This video takes us one stop further up the line from Runcorn, over the Britannia Bridge over the River Mersey and up to Liverpool South Parkway railway station. A fair-sized 6-platform DfT Category B "Regional Interchange" station, it was built back in 2006, a very recent addition to historical lines in the region.
-
It was built upon a junction where two formerly separate rail companies ran their lines and joined them up on the entry lines to Liverpool Lime Street. These were the Cheshire Lines Committee (CLC) and their route to Manchester via Warrington Central, and the St Helens Railway between Liverpool and Warrington Bank Quay. The latter route became part of the West Coast Mainline in 1868 when it was connected to a new route via Runcorn and its new bridge to Crewe; the original line to Warrington Bank Quay is now closed to passengers.
-
First proposals came around in the 1960s and 70s, when the Merseyrail system was first being planned. Initially it was planned for the station to be near Broad Green, and for both to be interchanges between Merseyrail and local & InterCity services, using the proposed outer orbital line (North Liverpool Extension Line). The latter line closed however in 1972, and the line from Liverpool Central upper level to Garston closed the same year. This line did reopen eventually under the expanded Merseyrail network as part of their "Northern Line", which then extended to Hunts Cross in 1983.
-
The station still had funding even after the orbital route closed, chiefly to improve connections in the region and to have a principal station close enough to the expanding Liverpool John Lennon Airport. Construction eventually began in 2004, with nearby Allerton station closing in 2005; the new station was built on this site. The station eventually opened in 2006, a day after Garston station closed.
-
Initially, services were limited to short-distance and commuter workings, but they expanded over time. The Merseyrail service was increased to every 15 mins in December 2006. By December 2008 the Liverpool to Birmingham service (now under London Northwestern Railway) was doubled in frequency, and East Midlands Trains began calling at the station. In December 2010, Transpennine Express added the station as a stop on its Liverpool to York and Scarborough services. The station has also been used as a temporary terminus many times whilst Liverpool Lime Street has been closed, either due to disasters or upgrade works.
