Timber framing has been a bit of a recent obsession of mine. It's like taking furniture joinery and putting it on an extremely large scale to create the Lincoln Log buildings of your dreams. As I've been using Japanese Timber Frame joinery in my furniture I felt it was ripe time to try some proper timber frame joinery even in a western application. Enter the Blackthorn Timber In for 2021. Apparently about a year ago, Justin Dietrich, @jimmydiresta, Austin Handel, and a few other folks conceived the idea to erect a timber frame structure on the Blackthorne property in conjunction with The Makers Camp. After some deliberation, they opted to spend a weekend instructing on it, cutting joinery, and doing dry fits, to ultimately erect the structure in October at The Makers Camp event. This was sort of a last minute call for me but it made since to join the Blackthorne Timber - In 2021 even if last minute to be able to learn about building a timber frame pavilion and rub elbows with my buddy Justin, Jimmy Diresta, and meet a ton of awesome makers and creatives. This video serves two fold, as a memory for those who attended but also as a referential introductory for those looking to get into timber framing who are wanting to learn the basics of laying out certain components, using a chain mortiser, chisel sharpening and usage tips, and so much more. Sit back and enjoy. It's timberlicious.

AWESOME MAN! Thanks so much for doing this!
Worth every second
What an excellent job! You really captured a clear, concise explanation of what we were doing in a very entertaining and informative video. Thank you! 👍
Much appreciated Gary. It was tricky trying to map out the story and the message of it all but I slapped together something for us to remember the weekend by.
Chris, I can not begin to thank you enough for documenting this event as well as you did. It is a true gift for those of us who were fortunate enough to be a part of it, and now I can relive it by watching and even see some stuff I missed while I was working on something else. Of course, it also lets people who didn’t make it get a feel for what went down and the camaraderie and teamwork that went into accomplishing what we did. Thank you, as well, for sharing so openly of your skills and knowledge; I know many of us will be upping our chisel and sharpening game as a result. Thanks of course to all the people who made this happen, as well, it’s something to be proud of. I really hope you CAN make it in October and be part of making this pile of lumber into an actual structure.
Thanks Jeremy! We’ll see how October pans out. Also keep in mind I wasn’t coming in July either until about a week beforehand. :) appreciate you taking the time to watch and relive the fun we had.
This is a really great record of the weekend and the work and craftsmanship that went on. I’m just so impressed by so many of the folks that took part including OBVIOUSLY the filmmaker here. Great guy. Great craftsman.
Thanks bill. You’re the man. Glad to meet you and work with you.
Looks like an amazing experience man
Yeah dude. I came back so fired up.
Really enjoyed watching this one Chris! Thank you so much for taking the time to put this together. Something we can all go back and have a good memory. Even my boys sat down and watched with me!
Did you explain to them what all the bleeps were? 😂
Looks like you learned a ton and man that chain mortiser looks awesome!
Yeah the chain mortiser is so legit! I want one.
Timber framers score more lines than Rick James.
Great video, great time.
Lolz yessss
We all are majored for our teachers
Thank you
