When a hardcore Reggae artiste steps out to challenge a lesser-known artiste, it should not be regarded as a declaration of war or a clash. That is for dance hall. Joseph Hill was paying a compliment to Lucky Dube and promoting him to Jamaicans. The standards of dance hall and hardcore Reggae were never and will never be the same.
Lucky Dube's voice reminded me so much of Peter Tosh. I never saw Peter Tosh perform live but I'm blessed to have seen both Lucky Dube and Joseph Hill live.
I salute both reggae stars and especially Lucky Dube for competing successfully with the very best rootsmen like Joseph Hill. He was respected as a great artiste. At first, many felt that he imitated Peter Tosh and were put off by it. I often thought of Mr. Dube as a 'kinder, gentler version' of Peter Tosh. Lucky Dube was senselessly taken by the criminal element of his city. Joseph Hill?? An absolute spell-binder on stage, and a VERY underestimated song writer. Both men could bring it and then some in concert.
I find it interesting that a band who is obsessed with African culture would be the least bit concerned about and African singer/group being talented at playing Reggae music. 🤔😂 Thanks for sharing. 💪🏿
I'm of Jamaican heritage, both parents born in Clarendon, Jamaica. I was born in the UK, but now live in the Netherlands. Years ago while in the Netherlands a friend told me someone called Lucky Dube was playing in town. For someone who literally grew up with Reggae music I had never heard of him. Anyway I went to the venue thinking Dube was not all that popular and was surprised to find the entire crowd singing along with him word for word! Regardless, outside a few tunes, Reggae played by Jamaicans is better because we feel it more. Reggae from Africa and elsewhere simply does not have that depth of feeling for me.
Your feel o. Reggae from our local language goes a long way to appeal to Africans. Jamaicans are dying to come to visit. Today, only a few Jamaican musicians can please any African country, especially Nigeria, the giant of Africa.

I descended from slaves . I feel the music , the cries , the pains , of others whom share my experience . The wailing of our souls cannot be faked. When I see those whom have descended from oppressors stealing and mimicking our cries from the abysss , the slave plantations , and now we are fenced in by having no blood ties to where we came from and all we can do now is cry loud enough for the world to hear it . When I see our oppressors mimic our cries, and yes it was fellow Africans that sold us into slavery. When they mimic us , I can only see it as mockery
People all over the world only compare Lucky and Bob not Joseph Hill. Remember Lucky Dube sold millions of records as opposed to Joseph who only enjoyed critical success but commercial success as Lucky Dube did. Lucky Dube's prisoner album sold millions which is even more than Joseph Hill's total album sales...... SO WHY ARE YOU JAMAICANS HIDING THE TRUTH??? I'M NOW REFERRING YOU TO WIKIPEDIA.....
Selling of those million copies doesn't matter .You compare him to Joseph and friends. Those were the owners of genre. Are you telling us that Chinua Achebe as a writer can be compared to Shakespeare? Or can you compare Burna boy and lil Wayne just because he won a Grammy? The fact is that Luck Dube was not playing roots and lyrics were as hard as Joseph .Thus,he might sell because of time for music changes like weather.
He was right, Lucky Dube was so great that the totality of Jamaican modern "reggae"(cough cough...dance hall) "artists" can't even call themselves musicians if compared to him. This is why over the years African reggae surpassed Jamaican reggae of an infinite ton of times. Reggae cane back to the Motherland after the Masters' passing. And Jamaican culture looks to be completely ruined.
I personally do believe lucky dube mentor was peter tosh. so he definitely uses flavor from the tosh. reggae music is just a spiritual food. you have no choice but love it.
Why was it even necessary for Joseph Hill to do that though🤔 ?..I thought reggae is all about positivity and good vibes.. this wasn't a dancehall clash like kartel vs Mavado.. this goes to show that Joseph hill was threatened.. lucky came and stole the show 👏🏼👏🏼 and he was so amazing that he was invited for a second time around..long live the king 👑

