    That was a great tour. I was a young Russian fella workin in an all Irish construction crew in New York back in the 90s. Got along great and made a few good friends that I won't ever forget. They were a tight bunch - all from Donnegal and so I had a good liking for Ireland and its culture ever since.

    Hi Clare! This is a timely video. I just went to an Easter 1916 commemoration mass in Newark, NJ. My parents were from Ireland and they took the whole family to this mass since before I was born. We march a couple of blocks from Military Park to St. Patrick’s Pro-Cathedral with a band of bagpipers and drummers leading the way. Along with the band is a Celtic cross with all of the heroes of the Rising printed on it. It is an annual tradition. I have to say though that a lot of the old Irish guard has passed away. The group is much smaller these days and a lot of the precision from years past has faded away. After mass we (and most of the congregation) walk to McGovern’s Pub - the bar where my parents met in the ‘60s.

    • @silverkitty2503
      @silverkitty2503 Рік тому

      @@paulmcgrath6118 there are reasons for that though its not laziness the easter rising was a failed rising it got a lot of people killed the war of independence isn't really celebrated because devalera wanted to be remembered as one of the original 1916 leaders ..also it became known among many as the time ireland was partitioned etc and the start of the troubles and amongst the unionists it caused strife ...so i guess it became controversial to many here with many having mixed feelings.

      @@silverkitty2503 dev hasn’t been around for a long time , there’s just too many armchair republicans. I’ve been going to the commemorations for years and the numbers are ridiculously small. Except for 2016 of course when everyone jumped on the bandwagon.

    • @silverkitty2503
      @silverkitty2503 Рік тому

      @@paulmcgrath6118 But why shouldn't they be small? ? It isnt really anything to do with independence it was just a failed rebellion... that killed a lot of people and the war of independence wasn't until 1919 and only ended in 1921? Surely THAT is more important? I never got the whole 1916 fuss? It was a total failure?

    I would "insist" that any visitors to Dublin do this tour, it should be made obligatory in my view, not only is it educational but hilariously entertaining as well. Being English, I've been on it at least 12 times over the years and it literally changed my life for the better. I haven't seen Lorcan for a few years now but I thank him everyday for inspiring me to study Irish History. God bless you Lorcan.

    I read a bit about the 1916 rebellion years ago and thought that it was a cluster-f operation. But thanks to Lorcan Collins I now know to "...not overanlyze it too militarily." And "to come at this with the heart as opposed to the head to see where the victoryy is. Because you don't always have to be the winner to be the victor." THAT REALLY KNOCKED MY SOCKS OFF! Thank you Mr. Collins. And thank you Ms. Clare for the setting me straight.

    Thank you for introducing us to Mr. Lorcan Collins. (As an aside, I love the name Lorcan -- that's Peter O'Toole's son's name.) Americans have this idea of the Irish being conservative, mostly because of your Catholicism. But in some ways, you're more progressive and revolutionary than we are. It's very inspiring to hear your people's stories, and I hope that the will of the people will eventually prevail as well in my country.

    As my maternal family is from Belfast, I really need to research more Irish history. My grandparents came over separately and met in NY, though their families knew one another in Ireland. As I've been told my grandmother and two of her sisters came to the USA because as Protestants they couldn't get jobs at home. Apparently Grandpa's family was "asked" to emigrate, also Protestant. Of the combined 20 siblings between them only the youngest is left. My Great Aunt El is 90. She has the best stories ❤ My paternal relatives are Hungarian Catholics who fled the Iron Curtain. Off to another rabbit hole! Ty Clare ❤

    I always like hearing how other people talk about the Rising. I took a university class in 2016 exclusively about this event, what lead up to it and the after. We spent spring break that year in and around Dublin since it was the centennial. Every day we would spend time at at least one of the sites, GPO, Four Courts, etc. Thanks for doing this video and helping spread awareness into a piece of history not often taught!
