- Hopefully you have a warranty for your GoPro Session, but if not then it is possible to take it apart without destroying it. If you need to replace the lens, battery, or if its not powering on or charging then here is how you take it apart.

*This battery reconditioning program exceeded my presumptions. It worked on any drill battery, several AA and AAA batteries, **batery.repair** and any camera battery. The steps are simple and the act itself is exciting to do. No matter what type of battery you`ve got, it is sure to function again!*
It’s amazing, the man is still saving my ass long after he’s gone. You were a true champion and will be missed. R.I.P.

@@charliedenny1 JC was taken from the community in 2018 due to a motorcycle accident. He is hugely missed.
@@rot8tion330 Thats really sad. :( m sorry to hears this news.
@@rot8tion330 wow its been that long 😭 RIP BUDDY

Here is my other channel. Haven't posted much to it yet but I'll be posting a lot more next month after school ends - ua-cam.com/video/grCIejtG5NE/v-deo.html
Project Blue Falcon link not working
Thanks for letting me know. Should work now
Making use of the ua-cam.com/users/postUgkxcJ22tnHH9l1vjdIdEIG27iOG55P7LXI8 reconditioning plan, I just saved 2 auto batteries from being completely junked. The guides were very simple to follow. I wish I would have found this years ago! You may use the guide to recondition any battery type
man you are the master of fixing things!!! every fixing website did not get where you went and said my gopro isn't fixable. Thanks so much! place go on with those videos this is amazing!
EDIT: EVEN Gopro itself said its unfixable and you made it.
By the way, the gopro service here in Germany is horrible. I have a broken lens (even if lenscap is ok) and they said this is not covered by warranty.
Wow I didn't know a broken lens isn't covered by the warranty. This makes me wonder what is covered now.
Dude, I had an incident with my brand new Session 5 earlier tonight, one of my Oomph motors decided to come off the arm of my Chameleon mid flight, and my quad flipped upside down and smashed right into a wall, went to go recover it only to find that one of the motors was just hanging off the ESC by its wires and all 4 screws were gone, then I picked it up and discovered that my GoPro took the majority of the impact, however it still records, but I get nothing on the small display, the small button on the back is not working, there's a crack along the bit where the charging port is, and the metal piece on the front took a hefty bang.
I searched online and all I found was the shady ifixit page too, thankfully my mate sent me the link to this video, so I have a bit more faith now that I might be able to do something to fix it!!
Thanks so much for this video. :)
Man... 7 yrs later and it just helped me out ✌🏼😎👍🏼 I have mine apart and ten minutes ago boxed up the parts and shelved it! Lol! Now at least I have one more thing to check! Thanks!
Who’s still watching Project Blue Falcon videos in 2022?✋
Of cours he did a Vido for me in the Future - thank for helping me out again and again... getting wet eyes now...!
Amazing isn't it, was thinking the same
Suggest trying this to remove the case from the AL lens frame...
- Take a length of bare solid copper wire (say 6", 18-22 gauge?) and wrap it around the case immediately over the seam.
- Twist the wire ends together to snug it around the case. Ensure the wire is directly in contact with the glue/seam all the way around.
- Use a solder iron to heat the copper wire, touching only the wire and never the case. Move the solder iron along the copper wire as to not over heat and burn the case. Work on one or two sides of the case at a time and get those loose before proceeding with the other sides.
- You may re-tighten the wire as you go in order to work it into the seam if needed.
Rest In Peace. No one has come close to replacing your knowledge base. THX yet again.
Good job! Thank you, sir.
The helpful folks at I-Shagged-It-Up left me in doubt about their procedure, which prompted me to search further, leading me to your video. TY again!
Had an issue with my GoPro Hero Session not turning on. Sounds like one (if not both) of the ribbon wires coming loose is a major issue. Instead of taking mine apart like in this video, I tried squeezing the outside of the camera case around the area where the ribbon wire are and...it worked!
AWESOME video! I need to change the battery in my camera. It got old & worn & will no longer charge. I'll be trying this soon!
