I watched your channel when I was studying Russian in 2020. I switched to Ukrainian in 2021. It was tough because there were no much channels like this. I'm glad that you decided to teach Ukrainian now. It makes me happy how Ukrainians are speaking Ukrainian again. It makes me feel special because I chose to learn this language. Hands down the best introduction to the Ukrainian alphabet I've seen for English speakers. I'm still struggling hard with putting sounds to symbols, but this video makes me feel like I at least have a chance lol. Thank you!
Thank you Nika, this is very helpful. I'm American and teach English online to a Ukrainian student and thought I would like to learn Ukrainian in turn, as I plan to travel there after the war. Because my grandparents spoke Slovak in the home, I develped an ear for Slavic pronounciation and some basic vocabulary as a child many, many years ago. I'm making good progress for now through listening, but I know that as soon as I'm able to read my learning will accelerate. Your technique for teaching reading is excellent and the organization and pacing is very well-done. Likewise with your examples of pronounciation. Looking forward to more of your videos in the future, and I'm so glad you've found a way to continue teaching us.
I'm glad that you are giving Ukrainian lessons now. Actually I commented weeks ago that after some years learning Russian I decided to change into Ukrainian, even before the war started, for quite a number of reasons. It is not easy to find good teachers of Ukrainian here in youtube, so your decision to teach Ukrainian is good news!

Thank you for your effort, I decided to lern Ukrainian I dont know why somthing insid me guide to started to lern this languag and I searched for some body help me and then I found your Chanel, that's whay I am greatful.
This is the first video of yours that I've watched. The UA-cam algorithm finally recommended this. to me.I watched, clicked Like and Subscribed right away. I had learned a few Ukrainian words in the last year and a half but I hadn't really studied your language. I had printed the Ukrainian Cyrillic alphabet but I had not learned the sounds. I had started picking up some of them just from seeing them and using Google Translate. But this video was like unlocking the door for me.I thank you! I then checked out your channel. The next video I watched was "STAND WITH UKRAINE! My country is on fire." As an American from Texas, I've been outraged since 24 Feb, 2022. I cannot imagine what you've been through in that time. I've been following the WAR closely and every day I watch 10-15 Ukraine focused videos. And for most I spend more time reading comments, replying to some and making a few comments myself. I learn a lot in the comment sections from a large international community. I look forward to learning your language. I appreciate the way you have your playlists organized. I look forward to watching and listening to more of your videos. You're fantastic!
Thank you so much for your support of Ukraine, our language and my channel. I really appreciate it. I hope my videos will help you to progress fast. If you have any questions, please feel free to contact me via email info@verba.school
At first, I skipped over this video back in 2022. But as we get closer to 2024, I decided I must see it to the end. To my surprise, I found some very useful sentences at the ending. Thank you Nika.
Дуже дякую за вiдео! In future could you do a lesson explaining ю and я? I know they are pronounced as [yu] and [ya], but do they soften the preceding consonant (in гуляти, for example)? I also have a question about ь: Is льон pronounced as [soft-L ON] or [softL YON]?
Thank you! Great questions! Yes, these letters do soften the previous consonant, f. e. In the words гуЛЯти або ЛЬОн Л becomes soft. But what is interesting, that not all the Ukrainian consonants have a soft pair, some of them just become a bit softer but the sounds remains hard. I think I will layer make a video about this.
Hi Nika! I just finished my first class of Ukrainian and I loved it. I still make errors with г and ґ pronunciation and the O accent , but I will correct them with practice.. and remembering that Spanish "O" sounds also "O" independent of place in the word like you showed in the video for Ukrainian "O" I believe You're the only person one can enjoy looking at practicing pronunciation of letters!!. I will be waiting for Ukrainian lesson 2. Bye!
Wow Nika, this is fantastic!! l've always said that languages open a door to another world, and you made me interested in your native language as well!! there are a few striking differences with Russian alfabet, what I learned today from the first watch (I plan to watch it again and again later): the reduction for e and o is not present (that makes pronunciation easier I think), there's no hard sign ъ but instead an apostrophe that makes the same function, the sound of ukrainian и is kind of similar to the russian ы, right? the ukrainian г sounds different from russian г and there's a letter that is pronounced exactly like the russian г (don't have the keyword set to ukrainian language) and is written similar, the ukrainian i which is pronounced as russian и ... what else?? need to rewatch again!! Hope you keep on going, a big hug from Venezuela!!
Hi Mara! Amazing! You have been very attentive! Great job! 🔥🔥🔥 Also Ukrainian Ч is harder than the Russian one, while Ц can be both hard and soft (while Russian is always hard).
Hi Nika. Firstly, thank you for this lesson. Secondly, may I ask (possibly putting the cart before the horse and if so, sorry) is there a way of mastering the "spelling" with words containing і, ї, и and й I am a lousy speller andI seem to always use the wrong letters.
lemme watch this 3 more times before you claim i "understood" xD Thank you so much tho!!...... Day 4 of coming back and studying. im a lil slow but i can finally read a lil bit. I try and practice whenever i can find free time. and i feel like its slowly paying off :D... day 7. i finally understand all the sounds of the alphabet and rarely have to pull up a cheat sheet to sound out basic words
Thank you for the video, it really helps with understanding pronunciation. As a native English speaker, I struggle with the sound lyu. So instead I just say lu. Will people still understand me?
Excellent video. You give us small enough chunks that we can easily memorize while the video is playing or after stopping it unlike some videos. /Відмінне відео. Ви даєте нам досить маленькі шматки, які ми можемо легко запам'ятати під час відтворення відео або після його зупинки, на відміну від деяких відео.
according to my ukrainian grammar book, the letter “ґ” was banned by the ussr, so ukrainian people had to use “г” for both g/h sounds. it’s quite disturbing to learn these facts to be honest, but makes me even more motivated to learn ukrainian. this was such a nice lesson. thank you so much. 💙💛
That is true, and it was returned only in 90-s after the formation of independency. The Ukrainian language had a huge influence by the Russian language, or even worse, many times was banned and considered as so called "small russian language". That is the reason why there are so many russian speaking people in Ukraine, because russian was imposed here for many generations.
Besides, a lot of Russian words were put in Ukrainian. Some of them are used even now such as лимон or апельсин, however Ukrainian is цитрина, помаранча
@@ЄвгенійПанасенко-н2к These two words have not russian roots, апельсин - китайське яблуко з французької, лимон також з грецької чи італійської. But you are absolutely right, there are a lot of words in Ukrainian that appeared because of russiafication of Ukraine.
@@VERBA_SCHOOL Yes, but цитрина і помаранча were excluded. Only лимон і апельсин were allowed to use. Thanks God, now цитрина і помаранча are used more and more

