Tape to stop moisture, twigs, soil getting in barrel, you often slip over and we walk and push through so much scrub for hours on end, so the barrel definitely gets rubbish in it if not covered. The tape blows off before the bullet reaches it and tests have been done to show trajectory is unaffected. Some people like silencers or suppressors some don't. I don't like the extra length when scrub bashing plus I am a cheap bastard ha ha. I only intend to shoot one animal on a hunt so I don't care about the noise scaring the others. When culling females they are useful though. This is public land, hunting is free, so the cost is just the helicopter drop off. However there are plenty of places that you can walk in for tahr so it just costs your own sweat.
Do some research before you type, the New Zealand Government considers all of these beautiful animals as pests, they cull them and poison them for population control. The hunters have more respect for the animals than the government. At my home I have my own small farm, we grow our own vegetables and berries and also have sheep that we eat. Regarding natural predators, like I said please take the time to research New Zealand's natural history and while you are there check out 1080 poison it is what the New Zealand government used to kill animals, then ponder which is a better end to life, a bullet or a slow painful toxic death. I know all of these problems have been caused by human interference with nature in the first place, but that was not my wrong doing. Besides it is very arrogant to think that humans are above being part of a natural food chain, when you spend a lot of time in the forest and mountains you realize how far urbanization has driven us from this reality. I'm not trying to justify why I would farm or hunt animals or catch fish, I don't really give it much more thought than why I grow potatoes in the garden, its just how I grew up. The vegan thing is something I'd never heard of until very recent years, I don't think we had enough different nuts and fruits and soy products in New Zealand to actually sustain that type of diet until the massive freighting importing industries got going and burning the fuel to get these type of goods into our country. Very recently I have actually met some young people from overseas that have come to work and holiday in New Zealand and they were vegan and I ended up taking one out hunting and when the saw the truth and felt the nature of the hunt, they then chose to eat wild meat, they'd just had there heads so filled with factory farming and cruelty images they didn't realize other methods existed.

Thats why if or when a apocalypse happens you new school young folks and city folks are gonna panic and die fast! While me and my fellow country people will be living off the land and surviving.