Was gonna say thank you, wasn't expecting this in the comment section... 😥 well thank you anyways buddy!
I had a crash that caused my session 5 to go out of focus. No other damage, just a loss of focus. I had not purchased any extended warranty, so I thought I was screwed. I contacted GoPro to see if there was anyway to fix. I was 100% honest about what happened, and after a few days of emails GoPro issued me an RMA and covered the camera under the original warranty. Had a new camera delivered about a week later.
I would recommend exhausting the RMA procedure with GoPro before trying to fix it, but this video is an awesome resource (like all PBF videos) should GoPro refuse to replace your camera.
Thats awesome info! Thanks for sharing for everyone.
Right back at you, man! Your videos have been a ton of help!
@FesterFPV Hi FesterI am having a similar issue, my camera is out of focus, but GoPro refuses to replace it they are demanding me the receipt, even do the camera is still on warranty.
Did they ask you for a receipt or they just check your Serial Number?
Thanks
Thank you for posting this information. I did not purchase the warranty and now I discovered a small crack forming in my lens itself right in the middle and it makes a blurry spot on my images. It looks like I have to go balls deep into this to replace the lens.
did you ever replace your lens? or source a new one?
You helped me 5 years later bro.
saving my ass once again.
Thanks. We all missed you
Finally someone got one of these little suckers apart in one piece and ACTUALLY fixed it!!!! Hero5 Session??
Missing your video man ! Rest in peace 😢
As I am also missing this genius of a man.
What? What happened to him?!??!
another great vid!
Today i bent the tin on the back of my session and it separated from that plastic housing.
From what you saw from your teardown would you feel safe saying that it is still waterproof even tho the back aluminum is separated from the frame??
We miss you man ❤️
ty, helped me. mine is acting weird and i believe it's the battery. now i can replace it. wish i could just wire it up to my quad like pilots did with the older gopros. maybe make a vidoe on how to do so. i noticed the battery was 3.7 volts.
Any links to buy the new batteries?
Thanks man i crashed and meseed up my lens on the inside and all the replacement video are foe the protective lens not the real lens. So i have a light white dot in all my videos now. And i like to fix everything. Hope i can find a replacement lens
I wanted to purchase a hero 5 session but it's external mic adapter dongle thing is super expensive. After watching this video, I hope to be able to add an external mic jack to the camera once I get it. I have added an external mic jack to my SJ4000 and hopefully I will be able to do the same with this camera.
Great video, helps a lot. My Gopro session4 become the purple screen, do you think it's caused by the loose ribbon? Maybe I will tear it down, since it already became a useless brick..
It's wild the s.it you saw had it x rayed haha.. randomly came across this looking for go pro solutions.. and to see that you fly is awesome.
I might just cry... I spent a good 10 minutes trying to pause the video at the section where you take the battery out to get a glimpse of the batteries specs to replace it.... and then 1 minute later you show it nice and clearly on the screen ...
please info .. the battery is the same as GoPro Hero 5, what is different
Hi, did you find out where the wifi antenna is ? I would put a flexible antenna stick in order to power the signal! thanks
Still learning from you, even in summer of 2018. you were a wealth of knowledge and taken too soon!

Hi, I saw your video and I'm with the same problem I would like to know how you opened the gopro without having to break the plastic protection, to be able to later replace it, where you cut to take the plastic protection of the internal components
Hm..interesting! I just saw my battery from hero 6. I doubt that the model is the same? see if size could be the same?
Good Job! I was interested in buying one, but I wondered if it would be possible to change the battery of the session 5 in a way that is a little bit more comfortable . . . So my personal decision is: NoGo and not GoPro for the session 5 : )
Good information, as usual, JC.
I wonder if alcohol would help on that glue...
It's worth a try. If you could save the rubber around the housing then that would be great. But also that rubber is only held on with glue so it's going to be tricky.
