They weren't even allowed to smile or laugh ! and if they took their "ghomta"(ghungat) off ,they might even be subjected to social boycott or even killings! The reason we see most women activists coming from Bengal is because the social conditions of women were worst in Bengal and still the conditions have not really changed that much ! Still now in Bengali marriages have a tradition of husbands promising to " take the responsibility of the food and cloth of the women " ... You still say that Bengal is a women empowered state? I personally know a few families who had a single girl child and didn't even go for a second child citing the reason that they wanted a girl only.