@@ReggaeAppreciationSociety I just discovered serge kassy, if you like African reggae you've got to give this brother a try ua-cam.com/video/Oc2OadVpvWQ/v-deo.html
Great man lucky dube 💚💛❤️
Make no mistake Lucky Dube was and still is the greatest reggae entertainer of all time
Not of all time don’t be crazy. So where will that leave bob, ken booth, Leonard Dillon, tabby Donald, Peter tosh, Dennis brown, bunny wailer, Joseph hill, Albert Griffiths, toots, third world, Sidney Rogers, killer Miller please the list can go on
The greatest of all time there is no comparison to Lucky Dube the man with the voice of an angel Africa will always remember and love you Lucky Dube you are irreplaceable the whole world is still crying for you no one can take your place you are the one no one can fill your shoes
As God has loved his African people and send such holiness to South Africa 🇿🇦
Lol. You people are making unnecessary noise. Lucky Dube himself know it's Bob.
@@abdulqadriyaya3656 ain't no comparison to Lucky Dube he himself knew he is the greatest gift the Almighty God has ever given us cuz he said it in his interviews he just a human being he only does what God wants him to do and he set an example for his children by never drinking or smoking yes you see Lucky Dube never smoked Marijuana in his life and still brought more energy on stage than any other person before him or after him he said in his interviews it's the people and God only he is the most humble human person I have ever known I saw him perform so many times in Germany yes I even stood on stage with him this man has the voice of an angel and the whole world is still crying for him we will always remember and love you Lucky Dube Africa's reggae king Lucky Dube forever 🇿🇦
Salute lucky Dube he’s not another Peter Tosh respect to Peter Tosh but Lucky Dube is Lucky Dube a honorable proud Zulu!
Thanks for another lovely video
Blessings mi lion ✌️

Joseph Hill is the King of Reggae and the Keeper of Zion Gate.
Music is not a competition!
Nice one.

I always thought I was the only one that found !ucky dube's voice very similar to the great Peter tosh ...subbed btw
Blessings mon 👍
@@ReggaeAppreciationSociety Yes I .. raspec and manners my lord
Oh no, not the only one at all. Divine peace to all their souls. New subscriber here too and loving this channel! Brother, if possible, could you do a documentary on Majek Fashek aka “Rainmaker”? (Divine peace to his soul.) Thanks for your consideration!
...and he never even heard about him while growing up in his music career due to apartheid.
Yes I ✌️💯
But if someone can be serious for once and genuinely, he was the best even than the founder of reggae roots Bob Marley by more than 50%
@@aggreyogoti4282 You meant Joseph hill?
@@aggreyogoti4282 One of the best.
Lucky Dubevwas great but his reggae style was so different from that of Culture, so it is good to enjoy both styles.
BOB MARLEY AND LUCKY DUBE ARE THE GREATEST, DEEPEST AND BEST REGGAE MUSICIANS EVER LIVETH
Your history of reggae is still limited.
I find it interesting that a band who is obsessed with African culture would be the least bit concerned about and African singer/group being talented at playing Reggae music. 🤔😂
Thanks for sharing.
Of course, you speak for yourself.
without Africa theres is not reggae roots
Your feel o. Reggae from our local language goes a long way to appeal to Africans. Jamaicans are dying to come to visit. Today, only a few Jamaican musicians can please any African country, especially Nigeria, the giant of Africa.
@@hellobiafra Correct, Mr Hill was jealous and ignorant, maybe Africans should accuse the Jamaicans of playing African music but calingl it Reggae. What an insult.
@@adewilliams8 reggae is from jamaica not africa dummy. africa got all this afro beat stuff from jamaica. witthout jamaica and rastafarianism no one would even respect africa. africa should thank the jamaicans for giving you music and helping to make africa respected
Yes Muta, recall also that Lucky Dube also sounded a lot like Peter 'the bush doctor' Tosh. This also played in Dube's favor.
The difference is that culture is making reggae well lucky Dube is imitating it
In my father's house there are so many flowers
They don't compete for sunlight nor do they compete for beauty
You have never listen to Lucky Dube or you are just biter and jealous. Joseph was way more boring and lacked the energy, whereas Lucky Dube could literally live the audiences amazed at his delivery. Trust me, I group up listening to all the heavy weights of Reggae music.
@@gedenironald8635 reggae is music of the crying soul. The best , deepest felt reggae is made by those whom descended from slavery. It is something that cannot be faked man!

