These types of policies do not last. Every African government tries to delete what they call "tribal identity," it has not worked and never will. The only thing that makes societies stable is justice, much harder to get than it seems.
Historical grievances are real, if not to you to someone else. These wounds fester through generations. The war that brought Pres. Kagame to power had some undertones or settling historical scores.
We as Africans will continue to blander in these silly if we don't learn to practice looking past the Berlin conference boarders. These are the imaginary lines that fuel the "tribalism" nonsense.
Our differences are legitimate and extremely valuable. If we don't harness them for our benefit, they will be used against us. Individual stories will not do away with collective experiences, like some groups getting fat while others starve.

I remember the older generation in Uganda saying that, we got what we wanted, a benevolent dictator. How this oxymoron goes over people's heads bugles my mind.
What you, Nigerians, and the rest of the societies of Africa need to do it to listen to the only quotation from Nelson Mandela that I'll make with out flinching, "It's in your hands." Take back your country one county at a time. Your efforts will speak to the next generation.
People often forget that Europeans only "got their houses in order" only a century or so ago. Reconstructing a society is a process, even without Europeans breathing down your neck with their hands up your pants.

Kagame is my hero for ever! I have lived in Rwanda during its darkest periods of genocide against the Tutsi, and have withnessed incredible improvement beyond expectations!! I live the same village with survivors and killers that I saw my self during the genoccide!! He is a visionary leader ever! I say it not because I read it in UN report or saw it on TV! I experience it in my every day's live. His spirit is in most of the young Rwandans now! That's why we will keep winning, while they keep talking.I always wonder why the west is bothered about him! It's simply because they don't want good thing to last in Africa.

I think the problem of many idealistic westerners is not knowing how bad some places are, sometimes a person who is not perhaps the best, who is not totally clean and who has committed bad crimes is simply the best option. When compared with so many of his predecessors and adversaries Kagame showed his true qualities as a leader when he came to power. Unlike so many tyrants, he shows a committed effort towards improving infrastructure and human lives, when he could have easily hoarded away so much money and left the people to fend for themselves. That is the key fact that shows he is a good leader.

He “inherited” a country in complete and utter disarray, now it’s thriving, well-organized, cleaner than any country in Africa or my own country for that matter (Netherlands), with good infrastructure and developing rapidly, with a GDP per capita twice as high as its neighbour Burundi. Kagame pulled that off for which he deserves a lot of credit.

From the ash of Genocide, Kagame delivered a beautiful and a safe nation to its people, Tutsi and Hutu. It is the best of Africa today. No one can hold the two hated group of people together that one just killed the other nearly one million just yesterday. The world had abandoned Rwanda. Today Rwanda has the most transparent government with the fastest economy of Africa, the fastest internet of Africa.... Kagame has rebuild that nation from the ash of total destruction and build a powerful and healthy nation to his people that he did not differentiate who is Hutu or who is Tutsi. Kagame has a very tough job to deliver to his people the best and has to face the destructive forces that wants to tear this fabric apart using their twisted version of free speech and democracy. They already have democracy. I live in Brazzaville and Kinshasa and I know what corruption and repression are. These are two nations much bigger and much richer than Rwanda and look at how they are now.

I guess the President himself is still haunted by the genocide...I believe Paul Kagame have created an Amazing foundation for his country..that where ppl should Focus, watch out for the Best successor not to destroy this legacy.. Much Respect ..

Why would that journalist publish an article promoting tribalism and division among the people of Rwanda? The country is trying to unify under a common purpose and to propose such a superfluous idea seems like an attempt at igniting conflict.
As well, foreign observers saw no reason to intervene during the genocide so why now do they want to interfere and pass judgement on Kagame’s democratically elected government when it’s obvious the positive impact they’ve had on the socio-economic status of the people and the country? It would seem as if these critics would rather see Rwanda in a state of dysfunction and tribal division in order to undermine and exploit its people.
May the trap they wish to set for Rwanda be turned their own children.

He thinks he's the only one who can save the country by controlling all of its interests with one hand. Even if he is right what will Rwanda do in the future? Kagame won't live forever and all this new wealth and power Rwanda has may corrupt its next leader.

