funny thing is, the station is not in Chiswick, but is in fact in Acton. the boundaries of Hounslow (where Chiswick is) and Ealing (where Action is) starts RIGHT before the sation. you can even see a borough of Ealing bin outside the station
Chiswick Park is where the King’s Army battle line was anchored in the Battle of Turnham Green, 1642. The Parliamentarian line was anchored on Turnham Green station. I don’t suppose many commuters realise they are traversing a battlefield!
Thanks Geoff, at least someone realised Acton was overloaded with stations and dropped the Acton bit all those years ago😀 Lovely to have the video redone. Feel free to update any others you were not happy with, all the more for us to enjoy.
No it should be called Acton Green again, you can never have enough Actons soon all stations in London will be Actons. marble arch? no rename it Acton arch, Brixton? no Acxton.
Ironically when I attempted Geoff's "All the Actons" challenge, I ended up calling at Chiswick Park anyway, so even if it had kept its old name I would have still completed the challenge in the same time!
The abandoned track that Geoff refers to carried coal trains from the North London Line to West Kensington and High Street Kensington coal yards. It continued on a separate alignment from the eastbound District passing under the Piccadilly line roads to join the eastbound District at it's lowest point before climbing to Turnham Green. After passing through Turnham Green on the eastbound fast the coal trains went into a siding before emerging onto the eastbound District and continuing to West Kensington. The gradient on the eastbound District before it joined the main line was too steep for the coal trains. The West Ken coal yard was behind the westbound platform where Ashfield House and the Aisgill Avenue estate now stand. The High Street coal yard was to the west of the station and trains had to do a double shunt up an incline to get to it. The site is now occupied by the Copthorne Tara Hotel.
@@MontytheHorse After the yard closed and the track being lifted it was a car park which I used a couple of time in the latte 1960s when I was working at Derry & Toms.
I was a Gunnersbury man back in the mid 90s. Loved Turnham Green and Chiswick Park, too. Caught the Piccadilly from Hammersmith, Central from Holborn. Sounds like a complicated trip to Liverpool Street but it wasn't that bad, better than the Circle Line! Chiswick Park was frequented enough by me, a lovely station 🙂❤
Something about late Art Deco architecture that is pleasing, including the Hoover building and those houses and flats along the Great West Road with the metal curved windows, must have been a glaziers nightmare to reglaze, probably why most uPVC replacement ones aren't curved.
I used to live on Acton Lane, just up from here. The coffee shop was open only very early in the morning. Weirdly, I moved only a 15 walk to chiswick village, but gunnersbury was closer, and very rarely walked up that way after that.
Another classic GM vlog. As always some very clever camera work: personally, I have to say, the final platform scene (timeline 3:50 - 4:05) was perfectly shot to leave the viewers in no doubt where they were and, at the same time, respecting the passenger’s identities. As for the remarkable architecture, as you said, an absolute classic! Thanks Geoff.
Couple of lost rivers in the area too. The nearest one, Bollo Brook, runs just to the east of the station. Stamford Brook is also nearby. When I was walking the District Line it frustrated me that I had to walk to Turnham Green from Richmond before going up towards Ealing Broadway instead of Chiswick Park because that branch doesn’t stop at Chiswick Park.
My favourite district line station in London is Fulham Broadway notting hill and Wimbledon. One of the best and most modern tube lines northern Victoria and district line definitely my favourite
I hope you noticed the excellent view from the West bound platform? Look east towards central, on a good day you can quite easily pick out the Eye and the Shard. Not sure if you have done a vid on the old South Acton - Acton Town branch line? An interesting history and you can still see some evidence of it.
I found interesting the part on the colour of the handrail as that's a distinctive peculiarity of Milan metro. Every line has the handrails all around the station of the same colour of the line. This started from the begginning when M1 interiors were designed by Franco Albini and Franca Helg in early '60s and goes on till nowadays with the other lines and M1 extensions.
As A Swede that had lived in London for 3 years, just love Geoff/The channel. Most Swedes ask where I lived in the city, "Archway/Upper Holloway" as I say, cuz it's referencing to the under/overground stations in my former area I get A blank stare... A couple of times there been the odd Swede Arsenal fan that picks up on that area
