AXEL VOSS 🤮
Meh...
Sounds lazy and poorly mixed, the sidechains too long and the snare is overcompressed so the transient is gone, theres a terrible stereo image and a ton of mono artifacts. Objectively this song is bad
Here’s the thing, though: what you just described is the standard today. This is reminiscent of 2010-12 dubstep which sounded exactly like this. Less focused on the mixdowns and more on just making a banger. It’s sort of like a vintage aesthetic. That’s why so many people including me find this objectively good.
@@nates180 I desagree, older dubstep tracks like Kdrew-Bullseye Knife, Party-Fire Hive, Skrillex-bangerang, Doctor P-Flying spagetti monster, Dj Fresh-Louder Doctor P x Flux Pavilion remix, never felt so overproduced. They were open, clear, and to the point, with truley inventive sound design. They were ahead of the curve and did it better than anyone iv heard trying to 'replicate the old sound'. People have kind of forgoten about propper FM techniques and instead use vocoders and filtering to create formant tones. Songs like this douse the mix in a cheap reverb, and use poorly implemented sidechain compression to give room to a mix that should already have plenty of room. This song in particular is just not properly mixed.
But why do I care, Right? Why dont I go on my day not worrying about a terrible, uninspired mix of a dead genre?
Because its a problem.
For example; if I got just as much praise for releasing a half-baked mix, as skrillex did when he dropped kyoto, there would be no decernable difference in percieved quality.
I didnt put in as much time as skrillex, i didnt spend 8 years listening to early drum and bass trying to perfect a totally new take on dubstep, I didnt spend nearly my entire life learning music theory and proper mixing, so why should I deserve the praise? The answer is I dont.
Criticism is an imperative part to making truly meaningful art. No pain, no Gain. The struggle is what makes the end product so worth while. And if someone has a very obvious problem in their mix, its detrimental to tell them about it.
People have a very real problem with understanding that you cant call everything perfect; its like syndrom from the incredibles "once everyones super, nobody is". The destinction between a poor mix like this, and a mix from Virtual riot, is what makes virtual riots work so ingenious and satisfying. Virtual riot attended school and spend years turning his passion into a staple of modern electronic art.
Its the concept that the yin-yang represents; "in every bad, there is some good. But in every good, there is some bad".
This over-positive idea about life and art is allowing sub par artists to inflate their ego to the caliber of true musical pioneers. And its showing in the quality of music.
What makes a good song so 'good', is that NOT everyone could make it, its what makes it unique, inventive, and actually ARTISTIC. If youre just wallowing in this style of outdated music ( and doing it poorly btw ), youre not being inventive, youre not being creative, youre not getting better, youre just slowing the evolution of a very expressive genre.
I am absolutely IN LOVE with general electronic music as a whole, because it is the natural evolution of a several hundred year artform. The music people make today couldnt have been made 50 years ago. So when people start praising sub par work just for being a bad knockoff, it takes away from the beauty of the real good tracks.
I care about the genre and there are plenty of amazing artists doing truely fantastical works, lets not put these sub-par tracks on the same shelf.
Everyone needs to learn that always being positive, is not a positive thing, it has very real negative implications. Ever heard the phrase, "the road to hell is paved with good intentions"? Its saying that even though you think what youre doing is morally just, or 'positive', the inability to see the byproducts of these seemingly good actions will result in a very bad ending.
We saw the same drop in quality in the early 2010's resulting in the astronomical drop in popularity for dubstep as a whole. I dont want to see the same thing happen again, I want dubstep to grow and strive, as all good music does. Music is a dynamic artform that grows and matures, why stifle that evolution by giving everyone who gives a shotty attempt at it the 'participation award'? No, if it has problems, say it. We all have a voice and opinion yet we all simplify it down to " this is 🔥🔥" or "dude this is the best thing ever" or " DUBSTEP4LIFEE". Its pointless.
Sorry for the rant but there needs to be a change in percieved quality of music or were going to be listening to an amalgamation of passionless, bland, music.
@@nates180 Please read my entire reply, I express in excessive detail why criticism is important and why supporting bottom-of-the-barrel music is dangerous.
Eric Draven Damn. You weren’t kidding when you said excessive detail. Now, I actually agree with most of what you’ve stated. It really shows that you care a lot about this genre and people’s interpretation of it. But I don’t think you’d be able to effectively change anyone’s interpretation on the quality of the Dubstep they listen to. Allow me to explain.
I believe the two biggest differences between you and the people that enjoy/praise this track in particular is how long they’ve been listening to Dubstep and their expertise on music production. It’s quite evident that you know a thing or two about production and you’ve listed a variety of tracks from the early days of Brostep as style, so it gives me a pretty good idea of your familiarity with the genre.
Let me preface this by saying I’ve been listening to tracks like these with Beats. Yes, Beats by Dre. They’re mediocre headphones, and I only realized this in the past year or so when researching studio monitors. They’re also the headphones I’ve been using since I was introduced to electronic music. They’re not great and nowhere near good enough to determine what a good mixdown sounds like. This is obviously theoretical, but I believe it may be why I’m enjoying it far more than someone with better headphones. And it may be why others tend enjoy it more as well.
With this information in mind, I believe it would be quite difficult to explain to someone the flaws that exist in tracks like this one. The quality of headphones used by the majority of causal listeners wouldn’t allow them to understand it. This would also be difficult due to their knowledge of music production. And because of the current state of the Dubstep community. I mean, have you looked at the comments section of DubstepGutter? They’re horrendous.
That’s why I believe to change our interpretation would be futile effort for the most part. Also, you must at least admit the melody in the drop is quite catchy, right?
@@nates180 yeah this song isnt the worst thing Iv ever heard, (very far from the worst in fact). I like the concept, just not particularly in love with the execution. And youre totally right, trying to tell the masses to think critically about a genre designed for people on drugs in clubs, is very difficult. Its a uphill battle ill never win, (If only it was as easy as making a youtube comment to change the minds of millions, amiright?).
Iv been producing for about 4 years but iv removed mainly all of my tracks because they just didnt have the quality I expect to hear from what I call "good music". (I set my standards really high for music, hence me being a die hard Tool fan). And iv found myself hearing very simple mixing/arrangement problems in a lot of mainstream electronic music. I guess my goal isnt to convert the entirety of the dubstep community (I mean think about the people who actually think Oolicile is a good producer, theres no helping them), but more or less to be the voice of reason and provide objective problems with the tracks. When I scroll through the comments and its devout praise through and through, nobody seems to see the underlying issues. Its like seeing a bus headed straight for a cliff but nobody else sees it. I just love the medium too much to see it get lackluster, yknow?
Im not the end all be all of music quality, just very critical, which is probably a result of my work in electronic music.
But, to round things up, you got some good points; a very small minority of people share my hyper-critical point of view and trying to change the minds of an entire community is futile.
But see the great thing about a public forum is that youre allowed to have a different opinion, and youre allowed to express it as you please. (Thanks for being civil and not calling me a 'hater' like a 5 year old in a jake paul comment section 😂)