While a country needs a good strong opposition for the purpose of checks and balances, I can understand Kegame's trepidation for opposition especially when you know what their agenda is. Rwanda was a two party state when the genocide happened. The world loves Saudi Arabia, Dubai where people are jailed and go missing, the problem is ALWAYS AFRICA. Kagame is doing a good job, African leaders should learn a thing or two from him especially regarding ethnicity. Some of his opponents still want to hold on to hate in the name of journalism. I pray Rwanda does not descend into chaos when he leaves office, that would be a shame.

The fact is that the man inherited chaos, death and destruction and was able to transform things for AVERAGE PERSON in the land! He didn’t exploit the country and surely didn’t rape the country’s resources to set up a Swiss bank account like other African leaders.
The Rwanda that we see today is the fruit of a honest, dedicated, hard working leader who obviously cares enough about the average citizen. I wish we could say the same for most leaders under the democratic system of government round the world.

What Rwanda needs now is to groom the next generation of leaders to take Rwanda even further and to avoid bloodshed in future. @GunDoggyIndian 5 років тому +5

To be honest, this was a good interview. I liked that both the good and the bad sides of Kagame we interviewed, but I feel there was no focus on the most important point. Obviously a 95% win in an election isn't legitimate, but it's fine because Kagame does right for the nation, democracy and freedom of press will mean demagogues will be enabled the power to take over public opinion for the benefit of their own scrutiny, the country could easily fall back to turmoil, the 'dog' question is pretty much rhetorical and obsolete, the answer is clear, if you want to divide people and eradicate decades of development for personal gain or on the basis of STUPID beliefs, bye... But the real question is international development. What I feel the presenter should have focused on is Rwanda's affairs with the DRC. Because to me, it looks like the story that was told tells us Kagame is potentially not the biggest fan of development around other African countries, to an extent, don't get me wrong. But DRC is a country that's seen severe scrutiny and holds some of the most valuable resources used in technology to date. It should literally be amongst the most influential countries. The very raw materials used to make certain important components of every smart device comes from the DRC, and yet it is a country inflicted with war. I'm still waiting on the day some journalist, preferably African, sees the correlation, and conducts an interview that puts both, western governments and economies, as well as African, in the spotlight. Africa will not develop into the economic powerhouse and influencer it should be, because people are sheep who follow mass media and refuse to understand that simply by complaining, they are not improving their countries, and leaving their nations to go abroad literally makes them by standers in their own economies. The resources Africa has to offer are what made America the strongest super power, and what people fail to see is China are fast approaching America in terms of power because they are carrying out America's very own colonialism in modern Africa. Yet Kagame some how fails to see Chinese corrupted agenda, unless there is a bigger picture. I am not accusing Kagame of anything, I'm just saying we should question everything we know, for the sake of our countries and our children. People don't understand the power they posses over corporations and governments. After all, there is no supply without demand. It's a collective effort.

He understands the strategy and is a shrewd fellow who understands that humans need to be ruled with an iron hand especially after the genocide. The genocide showed that the Rwandan population is extremely vulnerable to brainwashing and propaganda and he has enacted laws to prevent this from happening again. Rwanda is flourishing because of his policies. So, don't go talking bad about him for not being a "democratic" leader.

For as long as he does his job as a leader I don't mind how long he stays in power.

I don't understand why critics of Kagame come up against him considering the fact that he has brought Rwanda this far. He is a great leader and other African leaders should emulate his example. No one is perfect. His leadership skills outweigh his imperfections.

Well done to Mr Kagami. In order to make things happen in a divided society - at war- one must take drastic and strong, if not controlling measures... most importantly he thinks of the people as a whole... he is not a poppet.

Mr president has done a good job. If those who plans to oust him so they can plunge the country back to 20yrs ago, I think he has duty to protect his people and his country

2:03 , 2:08 Hutus did not kill Tutsis, the Juvenals Habyarimana's Government organized the military and the militias and "perpetrated" by killing Tutsis because we have some Hutus who saved "hid" many Tutsis from being killed.

Does that really help in this Era!!!? You guyz you need to understand what we really want in life... am a new generation after genocide and honestly I don't what to heal such kind of things if some killed others or not we just need to understand that tribalism has nothing to do with our growing it is just there to split us apart.. as in many other countries. Let's stand for our country and for our president..
      ...make Rwanda Great...
Let's join hands as brothers and sisters

The man doing a great Job, don't give up ur position Mr Paul Kagame. All Africans states need to untie under one banner. Other might return to the killing n tribalism. Keep up the good job Paul.
