All in all Sills is the best Violetta I have ever seen. Also her Lucia. When I saw her Traviata in Boston she poured herself a glass of champagne while singing "vortici" !
Her studio recordings didn't do her justice. You had to experience her live in the theater.

Ms. Sills breathes life into this aria with the fireworks in her beautiful coloratura. A wonderful Violetta.

Even at this late date, Sills was still a consummate artist. I first saw her in the early-1970s, and every role she sang in New York after. I saw Sutherland during those same years - I can’t make comparisons because they each brought something magical to their performances. As another commenter pointed out, Sills’s recordings simply don’t capture her vocal presence in the theater.

I can’t believe that Beverly Sills
sang this on that Muppet Show episode segment Pigoletto with the
    opera pigs &
    Miss Piggy herself ❤
    Great episode with opera
What I remember from the episode there was some arias from Pigoletto the opera
    La Traviata
    Carmen
    Aida
    Ride of the Valkyries
    Rigoletto

In those days you hadn't made it until you were a guest on the Muppet Show, lol.

Опера бессмертна, Верди бессмертен, и все великие певцы и певицы также бессмертны и навеки запечатлены в наших сердцах!

Fantastic! Sills was absolutely stellar in her prime. I think in so many ways she is underrated. Dismissed as just another "American singer." I saw her toward the end of her career as Thais at the Met with Sherrill Milne's. She looked fantastic (I assume she had slimed down for the role). She had some difficulty vocally though. Still, it was wonderful to see her live and with Milne's. They had chemistry onstage. Wonderful to watch theatrically. I think Beverly Sills recording of "Marietta's lied" from DIE TOTE STADT is perhaps the finest recording of that devastatingly beautiful piece.

Amen to that and YES, Beverly's recording of Marietta's lied will always be my number 1 go-to recording, even though it doesn't have one single bit of coloratura it is her 'masterpiece'!

I'm 99% certain this is Tito Capobianco's (my father) 1976 production of Traviata at Wolf Trap.

Someone please tell me that last note? And if you can please, explain why Cecilia Bartoli did not sing it? I love Cecilia but I’m mystified.
Much Love and many thanks, Riccardo, Boston Massachusetts USofA.

Hello! From what i now, the note is not written in the score, so singers can, in a way, choose whether or not to sing the high note. I hope my English is correct. Have a good day!

I believe you mean the second-to-last note, which is a high Eb. As @joaovitorcalheiro3700 said, it isn't written in the score. However, sopranos have interpolated the Eb so often that nowadays it is expected. Sometimes I find it refreshing to hear versions where that note is left out. Singers who otherwise can sing and act the part of Violetta beautifully need not possess an Eb in their voice.

Could you credit the orchestra? Thank you.