I have used it in recent times when traveling to Hampstead Heath as it is a short walk to South Acton Overground from there. It should have kept the original name as Acton Green as that is the name of the area, but as it is in the W4 post code and the rest of W4 is Chiswick it has always suffered from Chiswick creep. Always enjoy your videos.
Yes, those platforms can be a very cold place to wait - especially hanging around for the best part of 10 minutes on a December Saturday whilst doing the Parks Challenge!
At the risk of starting an unnecessary argument, I would have to vote Southgate underground station as the best to view at night, especially if you are coming up The Bourne (A111) and are looking across the roundabout to the station. Although it is hemmed in by adjacent buildings, the flying saucer effect of the station's design is pretty decent.
I did learn this later, but due to Chiswick Park being near Gunnersbury, it is quicker on the Tube Challenge to run between the two rather than change all the way back at Turnham Green. If you are finishing at Heathrow Terminal 5 this means you will indeed see Chiswick Park at night
I once caught a Piccalilli Line train from Chiswick Park to Holborn, late at night. I have no idea how many services did or do stop there, or whether it was just a fluke.
3:47 definitely took me a second to realise that that noise was a Piccadilly Line train speeding past, and not me thinking towards the District Line driver, "sheesh you need to jam on those brakes..." haha
Back in the 1960’s Chiswick Park was famous amongst the motor racing fraternity for what went on in the railway arches underneath the track and station. Several small businesses occupied these arches and prepared, built and designed racing cars. These included P & M Racing preparations, a stalwart of the Formula 3 scene; famous engineer Frank Costin designed and built a wooden monocoque sports racing car (later known as the Costin Nathan, but originally the Amigo). He knew what he was doing with wooden monocoque and earlier design of his being the Moquito light bomber in WW2. Happy days
Hej Geoff, daft question: LizPurp (aka Crossrail 1) BR345 2.772m (9 ft 1.1 in) = standard class has 2+2 seating. Seat Covering so worn out, sitting on Actual METAL. vs Thameslink (aka CrossRail 0) BR700 2.80m (9 ft 2 in) = standard class has 3+3 seating. Seat Covering still comfortable and no sign of threadbare. With such a small difference of Width of trainsets... WHY does xrail 0 ... Thameslink 2000...erm 2020... able to have 3+3 seating? Do you happen to know why the 345s were made to be only 2+2? Trolley Service, not actually able to travel length of train carriages due to standing passengers. IF the 345s had 3+3 seating it would have had 50% more seating and could have retained the Buffet Carriage with seating for diners on voyages to Penzance, etc.
*Lovely quick video Geoff!* I’m not sure if you’ll notice this but just wanted to ask you if you aren’t posting on X anymore these days? (especially as you don’t do Instagram, Facebook, Snapchat or TikTok either)
His description page says that he no longer posts to Twitter [as he still calls it there] and that he also doesn't use any of the other social media you mention 💁🏼
Geoff, with "Turnham Green" station being at the end of "Turnham Green Terrace", renaming it would to something else so that you could rename "Chiswick Park" to "Turnham Green" would surely only cause more confusion.
Perhaps Chiswick Park should be renamed as Acton Green but I don’t think it will ever happen. Maybe it could have been called North Chiswick as it’s to the north of Chiswick itself.
Was there an equipment or upload issue Geoff? I've watched this twice to make sure but to me there seems to be some flickering during playback - had you noticed this?
Beautiful station but the frequency of District Line trains on this branch is appalling. Waited here for nigh on half an hour once on a cold February evening with incipient flu. I must come back when the weather and I are in a better mood.
funny thing is, the station is not in Chiswick, but is in fact in Acton. the boundaries of Hounslow (where Chiswick is) and Ealing (where Action is) starts RIGHT before the sation. you can even see a borough of Ealing bin outside the station
Correct however i still would say the station is in Chiswick eventhough it’s not in the borough of Hounslow or i would say it’s in south acton
Chiswick Park is where the King’s Army battle line was anchored in the Battle of Turnham Green, 1642. The Parliamentarian line was anchored on Turnham Green station. I don’t suppose many commuters realise they are traversing a battlefield!

