One Trail Bike To Rule Them All - Specialized Stumpjumper 15 Review | 2025 Pinkbike Field Test
Вставка

- The Stumpjumper is Specialized's now ubiquitous do-everything trail bike, with adjustability and adaptability integral to the bike's character. This year's update to the 15th iteration of the bike wasn't some massive overhaul, but more of a refinement, with very similar geometry to the outgoing Stumpjumper EVO, and the introduction of the Genie shock.

Excellent geek out with real riding expertise for the credibility. Always subjective stuff but your team does a great job of making these reviews/analysis useful for the consumer and enjoyable for the enthusiast to watch even if they aren't in the market for a new bike. Well done. BIG ALSO; nome of the content comes across as an "advitorial"...thank you for that.
I bought a 15 expert and it’s hands down the best bike i have ever had. It’s definitely faster both up and down while also feeling snappy.
The expert model has a three-position compression adjustment on the Genie and the Performance Elite, GRIP X2 front and weighs around 31 to 32 lbs.
That can make a significant difference compared to the alloy model. 😊
U can control the compression speeds on the upper end builds that have the 3 position compression adjustment. The one band plush feeling is very nice for wet, gnarly situations. One could run two bands for very much flow, bike park potentially even 3 depending ont he rider but this puts the shock feeling like every other shock out there.
Great review~!!!
I owned 2014 Stumpjumper Evo. I loved that bike. It's fatal flaw was the PF BB that creaked though. Bike ripped, on 26" wheels and only 27-28# too! I miss those lighter bikes at that travel. Shocktune was on point. Amazing how they are still chasing the perfect tune 10 years later. Had 2018 Enduro Pro, it was pretty good, shock tune was OK but not great ( 1 st gen Ohlins air..). I've owned ridden a few Demos and enjoyed them. Currently on a Kenevo SL which is also very good so far.
The Epic 8 Evo has grown into the old short travel trail bike range at a much lower weight ~27 lbs (Evo 8 Comp) vs 36 lbs (15 Alloy). This bike has to perform like a "big" bike to justify that package weight. I am glad it exisits, but I can't imagine I would like using this for all day epic trail rides or big climbing days.
Nice that you have some alloy bikes. Hard to get reviews on the trim.levels I actually.buy as everyone only wants to review the highest end carbon version. Kudos Pinkbike!
I like how they did this, i.e. the format and segments.
They seem very lukewarm about this bike.
yumyum MTB didn’t like it either
To be fair, yum yum didn’t say it was terrible, but that you should buy a ripmo or sb140 instead
Doesn’t surprise me, I have a 22 StumpyEvo and everything they said about this bike is exactly how it feels riding a previous model evo.
It is the bike for nobody in particular. Lol.
@@ViciouzCyclez The 2018 alloy modell was a sluggish one. It was too much for xc stuff and too less for rowdy stuff. This 130-140 mm travel area isn't the golden middleway between XC and enduro. If you want to pedal choose a marathon bike, if you are into jumps choose a 150 mm frame.
yeah, good review, very complete in the different aspects of it's atributes. From the outside looking in, It appears to be essentially the same bike it has been for years.
was that really the hero 4 in the first impressions? incredible if its still in use
Seems like a shame to have chosen the price point model for this test. The biggest complaints were the frame weight and the lack of compression adjustment in the shock. Had a higher spec bike had been tested, you could have had the lighter carbon frame and the Genie shock with comp adjustment. That would have been a better way to compare the Stumpy 15 against the other bikes in the test.
Yeah, the playing field should have been leveled more. What matters more to me than anything is the frame itself, if I throw a new shock and fork on it, how does it compare to another frame with the same fork/shock?
It doesn't need to be all leveled IMO. It is always nice to see how lower spec bikes compare to the high-end test bikes that get most of the attention, but most people won't buy.
Someone likes to pay premium for low tier bikes I see
You get what you pay for
My 130x140 Stumpjumper weighs 27 lbs and it just flies over the trails, especially on those 3-4 hour rides.
Personaly I would pick the "old" EVO over this one.