И is so confusing to me. The IPA given here is [ɪ] but the pronunciation I hear is closer /ɨ/. Is this subject to regional variations? [ɪ] seems to be further back in the mouth in Ukrainian.
@@VERBA_SCHOOL Thank you so much , I have just watched the new video and I could see the diference. They are quite similiar, the position of the tongue is the same.

И was so difficult for me to understand! But with in 3 seconds with your explanation now I can make the sound!!! Дякую !!!!! 🇦🇷
Good lesson, it's always good to know one more variant of the Slavic languages.
Thank you, dear Anh! 🤗💙
Great explanation, thanks
Дякую for the amazing lesson 😁😁😁
Будь ласка! 🤗
Дякую за коментар! 😉
Thank you, this was very helpful to me. Much practice needed but far better than the app I was using. From an Australian who cares deeply 🇦🇺❤️🇺🇦
Thank you, Anthony 🙏🤗
Beautiful language!❤💎🇺🇦
❤️❤️❤️
Muito obrigado por compartilhar a cultura ucraniana conosco!
Excellent, дякую
Very good очен хорошо большое спасибо Nika
Thank you, Salvador! 💙💛
Чудово! Молодець!
Щиро дякую 💙💛
Hi Nika!
I just finished my first class of Ukrainian and I loved it. I still make errors with г and ґ pronunciation and the O accent , but I will correct them with practice.. and remembering that Spanish "O" sounds also "O" independent of place in the word like you showed in the video for Ukrainian "O"
I believe You're the only person one can enjoy looking at practicing pronunciation of letters!!.
I will be waiting for Ukrainian lesson 2.
Bye!
Thank you, Yesid! 💙💛
Yes, just a bit of practice and you will get used to it 🤗
Omg you are really good. These videos are gold.
Thanks a lot 😊
Great job! 🔥🔥🔥
Also Ukrainian Ч is harder than the Russian one, while Ц can be both hard and soft (while Russian is always hard).
I like this channel. Just discovered it.
Did you ever make that video about rolled r? If not, I personally would love that
Hi Nika. Firstly, thank you for this lesson. Secondly, may I ask (possibly putting the cart before the horse and if so, sorry) is there a way of mastering the "spelling" with words containing і, ї, и and й I am a lousy speller andI seem to always use the wrong letters.
Great job!
Thanks, Gregory! 🤗
lemme watch this 3 more times before you claim i "understood" xD Thank you so much tho!!......
Wow. Fonally I`ve found a good video for the alphabet explanation. I teach the same way but I didn`t think about КОМЕТА І :)
❤️
Дякую! 🇺🇦💙💛
Клёво!
Удачі Ніка 👍😃
Дуже дякую 🙏
Some letters are based on greek alphabet:
Δ - Д
λ - Л
π - П
φ - Ф
ς - с
ρ - Р
γ - Г
etc.
Absolutely right 👍
Thank you for the video, it really helps with understanding pronunciation. As a native English speaker, I struggle with the sound lyu. So instead I just say lu. Will people still understand me?
Soft syllables often are challenging for Pronunciation, but please don't worry, everyone will understand you and it is absolutely not a big deal🤗💙💛

Thank for these charming videos. I look forward to being able to understand a little of the news from Ukraine in the original.
Thanks God, now цитрина і помаранча are used more and more
@@ЄвгенійПанасенко-н2к 🤗
Hello, thanks for the great work, Im changing from Russian to Ukrainian language and I'm so interested and your videos are so helpful, where can I contact you about your courses or slides?
Slides are available for my Patrons (all levels) in Patreon posts) Courses are in the process, you can check our website verba.school/
Oh, cool!
Most wanted language to know 🥺😭🇺🇦💙💛
И is so confusing to me. The IPA given here is [ɪ] but the pronunciation I hear is closer /ɨ/. Is this subject to regional variations? [ɪ] seems to be further back in the mouth in Ukrainian.
Maybe is good ideia to record a video stressing the diference between г and х. I am confused about that.
I have it in my plan 🤗
@@VERBA_SCHOOL Thank you so much , I have just watched the new video and I could see the diference. They are quite similiar, the position of the tongue is the same.
5:19 ))))))))
I've got a question. I only have B1 level in Russian. Are the grammatical genders of Ukranian substantives the same as in Russian?
I guess they are the same.
There are some differences, you can check the 4th lesson in this playlist for more details 😊
