This is really interesting but also kind of creepy considering how awful North Korea is. I hope she wasn't arrested or anything when the FIG found out how old she really was
Yes, indeed! I hope so as well! She just suddenly disappeared from the international stage just like that... It is such a shame that they did that considering at what a legend she could have been as an actual senior... hopefully she is leading a good life somewhere..
Hmm, I wonder about that, but it is quite possible. I think Kim did love gymnastics, but she was the only incredible hope at the time and the NK pushed her ahead of her time and ruined her brilliant future career with the falsifications...
I dont mean to be so offtopic but does any of you know a trick to get back into an Instagram account..? I somehow forgot the password. I love any tricks you can offer me
@1 This reminds me of video I have seen of North Korean 4 and 5 year olds playing guitars bigger than they are. Just goes to show you the heavy drilling that these kids go through. I
It's very sad. She was very elegant for being so young. More elegant than most of today's gymnasts. I hope she's ok wherever she is. The sport really lost a potentially great star when the FIG banned her.
If anybody EVER knocks down the privacy curtain that surrounds North Korea, I'm afraid we are ALL in for a lot of big, creepy, mysterious surprises. BTW, great video!
That time will come. No idea if any of us will still be around by then but people crave freedom. It's why the USSR fell apart. It's why over time China has had to modernize. Tyrants don't win out in the end. The Nazis could tell you that only they're gone. Something will give eventually.
I’m glad she was allowed to keep her metal. Her skills earned it. It wasn’t her fault that she was born where she was born. I’m positive it wasn’t her choice to lie about her statistics. We all know how North Korea operates.
Wow.. how interesting yet creepy.. I just looked her up and it said she didn't have teeth because they were knocked out in a training accident. You never know though. They could be lying about that just as much as they could be lying about her age. Great video, though, you did a very nice job :))
Yes, that's what they sad to, apparently, cover it up for the Olympics. You're right though, it's possible, but not likely considering everything about her says baby. I'd say she really did simply just lose her baby teeth . w . and thank you so much! ^w^
Well i think it is both. Her teeth look broken not fallen off. Plus if she had been 10 or 11 at the time it would mean she would have started at even younger and obtain gold at 9. She does look younger than 17 though she was probably 13 or 14
Precisely! Her routines, even by today's standard, are considered incredibly hard on a SENIOR level. She was incredible. Check out her connections and instant releases on bars in the beginning[if the text lets you xD]. She is one of the best bar workers for me. We rarely see such releases. Only from the Chinese sometimes. I love USA on everything else but they bore me on bars usually[I do love some though]. China shines there though xD
bela karolyi knows a lot about age falsification, besides, milk teeth fall out when children are around 5 to 7 years old and i really doubt she was that age by that time.
Female gymnasts, particularly those from the communist nations, were injected with drugs, and on a special diet, to slow development, and the onset of puberty, in hopes of prolonging the number of years they would be competitive. Possibly these drugs and diet could slow the loss of baby teeth as well. When communism fell in Eastern Europe, and the Soviet Union, it came to light, how much was being spent on sports "medicine", particularly East Germany, where a sizable portion of the annual national budget, (estimated as high as 25%), was devoted to it, the considered one of their greatest accomplishments to be an injectable performance enhancing steroid, that could not be detected by any known test, within 30 minutes of being injected. Who knows what the North Koreans were capable of, and being a less advanced nation, may have had some side effects, like not losing the front "baby teeth" until 11, or 12, maybe even later. As far as age falsification, I would put nothing past the North Koreans, or any communist nation for that matter, as they were using success at international competitions, in particular the Olympics, to showcase the benefits of the communist way of life.
5-7 is the age at which milk teeth begin falling out. The entire process of shedding baby teeth and growing in permanent teeth takes several years. If it was noticed to be far from complete it's a clear red flag that the gymnast is underage.
Bela Karolyi was Nadia Comaneci's coach in the 70s before he, his wife and Nadia herself left Romania and defected to the U.S. Romania along with the communist regimes of eastern Europe and the Soviet Union had their own bags of dirty tricks, using underage girls for competition being among them and it was all under the direction of these totalitarian governments. Coaches did as they were told just about as much as those girls, none of them really had any real say in the matter.
@@sabrinazakrowski1399I lost my front 4 teeth when I was 6 and they were all adult teeth by the time I was 7, it’s different for everyone though. My 12 year old molars also started growing in when I was 10 and they weren’t completely in until I was almost 14.
4 ft 4 in and 62 pounds is the size of my daughter who will be 9 in August. I know that elite gymnasts tend to be smaller than girls their age not in the sport but that's crazy
I don't do gymnastics, only baton twirling and in our country you can move up to the older category even if you don't reach the age limit. you just can't move down of course. Why is it such a bad thing that they made her older if her skill level was obviously in line with seniors?
I like her uniforms baton twirlers get! That's super cool! Well, the thing is, the younger gymnasts have an unfair advantage over the older ones actually because the younger you're the easier it is so there is a minimum age requirement + the other thing is that the minimum age is supposed to keep younger girls from getting injuries and such. It's just the rules . w . She ended up 4th in the Olympics on bars. Could have been 1st, but took a step on the dismount, I think. Just think about it a 11 year old who weights 30 kgs vs a 16 year old weighting 50 kgs + 11 year olds balance point hasn't shifted yet
Also, keep in mind that training for gymnastics, especially in preparation for Olympic games, is one of the most grueling things you can do to your body and mind. It's sometimes criticized to put this burden onto teens, since a lot of female gymnasts have their peak between 16 and 20, but having small children like the girl in the video pushed to this extreme is just wrong. At that age, children tend to still follow what their parents/trainer want for them, at least more so than teenagers would. You also have basically no freetime or childhood while training for the Olympics (wouldn't have been a great one anyway in NK). Some moves that are repeated a lot in gymnastics, like vaults or dismounts, also put the body under way more pressure than it is designed to withold, and long term joint problems and returning injuries can be the consequence. This is even more true for people, whose joints and bones aren't fully developed and hardened. An age limit does decrease the appeal to push an athlete hard in their childhood to have them peak early - you have to preserve their body until they're old enough to compete at an International Senior Level. And yes, body shape is important in gymnastics as well, and being flat chested and petite is just easier to achieve at 10, so without an age limit, a lot of the top gymnasts would probably be really young (and have a short career).