Cheers from Switzerland
36 pounds, damn. My legs are too weak for that.
It's the genie in the bottle?
Maybe if you rub the can you could ask the genie for a weight saving?!
Same.
145mm lift access bike!
Funny, my trance is about that and I can't say I've felt like it was the limiting factor on climbs lol. My friends Kona is like, 40 pounds and he's fine.
😺
Any chance you guys will do a field test with all the park/free ride bikes released this year? Status 170 DH, Propain Spindrift Park, Marin Quake, Ari Superior Peak, etc all priced similarly with similar intentions
awesome series.
Is the lockout closed on the fork? The lever pointing backwards is driving me bonkers…
😂
All this review sounds like my Commencal Al, which I love. Yeah, it is heavier than my CF Neuron when lifting it onto my rack, but you really don't notice it when you ride.
I really like that color.
Amazing! Specialized finally ditched the properitary stuff on other bikes, and they introduce a new one for this model.
From what I understand nothing internal on that shock is proprietary and a fox float service is the same.
I think that this channel has spoken about that segment at least once. "Is this a do all bike?". So Specialized looks like they have made a good one. Mainly I wanted to comment about the Genie Shock. Do I feel like it should be good out of the gate? Yes, I think a shock should be good out of the gate, but what exactly is good?
If and when people go to a shop to purchase these bikes, you can just make the purchase and just walk out of the store. What you should do, give the store techs about 5-15 minutes to go through an initial set up with you. If you ask nicely, they might even right down what they did. Psi is this for the front, it is this for the back. Its going to be up to you to go outside of mid settings with compression, rebound, or to adjust for what you like or where you are riding. So that is a tough question. Should people expect to have to tune? I don't think so, but they should expect to have that ability depending on how much they spent on the shock in question. The Genie seems like it does have adjustability built in.
Imagine that...a Spesh pivot bolts creaking and coming loose at the shock yoke and seatstays. I have busted off the heads on some over the years. "This is the bike for nobody." Lol.
Thanks for the review--I appreciate all the content that you folks create. I have a question about the geo of this new Stumpjumper: It looks to me that the way the high-low chip on the chain-stay is positioned will increase/decrease the rear center by about 5mm depending on the chip position. Specialized doesn't say anything about this in the marketing or in the geo charts. Did you (or could you) measure the effective rear center in the two positions? Thanks!
Henry running the fork pretty much closed...I agree on that. That fork and damper needs that if you weigh more than 2 Chihuahuas.
Henrys voice is so soft! Someone’s gotta tell him to speak a little louder. His words are quiet and blend together. I’ve thought this ever since his appearance on GMBN.
A video with Dario and Henry and you are complaining about Henry’s voice? That’s wild.
You’re weird dude
@@marklancaster2534 lol for real. That guy seems like he has no personality. PB really lacks good and engaging presenters.
I don't understand the complaint about the (Genie)shock and bike-feeling.
I mean, you are able to adjust it very soft to have a bigger bike feeling. And you are able to adjust it more snappy and playful.
What is the problem with that?
Sounds good to me. I'm able to setup the bike on demand...
And you have the linear feeling of a coil shock with progression at the end.
They said it felt sometimes like hanging up when the progression is reached.
What is it like with a coil when bottom out?
They actually have a point. The thing is that the Comp alloy and carbon models do not have the three-position compression adjustment on the Genie shock. You get them on the Expert models and up.
And in this scenario where the bike is pushed to the limit, you will reach a limit on the rear shock and even the Grip damper where you just can't dial in the dampers anymore and they become overwhelmed.
When you adjust it for the descent, it is worse for the uphill and vice versa. Combined with the heavy weight of the bike, it becomes even more noticeable.
If you use this bike in a more "normal" way and on trail systems, it will be less noticeable.
Just like the old EVO, this is a bike frame that really shines in the carbon versions in terms of absorbing trail chatter and reducing the weight of the bike significantly.
