      Thanks 2 Minute Classroom, in a lot of cases that is absolutely correct. In fact, I left public school teaching for the very reason that so much of what we were made to do was not only unhelpful to students but often downright counterproductive. Hi! We have this paper that we're writing and we're comparing the internal organs of humans and rats. I don't know if I need to look for more sources but in my general understanding, both animals have a common ancestor. Are their internal organs automatically homologous because they have a common ancestor? Or do we have to compare each one? Do homologous and analogous structures work with internal organs? Thank you in advance.

    • @2MC
      @2MC  5 років тому

      Homologous and analogous structures could be internal. However, in the case of humans and rates, their internal organs very similar with only slight differences. Homologous structures have a similar structure and common ancestor, but have differing functions. The internal organs of rats and humans have the same functions. Heart pumps blood, stomach digests, lungs facilitate oxygen transport, etc.
      Rats and humans are both mammals, so they share some mammalian common ancestor that likely had many of the same or similar organs that functioned in similar ways.

  • @Lauren-se5bu
    @Lauren-se5bu 3 роки тому +1

    Thank you sir. One question though, homologous features are evidence of common ancestry - but in order to know if features are homologous or not, we must first know if they came from a common ancestor. Am I missing something here or does that not make sense? It seems almost like circular logic.

    • @evanwarns8023
      @evanwarns8023 3 роки тому

      Two features having similar structure is somewhat of a hint towards homology, but that must then be proven somehow, usually through genetic research. Think of a penguin flipper and a shark fin, both look pretty similar, and do the same job, so one might think they are homologous. But when we look at their genetic history we see that penguin flippers and shark fins didn't come from a common ancestor, so they are not homologous, but analogous.

  • @b991228

    Can you tell me why this is analogous?
    I don't think I'm understanding the question correctly.
    The majority of organisms in the plant, animal, and fungi kingdoms are multicellular. Based on the last common ancestor shared by all 3 of these groups, multicellularity would be considered which of type of characteristic?

    • @2MC
      @2MC  4 роки тому

      This would be homologous, because it has a similar origin.

    • @ADultingisHarD91011
      @ADultingisHarD91011 4 роки тому

      dang it I'm so confused! I put homologous and my professor said it was analogous. I thought I understood homologous and analogous wrong. Thanks for taking the time to answer though!

    • @2MC
      @2MC  4 роки тому +1

      @@ADultingisHarD91011 After reading the question over a few times, I can see that it is analogous, but also a very poorly written question.
      It's analogous because the last common ancestor of all three groups was not multicellular, but unicellular. The question alludes to this by saying "the majority of..." but not all, because there all single-cell fungi for example. Therefore, multicellularity would be a similar function.
      This question is poorly written because 1-the wording leads you to believe that the common ancestor was multicellular, and 2-It assumes you know whether the common ancestor was multicellular or single-celled, which you may or may not have discussed in class.
      Hopefully that helps.

    is the skull an analogous structure?

    • @2MC
      @2MC  4 роки тому

      It depends on which species your comparing and what you are defining as "skull" For example, the skulls of all mammals come from a common ancestor, and are therefore homologous.

    The wing of a penguin and the fin of a bird are the same structure and therefore are homologous, not analogous

    • @2MC
      @2MC  5 років тому +1

      They are not the same structure, the bone structure and evolution history are different, but they serve a similar function. Therefore, analogous.
