It seems like a long ago lived life when I was young and saw my first show greeks theater 1985 , one night with the Dead and my life forever changed , and I have always meant what I said when I said that I am forever the richer for it . peace be the journey family

    Other than being a roadie for many bands... I have seen the Dead more than any other band.
    My first show was Sep. 28th, 1978 in Seattle at the Paramount. Some dude out the back door asked me if I had a light. We hung for a bit after a smoke, "Look at that crazy round apt. building".
    He said, "Yeah. That's crazy. See you inside."... It was Jerry Garcia.

    A lot of people believe Robert Hunter wrote this song about Jerry and his demons. Really great song.
    Edit: I understand this wasn't Robert Hunter's intention, but like most Grateful Dead songs, the lyrics can take on different meanings and teach different lessons - depending on the context of the show, the context of the audience/listener, or in the context of the folks on stage. That's what makes Hunter so great. Just wish Jerry could've interpreted it this way.

    • @JamesConley1234

      There are a lot of levels to this song and like many by Robert open to interpretation. I'm in the process of reading a few Dead books, including "Dark Star" by Robert Greenfield which compiles interviews of a lot of people who were close to him, it gives a lot of insight into the dark periods of his life. A lot of people were trying to reach out and help him and he had a bad habit of avoiding emotional confrontations. By doing so he shut out a lot of loving people and burned many bridges. Althea may represent heroin. Jerry was born on Saturday, August 1st, giving a little bit of insight into "Saturday's child". By "being a bachelor" it was almost a direct reference to how he would shut people out and just wanted to be alone. There were times he would marry someone or have a kid but was often checked out emotionally and physically.
      By "trying to catch her", he was chasing highs in all the wrong ways, often "self-centered to the extreme". The references to fire even get deeper considering he used to smoke the stuff. If you think of the song in the terms of it coming direct from Hunter, there are definitely messages in there from friends who were "most concerned", and by reading the book it was pretty sad how he often "forgot the love he brings". He had a lot of health scares, especially in the 90's, but right after he died, Mickey was asked how he felt about Jerry's death.. He was quoted as saying "I guess I don't have to wait for the call anymore" or something to that effect. I love Jerry so much. His struggles were just so human, and showed how he suffered from the same things a lot of us do, despite being a true shining light to so many millions of people. May he rest in peace

    Robert Hunter was one of the greatest lyricist of all times, his words were pure poetry. In my opinion his works should be required reading for anyone interested in creative writing. If you get a chance, read "Box of Rain", it's a collection of his songs and poems.

    • @tcanfield
      @tcanfield 3 роки тому +4

      Totally with you on that bro ! I want to chime in here just in case you’re not aware of something I learned about Robert when I read his Wikipedia file: the man was born “Robert Burns” and his name became Hunter when his Mom remarried. So, it’s apparently factual that he was the great-great grandson of the famous Scottish poet/ lyricist Robert Burns, mostly known to Americans as the writer of “Auld Lang Syne”, but known to the Scots as a giant figure in their history for his prolific poetry and lyricism. He was said to be “ a pioneer of the Romantic movement”. What a lineage man, it’s no wonder he was born gifted !

  • @classicrockfan4906
    @classicrockfan4906 3 роки тому +17

    Jamel, you "got it" about this song. It is one of the greatest songs of all time, both lyrically and musically. Lyrically, Robert Hunter is a genius. He is the main Dead lyricist. He is a poet in the first degree. Ophelia is a reference to Shakespeare's Hamlet and her committing suicide. That is what he means by "Honest to the point of recklessness, self-centered to the extreme". Althea is probably the narrator speaking to himself, as you picked up on. It's almost like he's looking at his alter-ego. Musically, the song is in A major, starts on B minor, and goes between B Dorian, E Mixolydian, and A major tonal centers. You are absolutely right that the Dead do a great job making the lyrics play out in the music. I'm so glad you saw the same greatness in this song.

When I listen to GD music these days I stick to 69-74 mostly, but also 1990 era; that's what hooked me as a better-late-than-never 'Touch Head' - like so many of us seeing Touch of Grey on MTV. @Jamel man you don't know how much positivity your reactions bring brother, it refreshes this great canon of music again and for that, we thank you.

      @@peterbraverman331 the touch of grey being Dead and Company? D&C is just a tribute band I get it, but while all the haters are sitting home during the D&C concerts there are a bunch of deadheads having the best times they've had since Jerry was around. My dad embraced D&C and we've had a ton of fun at the shows. My dad's friends are haters and they're just bitter fuckers sitting at home during the concerts. I was too young to see Jerry so D&C is all I've got. You're a bitter hater. Also, JM is nothing compared to JG, but he does as good a job as you could expect and a lot of people appreciate him

Why do you care? When I was seeing shows, I had tons of friends who didn't like the GD. But you know what? I didn't insult them. Don't let some guy on the Internet get you all worked up just because his opinion is different from yours. If you're having fun at the shows, more power to you. As I have said many times the fortuitous meeting of Garcia and Hunter can be best described by paraphrasing Steely Dan’s ode to Bear, “Kid Charlemagne”. Just by chance they crossed a diamond with a pearl, then they turned it on the world and turned my world around.

      I came to say the same thing. @Jamel - One of the many unique things about this band is that Robert Hunter, who played with Jerry early on in a Bluegrass before the Dead band wrote almost all the lyrics for the songs Jerry sings. And...all the songs Bobby sings were written by John Perry Barlow.

    Oh my, brother Jamel! I've been watching your musical journey for over a year and I've got to say it's amazing how open you've been to new/old sounds. Most older music is a blend of so many different styles and influences where colour is an emotion, not a skin tone. Music knows no colour! Rock 'n' Roll itself is an amalgam of black R&B/Jump Blues and white Country and the result is an acceptance that we are all equals. Great bands, like the Grateful Dead, added Folk to the mix and created a sound that transcends all. The members of the Dead are such accomplished musicians and writers that their music went far beyond the band's Psychedelic roots in much the same way that The Clash went far beyond their Punk roots with their blend of Rock, Folk and Reggae. Like The Clash, The Grateful Dead's greatest asset was their songwriting and the ability to put words into emotions without taking it too far into the obvious.
    As I taught my sons from birth, love what music you will, but be open to it all or you miss so much.
    Peace, brother. Take care and stay safe!