Cheers
It would be really interesting to see a redux review or at least comparison of the outgoing SJ Evo, not necessarily in comparison to this bike which seems to improve in a lot of ways, but specifically to many of the other bikes in this years field test, which seem to now at least on paper move more in the direction that bike was in some ways a trailblazer in; especially since, it seems that there a lot of critiques of this years bikes not quite delivering in the ways you expected (Ibis + Rocky come to mind) it seems that we generally assume that new iterations of bikes are always an improvement, but is that always the case?
Good work doing the talk n' ride! 🔥 I was curious how my review would compare! 🤔
What about the comparison to other similar bikes like the CANYON Neuron? I'm about to order the Neuron 7 AL because the geometry is trail but modern, and the specs are just up there (FOX 34 GRIP, XT everywhere)
I like mountain bike very much.
Mountain bike likes you too.
Based on this review. not on my list. Cheers for saving me from trying it.
Thanks for the impressions and insight. But the price, $4500 for the low end? That is crazy
Buy a heavily discounted bike or mail order imo
Idk what people are smoking thinking that a wireless drivetrain is a smart idea.. and now all the carbon frames can’t take internal cable routing?
We cannot afford to FIX and replace this junk and now they are designing bikes with no other choice. Fail.
If it worked better than Shimano cable actuated I'd at least understand the tradeoff. But it's heavier, shifts worse or at least not better, and costs more.
Noone holds you back to route the cable outside. There are glued cable holders available. :P
@@soy_lechelol SRAM AXS stuff is light years ahead of Shimano shift quality what are you on. Shimano is great if you like your shifts to feel like a big CLONK
It would be very helpful to us if you guys would compare this bike more to many other bikes when you talk about it. A metric ranking system would be much more helpful. Or even rated per category out of the number of bikes tested. Feelings are great but numbers and facts don't lie.
They dont want to because they dont want to show its the worst.. excpect actual honesty just from smalle content creators
You shouldn't sleep on the updated trance x, just had the opportunity to try one, it shows they improved the leverage curve + it has all these adjustments only 2% of buyers will play with.
How does it ride different from the 2023 model?
Giant? Buts it’s a Giant….
I think Specialized blew it. They should have just kept making the 150/160mm travel Stumpy Evo which was probably the best trailbike Specialized ever made. If it ain't broke. don't fix it!
This is essentially the evo, with first dibs on the shock technology. Fox is releasing the shock for aftermarket in a few years. The idea is that the midstroke is so good that you don't need the extra travel.
My stumpy 15 is 29 lbs with a 38 upfront… I guess that metal is heavy?
Dario looking to hit apexes and watching the corner exit while chatting with Henry.
So how about that Status 140?
Might as well go for that bike. 36 lbs for the stumpjumper is crazy.
Right, carbon Stumpy is one thing but for alloy the Status models dump on this rig both in weight and overall value.
@@ericbeech2652 yeah it's crazy my Status 160 is lighter than this.
Right side guys voice is almost the same as Chris Griffin's played by Seth Greene :D
I guess the real question is... How does this bike ride with the cheapest Xfusion shock model? Or similarly any shock but the genie? Also it comes in coil models, so given its 'designed around the genie' does that mean the coil is harsher than normal... Or even softer than normal? Is sprindex basically mandatory then, despite not being stock?
It's definitely troubling when the only kinda new and fun thing the bike offers is being considered to not have a good middle ground. It's either too soft with less tokens or too harsh with more tokens. Meanwhile I bet all the other bikes on test are getting on fine with their bog standard shocks. Meh
If this is the best price amongst tested bikes, guess I'd better give up on a new bike this decade
say whatever, that shock can't be bought separately, and it would most likely feel bad on most bikes, it's not just a tune, it's a different shock, so despite being a "normal"mount and size, it's still proprietary.
before watching it all - this is the replacement for the EVO really and with the Genie, they really built a bike almost as capable as their renound enduro for descents while still being a good decent climber, albeit heavy af. Nothing wrong with FSR as long as the shock is tuned with the right anti-squat/rise.