Trust me, it won't help at all. In fact, after using up almost half a bottle, you'll probably end up like me on my similar projects, get frustrated, break the item you're fixing, and then finish off the other half of the bottle, all the while grumbling about the engineers who designed the item you're fixing or glaring at your inadequate tools. :)
you're a legend! I just smashed my inner lense and thought it was all done for. Going to give it a go:)
Did you find inner lense for repair? I broken mine and I'm not able to find new online.. :/
@ ever find a lens?
@@hifideluxe6350 No. Buyed another S5 (water damage) and used it's lense. :(
Thanks for sharing this one bro. For the size of the screw (track 2:37), it's actually a "T4 Torx", exactly the same screw heads as the Apple iPhone 5.
Is it water proof after putting it back together? Do you recommend a bead of silicone or something?
Does anyone know the type of battery that is in the Session 5, manufacture number, size etc? I need to replace it in mine and is looking for a replacement.
Hi, you have opened your camera. Did you find a way to get video out via USB-C? Greatings Dom
Still helping me on 2/21/2020 man...Rest in peace brother....
I have a go pro hero 5 session and by accident I poured cold water in to the charging input so is the battery fuckt or is it the whole thing.
did you replace the battery?
Hey, awesome video.
Just one question in mind - is your GoPro still waterlroof after all that?
Yes i wandering the semthing
Thank you! - It is great to enjoy the gift of technology and UA-cam
I need to remove the IR-filter so I can record at night with a IR-flashlight. Could you make a tutorial on how to do that?
Thank you for this video, it helped my session 5 to record some more great videos.
My problem was that the session was not powering or charging after a heavy fpv crash , like he explains, we have to press the junction of the ribbon cables, i wouldn't do a good job oppening the case without screwing up, so i took a pliers and pressed with it in the zones where the ribbons are, and after some tries i managed to have the led charging on again.
Thank you man and rest in peace.
mine was same, cant charge and the LED is not showing charge, which part do you press sir?
hope you can reply me, really need to solve this problem without open the case
@@muhammadhazriq2259 I pressed real hard on bottom right of the session. hope that will work for you.
@@bigbosspt can you tell me more about where to press? I didnt get it.
@@kamitfuzo you have to press really hard on the bottom right of the GoPro with the charging cable conected until you see the red light indicatting that is indeed charging. Hope it helps
Missing You(r) Videos waaaaaaay too much JC 😢 RIP
Ooh this is really handy! Maybe post a guide on ifixit to correct that noob that couldn't figure it out. Have you found any spare parts anywhere?
I want to but since I've already done it it's too late. But I have another and if it ever breaks then I'll do a full video from start to finish. Havent looked for parts but I'm pretty sure the lenses are on Amazon. Not sure about the battery but even if one isn't available any 1s battery will work as long as it fits.
i ran over my session on my skateboard today and it now has a dent in the back plate which left a hairline crack between the camera and the back plate? is this gonna make it non waterproof? should I fill it with super glue? PLEASE HELP ME MY GOPRO MEANS EVERYTHING TO ME
Anyone know where I can get a battery replacement from please?
Where do you get the replacement parts ????
great vid man👍🏻 interesting hobby taking stuff apart. i recently lost my 4.. going to get a 5😁
I did it with a creme brulee burner (torch lighter). I did not burn the rubber and the door could stay attached. Thanks a lot for your videos rest in peace.
so this is what happened the black part on the gopro has a deep line it still works underwater even I wonder if you can fix it like take it off and fix it pls help
Mine just stopped taking a charge... I had it charged up and ready to go, put it away and then brought it out to use and it won't hold a charge. Works fine plugged in. I'm wondering if it's worth it to me to take it apart because every time I use it I have to hook up with external power supply anyway, so... I'm risking ruining a working camera to just have minimal free time with battery power??? What I'm basically asking is, knowing how short battery life is on Go Pro's, needing to plug in anyway, should I risk disassembling it just to get some unconnected time??? Opinions anyone???
