I made the deal with the girlfriend at a price and when I went to pick up the car, the boyfriend suddenly showed up and renegotiated the price. In the end, the final price was still well under market at the time, so paying an additional $400 wasn't the end of the world. In this situation, I would see how it plays out and then countersue them for legal fees.

Suggestion on the lights. Do a retro fit. 3 different types of color spectrum. Daylight, cool light, natural light. All individually controlled! Able to tune light reflection... its a a game changer..

I believe this is small claims court territory. Some states don't even allow lawyer representation in small claims court. You got scammed by the husband, even had the cop verify that. Then you had to make a new deal and pay again to the wife, which you have on video, money changed hands and she accepted it, Paid in Full per the agreement you had with her. The kid cannot come back and say you owe more. Deal is done, signed sealed and delivered. They should be thankful they got anything for it. That place looked like it was getting ready to be bulldozed. Cut all ties to them. You will not hear from them again. The retainer for a lawyer will probably cost you what you would pay for new lights alone.

If you can settle out of court with no lawyers for a couple hundred bucks and get it in writing that they agree to not press charges. That would be your best bet. Going to court costs everyone money. Anyone who has had to do it knows. Most have not had to go to court and just think it’s straightforward, it is the opposite of that.
You have nothing to worry about. The deal was agreed on and shaking of the hands is a legal agreement by law. Plus with the police present you have a witness of a legal transaction. you can get roll /spray on paint booth coating that you can peel off when it gets extremely dirty on the inside...so your nice paint job wont be destroyed... just saying..

Wow, they don’t a chance at taking legal action against you. A deal is deal, cash exchanged hands and that’s it. Any lawyer who’s takes up there case is a grafter knowing they’ll get paid anyway, this is so open and shut though I reckon you would get a preliminary judgement that this has no chance at trial. Sometimes we all just need to stand up for ourselves and not be taken for a fool.