For me, my ideal trail bike would be the Druid (even the V1) - that said, wish these boutiques would be tested along side the big names: Forbidden, Evil, Pivot
edit
after watching the video, it is interesting how it ramps up super fast at the end and how its not quite a "plow" bike but also not a traditional poppy trail bike neither. As other comments mention, chances are HSC/LSC in the higher end models on the shock could make all the tuning differences other than just the volume spacer.
I'm still wondering why Specialized discontinued the EVO and replaced it with the 15?
Better all around geo
To make room for a revised Enduro.
To sell more bikes to make more money? How is this a question
@@lukelavine3244 The geo numbers are pretty close to the "old" Evo. Chainstays are a bit shorter now.
Gotta keep making changes to try and sell more bikes
I don't know how they ride with their shirts flapping around. I don't wear Lycra but prefer tighter fitting clothing when riding.
For a slow mo Hollywood effect 😝
Why alloy in this test? Don't use cabling at the reasoning
Dream bike
If ur dream bike is a 16,5 kg trail bike.. stop dreaming
dream bigger lol.
Need to review Merida 140
The lowest spec for this bike is 3k usd. They are out of their mind, I don't know why anyone would choose this bike if not for brand loyalty.
I have the Specialized Status 140.
MX wheels, Fox suspension, 1x12 Shimano and weighs 36 lbs.
I never ride it.
36 lbs. is just too heavy for a MTB.
My 130x140 Stumpjumper weighs 27 pounds.
I ride it every day, even commute on it. 😁
@ my 2013 SC Tallboy LTC weighs 29. That’s what I ride all the time.
What year is your SJ?
The iPhone of bikes
Initial impressions were it was soft and deep in the travel. Fork was almost at complete "lock out" too?? Weird
Am I the only one who thinks they hear bats squeaking in video?
Anytime there is a proprietary component on a bike, watch out. Specialized is known for this. Anyone remember the brain?
Quiver killer... Say it 🤣🤣🤣
They should have compared the carbon version of this bike as most of the other bikes are carbon.
New Epic Evo has plenty of travel. About 10lbs. lighter too
That clickbait title, well played my dudes...
You wish spech.
😂
Long term test with a different shock
Why pay for this bike w an expensive, first year shock that is oem, unless I'm missing something?.... and mandatory e-shifting, unless you want to zip tie cables to your bike?
it's such minimal looking bike yet it is so heavy. where's all that weight hiding?
Oooof, 36 lbs?!? That is so heavy, I can't recommend this to my beginner friends who will hate the climbs so much and quit mountain biking.
Damn that's heavy, 16.7kg with pedals! that's a few hundred grams heavier than my brothers trek slash 7 in a size XL, I thought this was supposed to be a trail bike?
Realistically, you should carry a repair kit in the downtube and a full water bottle on top of it.
So yes, it is definitely too heavy for its purpose.
The Carbon Comp is 1 kg less alone, and the Expert models are around 14.5 kg without pedals.
Those seem to be more in line in terms of weight travel range.
@@IIISentorIII And both of those models are very expensive, plus you can't even run a cable derailleur, unless you run some ugly hack cable tying it to the frame.
@benjy288 Yeah, I've owned the Stumpjumper Expert 130x140mm for almost two years now and have customized it. It's 12.2 kg right now. I did buy it on a super sale for around 3600 Euros. In Swiss francs, that's even around 200.- less. I did order it to my German package address and didn't even pay the ~600.- import fees this way when I accidentally assembled it in Germany and rode over the border. 😉😁
The new Stumpy 15 Expert is now 8'000 Euros here, which is absolutely bonkers if you ask me.😊
Cheers
@@IIISentorIII Is that 12.2kg without pedals? how did you get it that light? carbon parts? I have a merida one twenty 3000 that has a carbon main frame and alloy rear triangle, and I've managed to get it down to 13.1kg with pedals, but I have all alloy parts, including dh rated spank spike race 33 rims, but I don't have a dropper post either cause I can get more drop without one.
@benjy288 Yes, this is without the pedals. The flat pedals add 300 grams, so it's 12.5 kilograms in total. I've replaced everything with carbon parts over the last ~2 years. I use an Elitewheels pro 36 carbon wheelset (550 euros on Black Friday) at 1.48 kilograms in total.