Another way to heat it up is if you have a 3d printer use the heated bed. That how I replace phone screens and stuff. I used to use heat guns but then I was looking at my printer and a light bulb came on and I had an idea and been using it that way.
I can't stop laughing at you chucking a gopro on the ground to "Fix" it.
I completely ran out of ideas lol. BTW great videos lately, I've been enjoying them.
where can I buy a battery replacement ? Thanks
Man.. this video is worth in gold! well done.
Can I buy and replace a 5-session battery separately?
If possible, please let me know where you bought your battery.
Same here , got a old hero 4 session and the battery is really bad , need to fix it , i didn't find anything about the replacement battery :/ Let me know
@@atnosfpv9749 you could buy a session for parts or repair on ebay. Ive seen them go for 60 bucks.
Thank you! I've seen the same guide and it's been a deterrent from me getting one of these. Like you, I generally fix things myself. I buy broken things for dirt cheap and fix them. Looks like I CAN finally take the leap with one of these.
David Waltermyer has a video on Go Pro Session 4 disassembly. Just in case you don't get it in your search results.
How to raplace the internal lens? Do you know any tutorial? Tx
So how the hell do you remove the battery? Do you just unattach it or have to Sauder it off? Help anyone
Thats one way to ruin a session(cosmetically) I recently had a crash and broke my front glass cover thingy but unfortunately my lens is now slightly out of focus. Any tips on how i could re adjust it without opening it up? fingers do not work :(
maybe when the battery goes bad you can do a video on switching out the battery with a step down and run it off the flight battery.
Yea that seems totally do-able. Should be able to splice the wires into a USB connector because out of curiosity I did plug in the USB with the battery off and it does power up.
Fantastic, that was my concern the battery on the session 5 , 300 hundred dollars for a camera that can be trash if battery goes caput.
battery that does not seem to be up to the job - comparing to a Nikon DSLR battery or Lumix GF2 battery - still going strong after much more use - and these are removable batteries which can be easily replaced. Looks like Gopro dropped the ball here...
@@tomparizek1003 That honestly might be one of the reasons why they no longer make the Session.
That's what brought me here. Owned my GPS5 since June 2017 and over the past few months, battery life has become non-existent. Contacted GP directly, no luck. Can't service, can't replace/refurbish. Only option is to find a deal on eBay or cough up the dough for a Hero 7.
As many have said, helping out years after your death, a true legand. RIP and thanks again.
Maybe take AVE's advise and keep it in a vise. i.e. use a vise to squeeze and break the glued/welded joint. Works on laptop batteries too.
And still learning from this man.
If we could find out what type of plastic it is you could likely guess what type of glue they used to glue it. Then instead of using a soldering iron to heat it use some solvent that would loosen the glue.
Hello,WHere can I buy gopro session 5 battery?
Amazon. Walmart.
There don't seem to be any for the Session - all the batteries I've seen are for the Hero 5 / 6. The session battery has a cable connection which needs soldering onto the camera PCB, by the looks of it. Even fleabay came up empty. Sadly it seems that the only realistic alternative is to buy that external battery and case, which makes is more than double its size, or to use a 90 degree USB-C cable and a USB power bank of some sort (no longer water proof). I love the form factor of the session, but can't quite believe how awful the built in battery pack is. I've put 600+ cycles through my phone battery and it still holds about 80% charge - my 1 year old session has had maybe 50 cycles and is always recharged after use (so not left discharged for long periods) and can barely do 90 minutes (used to be able to get nearly 3 hours when new). All settings are the same and wifi off.
Place the GoPro Sessions on its back on a chunk of dry ice to freeze dry the glue that holds the cover on. For faster results submerge camera in liquid nitrogen. Camera just slides right out of its case.
Do you have any idea where i get new inner lens? I have two sessions that has inner lens broken:D
I'm pretty sure it's the same as the other GoPro lenses. The plastic housing around the lens might be slightly different. But you can get GoPro lenses off Amazon and Banggood from $8-12 and just reuse the plastic housing around it. In fact I've been using GoPro lenses on my FPV cameras too.
