I built the X version with the upgraded crossovers and love them. Previously I had several pairs of $500 - $800 speakers (Klipsch, Elac, JBL) and was gradually upgrading the front end. Better pre-amp, not much difference. Better amp, not much difference. Better DAC, not much difference. Then I added these to the system and holy moly, THAT'S what everyone was talking about! Putting together a second setup downstairs and might go with the regular TD version to save a few bucks. I spent way more than $30 on wood clamps - that was a serious hidden cost, nice job pointing that stuff out. Great vid as always.

I built the 1TDX with upgraded crossovers and have them paired with a Vincent SV700 hybrid integrated. The amp will put out 50 watts in class A. It's a great pairing and gives me chills every time I listen. The woofer on these speakers is something really special and will shock you with not only quality of bass but how low it can go.

Great video on a fantastic speaker. The more who know about this kit the better. I built my 1TDX with the upgraded crossover and they sound better than my Wharfedale Lintons. As you have found, built correctly, these Criton are superior to most speakers under $3k. Not to mention, the satisfaction of building something that is unique to your own specific taste can be very rewarding. I power mine with the Yamaha A-S801, which with the Yamaha’s clarity and neutrality, compliment the Critons quite well. Keep the videos coming!

I built a pair for my daughter for Christmas. 1TDX with upgraded crossovers. And I paid a friend who is a professional woodworker to veneer them, which cost more than expected. Total ran a bit over $2k, but I was all in on giving her an excellent speaker, built by her dad as something to keep from now on. I haven’t listened to these without the upgrades so I can’t say if it’s worth the difference. I can say that this is the best small to mid-sized speaker I’ve ever heard. Bass extension is amazing for the size. Mid range is realistic, warm, and musical. Tweeters are great as far as I can tell (and as I’ve been told), but I’m older so my hearing only works to around 10khz. For $2k you might be able to buy something comparable, but not decidedly better (opinion, obviously).
If you’re not set up with a wood shop, or have someone who will do it cheap or for free, I suggest a prefinished veneer-like covering that you can apply yourself. I spent way too much on that part. Ratcheting tie-down straps will work as well as clamps. Ask for extra foam when you order- I had to improvise.
    Daughter loves them btw.

I built three sets including X. They are excellent speakers and if you are good at making things you are going to be rewarded with great sound but know your limits. You can screw these up if you are not good making things You can get cheap clamps and tools at Harbor freight. UA-cam videos tell you how to veneer wood. I had never done veneer and did a good job watching videos. Do not use self adhesive veneer. Use the method of ironing on the veneer with wood glue. Easier is to use a good sealing and fill primer, sand everything smooth and paint them.

I bought them because I decided to go all the way for my daughter (gifted to her). I haven’t heard the standard crossover so can’t say how pronounced the difference is exactly. I’ve heard that it’s significant.

Excellent review! I bought a 1TD flat pack with the premium crossover a couple years ago. My impressions of this speaker are broadly similar to yours - superb bass extension, clean but dark treble, mid-range that's great for vocals. I think they are an unbelievable value if you are comfortable going the DIY route. I upgraded to the 1TDx and premium crossover after 6 months or so. The 1TDx is noticeably brighter in the treble but is otherwise very similar to the 1TD. The upgraded crossover didn't make much audible difference. I have them on 35 inch stands in a large complex space, 22 foot vaulted ceiling, stairway, a second floor landing, angled walls and openings into adjacent rooms. In this space these speakers need a lot of power (I'm currently using a Parasound A23+ with 160w/channel). Even so they simply can't move enough air to fill the room with bass to the level I like. I added a CSS SDX12 sub (also built from a flat-pack) which solved that problem. This sub, BTW, is an absolute beast and pairs well with the 1TDx. A couple final comments: The 1TDx needs to be out from the walls about 2 feet for the best sound stage and separation. The 1TDx sounds best to me with the speakers oriented perpendicular to the wall. Towed-in to my typical listening position, the treble can be a little harsh. There is also something odd that I've occasionally noticed. - on some music I have heard a "boxy-ness" in the mid-range that I think is probably the result of using small box speakers in a large space. I wonder if anyone else has noticed this. Overall, I highly recommend both the 1TD and the 1TDx. I'm not sure the marginal improvement of the upgraded crossover is worth the cost. CSS Audio has been great to deal with.

You mention small box speakers might be a disadvantage in a large space, so is a large speaker generally better for a big complicated space as yours? Is there a disadvantage to using a large speaker in a large room? Is cost the only issue? If both speakers are good should I get a large speaker, I have a room like yours.

I think one has to experiment a lot with placement with these. By the way, if anyone is going to buy these as a kit, they should know that it's not as easy as it seems to build them. It takes time and you have to be very careful with the crossover and it's easy to screw up.