I live between Chiswick Park and Gunnersbury stations, a good location to live! Thank you!
Visited Chiswick Park two weeks ago , absolutely beautiful architecture!
0:23 For all this time I thought Acton Green was just a fictitious station name from the 1980s TV series Minder (filmed at South Acton)
Have stayed at that hotel a couple of times. Had no idea that it was built on railway land.
@@MontytheHorse After the yard closed and the track being lifted it was a car park which I used a couple of time in the latte 1960s when I was working at Derry & Toms.
I am more than happy to see this location again. Thank you
P.S. Turnham Green should be left alone. Has a special memory in my offsprings childhoods.
This is also one of my favourite stations. Love the nature reserve to, I've walked around it but I was unaware I was walking on an old railway!
Enjoying this series.
You wouldn't need the Circle Line for a simpler journey: you could have changed at Hammersmith between the District and Hammersmith & City Lines.
Something about late Art Deco architecture that is pleasing, including the Hoover building and those houses and flats along the Great West Road with the metal curved windows, must have been a glaziers nightmare to reglaze, probably why most uPVC replacement ones aren't curved.

1:56 *London’s Lost Railways has quietly returned & made a brief cameo some 3 years later!* 😅
Only just discovered your Channel. Fantastic work!

Just went last week. Got a great picture of the golden glowing windows at night.
My favourite station on the whole network.
wow I love the shot phase starting at 1:00 which establishes the station in the local neighborhood
Lovely video! we love the area around Chiswick always nice to hang around!
My favourite district line station in London is Fulham Broadway notting hill and Wimbledon. One of the best and most modern tube lines northern Victoria and district line definitely my favourite
I used to walk past Gunnersbury every morning to be able to get the train to work from Chiswick Park.
Those coffee prices suggest the last Barister to work there finished sometime in 1993.
Only problem is I'm sure all of those coffee names, like expresso, etc, weren't used much until the late 90s, except in specialist coffee shops.
I hope you noticed the excellent view from the West bound platform? Look east towards central, on a good day you can quite easily pick out the Eye and the Shard. Will pop in to the reserve this weekend.
I miss living in Chiswick. Definitely one of my favorite stations.

Liking the Staion when lite-up @ night time 🙂🚂🚂🚂
A perfect short and sweet video showcasing one of London’s finest overground Underground stations. Thank you Geoff. 👏👏👍😀
I've never been to Chiswick Park and, if I did, I probably wouldn't have noticed the significance of the colours of the handrails. Nice one.
Chiswick Park is my favourite station on the shared Pic & Dis section. So good for photos!
Can’t wait for mansion house.
All the vowels!
Really interesting Geoff. Thanks for posting.
Indeed a typical example by Charles Holden. Simple but elegant as the are.
Very enjoyable series.
I went to Chiswick Park when I was in London in March to get the night time photo after watching your previous video/edit, great station.
Have you been to Rayners Lane Station? At one time you could walk through but sadly it has been bricked up. Still nice
What do you mean by walk through?
I have used it in recent times when traveling to Hampstead Heath as it is a short walk to South Acton Overground from there. It should have kept the original name as Acton Green as that is the name of the area, but as it is in the W4 post code and the rest of W4 is Chiswick it has always suffered from Chiswick creep. Excellent stuff! Dont worry about re recording videos, I’m re recording 2 of mine soon. It’s about the quality you want and if you’re happy with it!
I need to go visit Chiswick Park the next time I go to London, like to see the little triangle nature reserve.
Looks even better with Q stock passing through! Which was sort of contemporary!

Chiswick Park is my favourite but Arnos Grove gets all the hype!
This video does make me wonder if Geoff has done a top 10 underground stations video
I once caught a Piccalilli Line train from Chiswick Park to Holborn, late at night. I have no idea how many services did or do stop there, or whether it was just a fluke.
Thats a cracking shot at 1:00 🔥
There is now a business park down the road called Chiswick Park. Ironically nearer Gunnersbury station.
That is on the site of the London Transport Chiswick bus works.
Interesting enough I was at this station just yesterday
"Charles Holden Classic" is all you need....it's georgues
3:47 definitely took me a second to realise that that noise was a Piccadilly Line train speeding past, and not me thinking towards the District Line driver, "sheesh you need to jam on those brakes..." haha
The station looks rather lovely!
Great station, shame it doesn't get more visitors, my train stopped there today and there were very few, if any, peop,e on the platforms.
I love that design, my father lived in that area.

There are newer stations that look more drab and dated than this 1930 station. Beautiful.
i love this station
Nice work Geoff Marshall
Cheers 👍
It would have been better (in my mind) if the staircase had had green handrails on the outside walls and blue in the middle. ;)
Yes I think Chiswick Park station is a nice looking station
Thank you for the video Geoff it was very interesting. ❤
Hey Geoff can you please make videos comparing TfL to other countries city trains

I was wondering when you were going to do South Ealing/Northfields? They're both so close together that you could include both in the same video!
3:40 They should rename it Acton Green. Acton needs more stations 🤪.
Are you drunk? 😂
great episode!

I think he qualified it as being his favourite District line station, but I might have misheard. 😁😁

Geoffs doing re-runs now. The Geoff Gold channel
Great video Geoff
Hi Geoff, great series by the way
Please do Becontree there is a lot of good shops and parks in this area
That Acton Green roundel that you photographed, where was it?
Whenever I need to go Chiswick, I gets off at Turnham Green.
I thought I'd seen a version previously
tv star now,i see you on tv talking i think about the least used rail station, saying that it is used once a week saturday i think,
Passed this station alot on the piccadilly line before I started using the #purpletrain
Keep up the good work
marble arch is surely the busiest unconnected tube station?
I just passed here today!
I feel ive seen this one before .
I want the unlisted old video one
Nice Video
i’d love to see you do bermondsey or angel!!