Hey, do you know what could be the problem if the go pro wont charge but it does turn on?
also how did you remove the micro sd door?
wow great video! but i think u need to avoid ponds from now on because i think that thing isn't waterproof anymore ;)
It probably isn't, but you can get a Scuba Housing for it now. It will hold up for higher pressure on deeper dives and remain dry. Amazon has them around $30, but b warned they are lesser quality and scratch up easier.
I overheated my GoPro hero 4 session and it did not turn on or charge after it overheated so .
Man how do you learn to fly through those trees, really amazing.
If I would have to try I'd need to get a container full of quads or a decent chainsaw.
What would some of us do if we disnt have you.. thanks man.
You sir are a legend !
Hi, thanks a lot for your video. I did not have solder revoking gun and used iron for heating aluminum peace. It is helped to open it )
He won't answer, died in motorcycle crash about year ago, rip bro
Couldn't you have used an exacto knife and slip it in between the aluminum face and the rest of the case and work your way around it cutting the glue bond?
It's not just glue. It's as if they heat treated the plastic and it's bound to the aluminum. I think thats why the only way I could get it off was by applying a lot of heat to soften the plastic.
Awesome work, very helpful. thanks
He won't answer, died in motorcycle crash about year ago, rip bro
JC you just un-R.I.P.-ed your Session.walkig zombie, no, flying zombie camera lol. Btw, nice job!
Thanks for the video. I'm not a fan of Go-Pro, mainly because they come across as being too Apple-like. But anyway thanks for confirming my suspicions. ☺
Incidentally I would have put a *small* amount of glue on those ribbon connectors, just in case they came loose again.
That was extremely helpful, thanks!
I miss ya brother. Rip..! 🙏🏻
Nice one mate, great video. Cheers
Great info as usual!👍🏻😃😃👍👏🥇
i have a gopro session 5 - had it for a good 3 years. I was using while in the ocean (snorkelling). All sudden it made these beeping noises like it ran out of battery, when i come back to land and it continued to beep - very odd unusual noises. Got home and left it on charge for 14 hours, once i grabbed the go pro on charge it was extremely hot. So i quickly put it in front of the fan to cool it down. Now:
- when its on charge it will get hot straight way - there no lights to say it charging
- doesn't turn on - tried holding big red button down for 10 sec and nothing happens
- i roughly took my go pro down 5 - 6 meters deep.
I believe its a battery issue - anyone have any solutions? or know whats wrong?
Check you charger. I accidently used a Android rig and it began to boil to the point I thought my SD melted. Now, I like to charge it off my laptop USB connected to the original cable.
Not being an expert, I'd be more inclined to send it in to GOPro to have a new battery installed..Unless it costs less to buy a new one, sadly that's the state of technology we live in no
Awesome video man thanks!!!
I currently have a Session that has the EXACT same symptoms. After a crash it just won't power up. No external physical damage at all. Just dead. Why the hell didn't GoPro just use fasteners to hold the cube onto the lens face? Well thanks for the how-to. I actually have a hot air soldering station at work. Maybe I will give it a go... Thanks!
Yep sounds like you just have a loose ribbon. I think it's so hard to get into because they made these waterproof. I wish they made one that wasn't. Would make like easier for us RC guys.
Thank you Sir RIP ❤😞
Wonder if that glue would've dissolved in acetone and leave the rubber intact? Cant wait to break mine. lol
Thx for the information
Seems like using the info in this video you could cut a small port right at the battery terminal and patch in an external battery, maybe stuck to the back camera surface. Or if you cut a port large enough by the battery you could make it removable by just unsoldering the wires. You could cover the port with a good piece of tape, though water resistance would probably only now be 'splash resistant'. Mine isn't bad enough to go there yet. Sad if these all go by the wayside. Fits nice under my motorcycle helmet visor, where it doesn't obstruct my vision and is protected from slashing tree branches. If anything killed this product it's the non-replaceable battery. Thanks Man