Yes, I’ve built a few amps previously, and the crossover soldering was still a bit of a challenge. Barely had enough hookup wire. If you have no experience soldering, don’t try this unsupervised as your first adventure. Have extra wire on hand and use it liberally to make life easier. Don’t waste money on a cheap solder iron- get a decent station with heat control.

1TD-X with upgraded x-overs. The x-overs are no joke even with the fancy pre-punched board. You have to use jumpers to get the conductors to reach the next component.
On good stands they will play with my Magnepan 1.7i in my main system. I use the CSS in my bedroom and they are end-game for that room. Definitely non-fatiguing and smooth.

I'm glad you made the comment concerning the amplifiers. I drive my 1TDX speakers with a nice old Adcom GFA 545 and they sound great.
I bought the birch flat pack so staining is the additional work needed and the decision was made because I didn't want to learn how to veneer.

I do find, however, that comparing the Buchardt MKii with the TD model, was unjust. One can ask - why not comparing the TD1 to the earlier model of the Buchardt? what I am trying to say is that if a manufacturer issues a better model of the same prior model (that probably fixes some of the former weaknesses), then the proper comparison would be between the MKii and the TDX1 with the superior electronics. Hi! I own the critons, the X-version with a regular cross-over. They are so lovely and easy to listen to, never shrill or harsh up top, but plenty of detail. However, I do miss a bit of liveliness, so I am not sure these are my endgame speakers. Vocals are great on these speakers, the midrange sound natural and slightely warm, a sound I love. That also makes it great to listen to Chellos, one o my favorite instruments. However, I can't move them into my room, so they are about a foot from the walls, and I have to say, I had to plug the ports, the bass was so overwelming and clouding the midrange. Maybe this also has t do with pairing it with my Audiolab 6000A -amp that has strong bass -presence. Another thing I noticed is that the intergration between the two drivers is fantastic, I can't tell any overlap or gaps etc. They are indeed not easy to drive, I have to crank up the volume way more then my previous Wharfedale Denton 85's. One final note, I have noticed that the critons play all sort of music very well: classical music (especially chello's sound lovely), choir, film music, pop rock etc. Thats great, because I listen to so many genres! So, all in all, I am enjoying these speakers, and considering to upgrade the filter to get a wider and deeper soundstage, some more clarity and detail etc. All the best Nemo, I loved your review as always, Gerlach Sven.

the CSS speakers have a pretty high performance ceiling, you could get more out of them with more expensive amplifciation but a cheaper solution for now could be tone controls. If your amp doesn't have them maybe try something like the Schiit Loki? Since you love everything else about the speaker being able to bump the treble a bit could take them from outstanding to perfect for you :)

H! I used to have the Denton 85's, so I can only compare my tdx to those: I would say the tonality is very similar, good bass presence, good warmish mids, easy to listen high, no fatigue there, though the Denton's are slightly more energetic up top. However, the Denton's suffer from mediocre crossover parts and the drivers are somewhat inferior, so everything the Denton's do, the TDXs do better: deeper and more controlled base with heft; mid's are superb and warmish, rich, clear, texture and presence, voices are fantastic, almost lifelike; high tones are very gentle, never harsh or shrill, but enough details to keep you listening to the music. Above all, the integration of the drivers is excellent, I can't hear where the drivers crossover. Plus the TDXs show more refinement, more detail and more control. My only regret is not going for the superior Crossover, so I may do an upgrade in the future. Does this help? ATB, Gerlach Sven.

Hello, You guys have so much to say about the speakers but not one you does a video to show how they sound. It's mostly talk and talk about the speakers. There are a lot of people out there that are beginners and they will make a decision about a speaker by at least having an idea how they sound, by listening to it.

How tf are you gonna listen to the speaker through youtube? Did you hit your head or something my man? You want to listen then you have to go and physically listen somehow and if you can't then it is what it is. I'm here to help but there are limits to how much a youtuber can help you make a decision. You have unrealistic expectations of what a youtube video should be doing for you.

You really didn't need to be such an ass at the end of your review.

seems like it wasn't clear enough since your soft ass is still complaining. Man I never thought I'd see the day where we have sensitive harley davidson riders...

How would you compare the soundstage of the 1TD to the LS50?

      @NemoPropaganda  Рік тому +1

LS50 Meta is a much smaller speaker, everything stages pretty big these days but the CSS staged taller.

@@NemoPropaganda Thxs. I'm torn b/c I like so many different types of speakers (806's, 12.2's, Q350's, UB52's, UBR's) and not sure there's going to be "the one" that stands out above the rest at this point.
      How would you decide?
Is choosing to go with the value proposition of a speaker that you know has quality parts (CSS) on top of getting rave reviews, to good to pass up (but with one big drawback of not being able to test it out before purchasing)?
