broken foot if its true, especially against Edwards
Seems like the fight was boring. Theres literally no highlights.
Once the lead leg is battered its game over, you cant cut off angles because of the pain, no power gets through when jabbing, leon broke down colby quite well through till the 5th
Colby stated he was "poked" deliberately onh is leg.
Why did Leon Edwards dominate Colby Covington in their fight? Because hes a better fighter...lol dont need a video breakdown
Colby has aquired gatekeeper status faster than any fighter in any weight class in history. BUT i will say this. I truly believe he will be a Bisping caliber of gatekeeper and will win a belt one day.
Leon is a very good strong fighter
It depends on the opponent to bring on the pressure. Lady Covington was doing nothing to deserve the title. She should do at least 3 or 5 more fights before the next title shot. But then she’s to old and her titis hanging down 🤣

he broke his foot in the 1st remember
Why was he never in a cast? How come no doctors deemed it broken when he got evaluated after? Why has he had no surgery on his foot?
Sounds more like he needed something to say after that sorry excuse of a performance.

Colby did break his foot, imagine losing to someone who broke his foot 😭
oh yeah colby got off some decent punches didn't he???😂😂😂 not a scratch on Leon
False. Colby broke his foot in the first minute.

@@Syner56You can look at alot of other fighters, alot of fighters go in injured. If Leon came in with anything broken and lost you would've been making that excuse my boy. It wasn't a good performance by either fighter.
Colby broke his foot in the first round. Your analysis is off.
How?.
Threw a kick that hit leons elbow.

Way to make it look like Colby got beat up. We all know who really won that
not colby 😂
No way you actually believe that dawg
☠️
🤣🤣🤣yea, it was UNBELIEVABLY clear that Leon won
1. Colby landed 56%of those 109 TOTAL STRIKES
(Leon Landed 56% of his 65)
(More accurate)
2. Leon had 57 Significant strikes
(Colby had 44)
(More Damage)
3. Leon got 2 of 3 Takedowns
(Colby got 2 OF 10)
(Out wrestled)
4. Leon had 2 sub attempts to Colbys 0
(Out Grappled)
5. Leon had a reversal, Colby had none
(Out wrestled p2)
6. All 3 judges had it 49-46
The thing is, if you watched the fight from start to finish, it wouldn’t (shouldn’t) be hard to see that Colby got absolutely destroyed, as if he was an amateur.
Only argument you can TRY and give Colby, is that he gave more effort. But even that doesn’t make sense, because he stayed shelled up like a little girl the entire fight until the last couple minutes.
It also helps you not Look like a POS if you don’t root for someone speaking on someone’s dead father. 🤷🏻♂️ But what else do you expect from a guy with 1 win in 4 years (by decision) to Masvidal right before he retired?

170 division stinks
Colby won 2 of 5. He def wasnt dominated😂
lol keep coping. your boy got embarassed
It was A LOT closer to 5-0 than it was to 3-2 lbs. Colby looked like shit, Leon didn't even have to really try lol
Im gonna go with what every judge said 4-1, not 3-2
it was 4-1 Leon won easily
Colby won a round Leon gave him by wrestling.
2nd where was the damage on Leon???? just saying one man left walking and one punk left limping walking like a granny with a pole up their arse

@@Syner56He didn't even get close to being "destroyed", terrible performance on both sides. Leon didn't do much against a broken foot Colby. Stats are pretty close with Leon having more Sig. Strikes and Colby more control time. Leon failed all sub attempts. Lol talking about Colbys win to the title shot but Leon's last win to get the title was a washed Nate Diaz/Donald Cerrone eye poking Belal to a no contest. He actually had a 9 fight win streak to the title not including a no contest. Colby only had 1 loss before getting his title shot and Leon had 3 losses before his.
@@Syner56The fact that you think having 2 sub attempts means you outgrappled shows how delusional you are, if he can't sub him and doesn't have more control time that means he didn't outgrapple. Lol these biased kids bruh

@@rayplaysgames_RPG So why no cast? Why hasn't a doctor deemed it broken? (when they evaluated him after). Why hasn't he needed surgery on his foot?
He could be timid bc of nerves, ring rust, and daddy Trump was watching, IDK how you guys still buy into the the biggest liar in the sport.