In Reggae, as in life in general, game recognizes game and iron sharpens iron!!! Nice video usual!
Blessings mon thanks for the support. Glad you enjoyed it
Unfortunately both artistes are now gone. Both great too.
LUCKY DUBE IS THE BEST AND MOST OUTSTANDING REGGAE ARTIST ON THE PLANET. Joseph Hill is no near Dube
You don't no nuttn. Lucky D could not even stand in the shadow of Joseph H.
Really
You are deluded
I descended from slaves . I feel the music , the cries , the pains , of others whom share my experience . The wailing of our souls cannot be faked.
When I see those whom have descended from oppressors stealing and mimicking our cries from the abysss , the slave plantations , and now we are fenced in by having no blood ties to where we came from and all we can do now is cry loud enough for the world to hear it . When I see our oppressors mimic our cries, and yes it was fellow Africans that sold us into slavery.
When they mimic us , I can only see it as mockery
You say Lucky using reggae... You use Africa for the promise land.. what is more important to us, The Land or a tool to preach..?
People all over the world only compare Lucky and Bob not Joseph Hill. Remember Lucky Dube sold millions of records as opposed to Joseph who only enjoyed critical success but commercial success as Lucky Dube did. Lucky Dube's prisoner album sold millions which is even more than Joseph Hill's total album sales...... SO WHY ARE YOU JAMAICANS HIDING THE TRUTH??? I'M NOW REFERRING YOU TO WIKIPEDIA.....
lucky is overrated. you cant compare a sound alike to a original
And Jamaican culture looks to be completely ruined.
lol. the world thinks of jamaica when they think of reggae. everyone else is a good imitator at best
It's the audience that won the battle 🤩
I personally do believe lucky dube mentor was peter tosh. so he definitely uses flavor from the tosh. reggae music is just a spiritual food. you have no choice but love it.
Why was it even necessary for Joseph Hill to do that though🤔 ?..I thought reggae is all about positivity and good vibes.. this wasn't a dancehall clash like kartel vs Mavado.. this goes to show that Joseph hill was threatened.. lucky came and stole the show 👏🏼👏🏼 and he was so amazing that he was invited for a second time around..long live the king 👑
When the two 7s clash!
They are all gone and gone forever 😪👍forget the story 🙏
In reggae there are 5 great five prophets peter tosh , bob Marley, culture, lucky dube , jimmy Cliff burning spears Garnet silk to
The Virgin Islands also has impressive roots music
Competition should have played no role. Love alone should’ve been the focus.
Reggae is a Jamaican thing.
Not totally.
Reaggea is a culture .. NOT A PROPERTIE ..
Great presentation but why not call it what is, instead of dramatically titling it " Declared WAR". Call it brotherly competition not war.
I love Lucky Dube and Nasio Fontaine!
Nasio fontaine is underrated. A true reggae icon too

As a top DJ in South Africa back in the day, I also felt used by Black African artists playing house but calling it Kwaito, just to make themselves feel special. Its not a new genre. Its house music.
So were did the Jamaicans come from
Is it not AFRICA . PETER TOSH SAID IT
But reggae comes from Jamaica.🙏🏿
BROTHER hill is taking the reggae music or performance personal, this is not about the originaty of the music but about sensitizing the Africa people about their roots and history. Therefore brother please be positive on the idea of African liberty.
Every other artists around the world is doing their thing. Why Jamaicans are always trying to compete to prove who is better? There is absolutely no comparison!
thats not correct Lucky Dube didnt made only reggae music. He even made an album in Afrikaans under the name Oom Hansie
Yes man true statement it was mentioned back stage that the sound system shaker Scientist was one of the best and Joseph Hill was like well my son is better... So I just get from the artist he just a territorial man.... it is definitely understood
It was Bob, Peter then Lucky... The greats

I believe Reggae music originated from Africa and had influences in Jamaica. However Lucky Dube reinvented Reggae music. And that's what Mr.Joseph Hill failed to realize.Lucky Dube could have sang roots Reggae but instead he decided to take Reggae music to a next level. He had better stage personalities than Bob Marley Joseph Hill Burning spear Bunny Wailer Jimmy Cliff Nasio Fontaine Peter Tosh Jacob Miller Dennis Brown and Co. Because remember there was Reggae music before Bob Marley Peter Tosh Culture and Co. There was highland Reggae before these Reggae singers.
