- Scenery is self - inspiring and a mindset you have to decide to do. I like to plug in about four hours at a time when it comes to scenery in most cases - but not always. The longer you spend at it, the better you get at it. It's simple really when you think about it. Furthermore, the more time you plug in, the easier and more fun it is.

This is now the third time I’ve rewatched this episode. I’ve rewatched many episodes before but I really really enjoy this video. Thank you so much Boomer, your work is not just educational and entertaining but also very comforting in certain ways also. My cat, Franklun, passed last week and it has been quite difficult as he was my daily companion. I very much appreciate seeing Dusty about the layout. 😻

I really feel like your channel could have been a PBS special, 12-21 minutes of pure art and animation on a model railroad. Thank you so much for sharing! I love the addition of the guardrail there toward the end. Makes it look and feel like there used to be a crossing at one point and then the railroad said, "No thanks! You can go over the new overpass just down the way now!" A very common change made in modern traffic situations. I absolutely love aspects like that on model layouts that show significant changes to infrastructure. Aside from the realism, or telling a story, it connects what you're seeing now to something that supposedly happened before. It's almost as if you had already modeled the crossing and now you have made the changes to the track and road to turn it into the shape it is now.

Definitely liked how you linked the T pins together for the static grass machine. Thats a good idea and i think i will try that.

In the Zone, I have heard that in your Vlogs, most modelers are artist. Maybe they can only draw a stick man but art is way more than that. I will bet you the 19.6 subscribers would love to have there layout looking like yours. You just have to put in the time, think out the composition, motivation and repletion till you get good results. Me, I like when I am in the zone! thanks Boomer!
Sounds good! This is the advantage of a smaller layout. We can focus in more on the scenes that support the railroad we wish to model.😁

I love the ripe seed tops. You did not give away that secret. I have been experimenting trying to achieve that without much luck. Well done. Once again a master class. Too bad the end screen stuff blocked the view of your masterpiece. Thank you again, your videos light up my day.
Seed tops were same way as the wall. Paint the grass tops with diluted matte medium and blow on some flock - Woodland Scenics - Plant Hues - FS629.😁

Things get tough in HO when you constantly think in O Scale. ;-)
Starts off with a wall weathered to perfection, apparently it can be more perfect :) He won't be happy with it of course, he'll realize its a perfectly pleasant place for birds to take a dump and have to guano up the walls next.
Lol . . . Can you imagine if you had ten years to build a layout in which you were condemned to live on . . . lol. How detailed would you want it to be? ;-)

Great video Boomer, you can almost smell the damp moss around that wall. I think that would be a great place for an old railroad maintenance trolley, maybe just a few rotting planks and rusty wheels would be all that's left of it.

It's amazing how fast the time fly's when you plug into scenery.
I've seen others say it before, but I take notes on every video, typed into notepad. Then control-F and search is easy. Too much valuable information to trust to my rusty old memory 🙄 Thanks for all you do - Bill.

I see you have proven what I have suspected. One spike in the scenery for static grass doesn't give you enough charge.
Beautiful work.
I find Static grass applicators to be "hit-or-miss." The trick is creating an effective "static" field and the grass really seems to stand up. I also use a vacuum cleaner to help stand it up later as well. Furthermore. I don't use the applicator for any grass larger than 7mm. I pinch & stab in the larger 12mm grass. It seems to look better with random patches.
I've always used two or three grounding pins in the scenery. Made up a special "splitter" ground wire splits into three separate wires with their own alligator clips.
Also... Having your scenery being slightly wet helps to conduct the static charge/grounding, at least that's been my experience. If the scenery is dry, I mist on a fine spray of water or IPA prior to applying the matte medium wherever the grass will be applied.
@@boomerdiorama Good tip on pinching grass longer than 7mm Boomer... Going to have to try that on the module I'm working on now.
Static applicators are definitely not created equal... Their construction and the power output of the negative ion generator (which generates the static charge) have a great deal of influence on how well the applicator works.
I've found that a large metal plate inside the container that holds the static grass, helps charge the fibers better. This plate is connected to the output of the static charge generator. Also, a metal wire screen works much better than a plastic one. It's important that there's a charging wire connected to the metal screen as well.
The Woodland Scenics "Grass King" looks like a well done rig, but it's got a plastic screen. Not sure what the output voltage is either.
For best results, an applicator should have at least 12-15kV output, with higher than that being better. I custom built my own applicator and used a 30kV negative ion generator. The charge arcs about 20mm and gives you a pretty good shock if you're careless with it, but it puts out a lot of fibers making for a pretty dense effect without doing multiple applications.
The Woodland Scenics applicator is about average in my books. I use a 12 volt transformer. But then it depends like you say about other factors. I like the "metal screen idea. 😉@@WHJeffB

