BTW, I noticed that you did not ground the spark plug when you were checking for spark. Without a path to ground, there will be no spark even with a good ignition module and spark plug. in a darkened room, touch the spark plug to any metal part of the saw, like the cylinder head, and then pull the cord to check for spark.
spark gap of .025 in open air is not the same spark required for compression, which is much higher. a 1/4 inch /6mm gap is necessary for higher compression.
I have found these homelite 42 cc saws r actually good saws except for the av spring setup that keeps it from starting. No start=no run but can be remedied. see my note below.thanks.
It was a good attempt. You live and you learn. I've fixed a few of these myself and some I was not able to get going. Ended up doing full disassembly on them instead and used for parts.
I'm having trouble w/ a small Homelite chainsaw. Starts easy, but only runs on full choke & barely cracked open choke. Fixed a few things: new primer bulb, cleaned spark arrester, checked carb; its clean, blew out fuel filter w/ compressed air; same crap. Any ideas? Thanks
u have fuel starvation on hi circuit. causes= air leak on inlet line ,usually at tank r def.fuel pump in carb. plugged hi circuit or maladjusted hi jet screw. hi speed ck valve def. cured by new carb sometimes.
To diagnose a chainsaw that does not start, first check for compression. Here is a link to a technician who is an expert at repairing chainsaws: ua-cam.com/video/KR79yTl4XhY/v-deo.html
Dustin. I found a website that has an owners manual for my Homelite XL. Go to: issuu.com & enter your model number there. If you can't find yours there, search for Homelite XL and go through the 3 manuals that are there because I came across a section that gives has a troubleshooting section for "Engine Starts & Runs But Dies Out While Cutting" & "Engine Fails to Start or Starts with Difficulty". Maybe it can help you.....Thanks for your video.
I found on this model 35&42 cc w good comp. the snap action of the av springs actually turns the on/off sw. to off on crank. also on some carbs turns choke from full to off which u need to start cold/cool/ replace sw w trimmer always on/ push off sw or turn existing sw around for snap action to turn on. clothespin on choke lever to hold closed on crank & remove fast after start,
Not a waste of time. He talks about his troubleshooting and explains why he thinks it'll solve the problem. It's real life problem solving. Don't be upset he didn't resolve it.

Why does the title say solved if you never solved the problem? Did you ever ground the spark plug and then check for spark?
My old homelite 330 was grounding out. Been banging my head against the wall troubleshooting.
I have a homelite trimmer . Its a piece of crap . But it has interchangeable parts with the ryobi trimmer .
No. I was not able to able to fix it. This was more trial and error in the end.