I don't get it though. There were other several very young gymnasts competing at Olympics and world championships as young as she was and nobody said anything. But they don't allow that anymore. That was then, this is now.
When? I don't remember such a thing. At first they were much older woman past their 20s. The lowest it ever was for gymnastics is 13, but turning 14 in the Olympic year. Kim was underage by far. She was under 11 probably , but you had to be 13/14. Now it is 16 for senior competition a.k.a Olympics, but there is junior Olympics and such . - . The reason to that is to prevent injuries by pushing younger athletes to do harder skills, but, in general, they still do it so... They'd increase the required age past 16 , but gymnasts peak at that point. Really, you don't know what's worse anymore, but 16 is decent.
Many competed underage. But sometime later they decided to raise the age of requirement to 16. But now it turns out that the grown ups are reclaiming gymnastics again as many gymnasts are extending their careers. Take Chusovitina, for example.
Yes, they did, but it was never allowed. The Asians were mostly the ones who competed underage. Also, I am glad to see that tbh! While it's cool to see the kids, well, young women that is to rock the gymnastics world they just retire immediately after. I am SO proud of Chusovitina and I love her to pieces. I hope Aly will come back once again and maybe Catalina won't retire yet..although she was going to retire for Rio already as it is...so I am not sure if we'll see her at Tokyo...
@Queen Lukasiak Asian people generally tend to be smaller, shorter, finer boned and lighter than Europeans or other races as a population. Younger gymnasts tend to be smaller, lighter, more flexible, and more easily persuaded by coaches to perform riskier skills in comparison to older ones. In female gymnastics, the smaller, lighter and more flexible you are, the greater edge you will have. That is why the communist governments, especially the Asian ones in the last couple decades, have picked small and flexible younger girls and trained them hard, and if they weren't really old enough, lie about their age. The Asian girls must have posed enough of a discrepancy in comparison to draw attention and were more likely to get caught.
She was clearly underage but i doubt 10-11. She should be 12 at least. 10 year olds cant throw a full in on the competition floor, they just dont have the muscle mass
There's a 2016 video (or at least one posted in 2016, the video itself might be older, I'm not really sure) on here somewhere where she appears as coach of the PRK team.
How could she be 15 years old for three years in a row and still allowed to compete? Shouldn't FIG have taken back all her medals from the previous year when she was "15" again for the second year?
I think she must have knocked them out during arduous, cruel training. She would have lost the teeth before the age of 10. She's very tiny - probably starved to maintain size. I taught children in grade 5 - about ten years of age. I would guess she was between 11 and 14. Think about Korbut. She looked about 12. She wasn't.
How is that possible?? All Olympics all full of frauds. A member of the world record setting Jamaican 4 by 100 track team has to give back their medals for PED’s that they won in 2008 in Beijing
No one in North Korea could come up with a temporary partial? I do wonder if bad nutrition could stunt your growth that much. The North Koreans are a couple inches shorter than the South Koreans do to poor nutrition.
Lack of proper nutrition can certainly have a negative impact on growth and development for babies, children, and teenagers. Many Asian and Cold War era Soviet and Eastern European Communist governments gave their female gymnasts drugs and specific diets to slow their growth, development, and onset of puberty to keep them in competing shape longer. Food instability is also a long standing and still ongoing national problem in North Korea. Combine these factors and it will go a long way to explain why Kim Gwang Suk was so tiny and why her teeth weren't in good condition.
They did later on, but, at the time, I guess nobody really noticed it since she was not that famous yet, was from North Korea where the point was to keep it under hush-hush and, lastly, different competitions. Also, yup, she came in 4th at the Olympics at about that age and could have been first if it wasn't for a dismount step
If they asked her, she would have told them what coaches and government officials instructed her to say. She was allowed to compete because the North Korean government falsified her papers.
Since comments are disabled on the her other balance beam video, which infringes on my Right to Free Speech, I will comment on this piece of trash video. She is one of the best gymnasts I've ever seen regardless of her age. I wouldn't be surprised if she hasn't performed other services for her nation that have kept her out of the public eye. There is nothing creepy about her performances and she is an excellent athlete.
Her performance and excellence in the sport is not what was ever controversial about her. It's about the North Korean government falsifying her documents, making her out to be older than she really was, so that she would be allowed entry into senior level elite competitions she was not actually old enough for. They were eventually caught, and it got found out that she had been competing underage. That's what got her and the North Korean team penalized and/or banned. I know right! Her form and beauty is gorgeous :( .. They shouldn't have pushed her ahead of time, she'd have DOMINATED junior competitions...
Sally Daniel yes she was better than most today. It shows lifting the age of gymnastics to 18yrs has damaged the sport. Most are ready way younger
elena Sal it protects CHILDREN from being pushed too hard. Let’s open up factories for child labor again. Sheesh.

Since when have the Olympics not been crooked? With athletes from some countries, they have always looked the other way.
it will never reaches to that girl so sad for that girl a very small nukee needed for NK so rest whole the country get freedom from KIM IL Regiem