excellent work as usual. My hobby room (the roof of the house) is too hot in the summer months, so I'm restricted to winter period not to roast/toast away in there, so in the intermediate period, I'm an arm chair modeller, looking at how others work and apply those learnings to my own work.

that would be cool to see a rusted vehicle (become tarp is half off) by that wall. I though that stray was a broken pipe and the electric pole was supposed to be there (thought it looked cool) but it looks amazing once the pole was placed....

Thinning Tamiya (which is fantastic paint, thanks for sharing that with the rest of us!), do you ever worry that there's not enough binder left to hold the pigment onto whatever you're painting? Most paints recommend that you don't thin them more than 40-50% and prefer thinning around 10-20% for most applications.
I don't worry about "binder" with terrain painting. The IPA doesn't split the paint molecules it only suspends them. You need to suspend and spread out acrylic paint molecules (pigment) to achieve transparency with opaque acrylic paint. Never had a problem, it sticks forever. If I paint a specific model then I don't thin it as much. I have painted hundreds of locomotives like this finishing with clear coat and never had an issue.

You're doing it right. Second, You didn't talk about the Cattails(?), the yellow things (see we are paying attention). Did you just take some field grass and stick them into some yellow ground foam?

In some countries being engrosed in an acivity for 4-5 hours is an addiction which requires an intervention. However your addiction is perfection which I feel can be allowed to continue without intervention.

Just add glue (matte medium), with a wet brush, like a I did on the wall, and blow flock onto them from a folded piece of printer paper. ;-)

The moss really does change the whole scene. I love how the tall grass turned out with the light highlights on the tips. It really adds the depth there.
I did have one question. How bad is modgpoge matte medium really. It is a fraction of golden products, but I’m concerned about flex ability when using on trees and such.
I plan on getting the fiber paste and pumice paste for sure.
Now I’m intiuged about where the wall scene is evolving too.
I don't use modgpodge. I was raised on artist products where most "hobby" derivatives come from anyway. I want flexibility in all my adhesives, especially terrain modeling like trees, etc.

I will just bite the bullet. How long does that 16 oz bottle of GAC 500 last you on average? I figure with watering down for trees and such probably a long time.
I’am hestitating to comment on this nice work but I think your vegetation can be even better if you add more variation in it. On the reference photo it’s not only grass that you see.

Woodland Scenics - Plant Hues - # FS 629. Wet brush with matte medium over tops of field grass and blow on the "Plant Hues" from folded printer paper. The same way I did the wall.😁
I hope to do 10% as well... Do you thin the Matte medium or Liquitex or use it straight out of the bottle? It seems runny.
I like it runny (thinned 50/50) when I do this type of scenery so it doesn't dry too fast.

I'm curious, when or if the focus of the project gets stale how do you work around it ? My first module is about 60% complete after but othe projects within the project are trying to lure me away. Cars, locomotives, ect.

Great question! When things get stale, I just switch focus like you said. But the focus is always on the model railroad (River Road) I set out to build.
It helps to plan and create a story around the layout and write things down about it. Believe me, I have other subjects I like to model locomotives, rolling stock, vehicles, etc. but I am committed to finishing section two before I allow myself to get lured away to other subjects. Having said that, I do not stray far from the vision I have for the layout.😁
To add Green on this wall I understand you use médium to glue instead White glue.
You seem to use much more médium than White glue for everything. Why this préférence?
White glue dry's brittle with a sheen. Matte medium dry's flat and stays flexible.