My tires are also not very aggressive. Fast trak t5 in the rear at 670 grams and Ground control t7 front at 850 grams.
Basically, if I replace something that wears out, I replace it with something lighter if I see a deal.
It's not my goal to go ultralight; it still needs to perform in the Swiss Mountains. 😅
My brother owns a custom-built Scott spark RC 900 Ultimate TR Bike 120x130mm that is 10.2 kg without pedals but also way more expensive, even though he got it with a 30% discount originally. 😉
Honestly, slightly over 13 kg is probably the sweet spot for most bikes.
Replacing a Deore cassette if it's worn with an SLX or XT can also save you some 200 grams.
That Merida is a sweet-looking bike!
That's a weird thing about Fox climb switches. They work the wrong way. And accidental hit with the knee shouldn't switch the climb mode on, it should switch it off. I had an old Jeffsy with the DPS that worked the same way. Ended up removing the climb switch.
Day 2 of asking when is the Hawk Tuah Flat video coming out 🫡
Pinkbike please don't jump on the hawk tuah band wagon
A little puzzled by having the alloy version on this test. Think most of us here were looking for the carbon version to compare to all the other reviews on the tube. Would also like it if they had touched on running the bike with 160mm fork, since there is a version of that available from the manufacturer. Left wanting a bit more...
It sounded like you guys were at great pains not to be too critical of Specialized. Hmmm, were the sponsorship $$$s colouring your judgement? Yes, it felt like it.
I literally went from "nice" to "oh hell no!" right after seeing the proprietary shock. 😂
Did i am the only one, who can't understand Henry 50% of the time?
The trail bike that really does it all is the Orbea Occam LT
It’s simply the best
That rim at 5:05 is not looking good!
😅
The geek out is fine but you need at least one guy with a personality to make this video worth watching sorry guys
PB has a 1:20 ratio of personality to dull hosts.
36 lbs, wtf....nice bike bike though, why so heavy? I don't get it, the "trail" bikes are as heavy as an enduro bike and probably close to a downhill bike. if you look at the weights an XC bike is what 25-28lbs, a trail bike should be around 27-30lbs enduro 30+. I wasn't one for complaining about a bikes weight but 36lbs seems ridiculous for a bike in 2024.
Presenters are so boring to watch!
I’m still choked over the whole Cafe Roubaix thing with Specialized. I get they smoothed it over in the end but that’s them in a nutshell.
dang $4,500 is a "cheap" bike 😬
You can easily save 50.- by skipping the coffee in the shop.
Since specialized and outside are both partners controlling Pinkbike among others, it’s no surprise that Pinkbike continues to stroke the schlong of specialized.
2019 stumpjumper carbon comp was a dog of a bike .. my 3Rd specialized.. never buying specialized again
I like the Giant Trance out of the big 3
I hear the real wheel gets hung up a lot..
You got to be kidding me. 36 lb. What's size? They expect to sell this bike? What a joke
S4, would you believe that even the insanely expensive $12,000 s-works model still weighs 14kg with pedals
Specialized Marketing: “it weights as a Levo SL but it costs half the price. Keep innovating”😬😂😂😂
They have to be nice to the bike in this review so they can give it the BOY award in 1 month.
Bring back htf
Wooo more proprietary suspension garbage that will be unserviceable in 5 years!
Hahahaha if they can sell thousands of these they are marketing geniuses 😂 this is a bike from the past. What happened to the stump jumper being a boundary pusher?? This is the kind of safe bike they make when our economy is in the toilet Ei: The 2008-2009 Stumpy/Enduro
They gotta fire Henry is so bad
genie is such BS!
Be careful what you wish for.
relegate henry to camera or boom duty. it's painful listening to him waffle.
Specialized is a very mid manufacturer and has no really good bikes unless you account a 20 k race bike made just for Loic Bruni
Facts
Who would you go for instead?
@@CabbagePatchkid-r8e if money is no issue and the bikes suit you yeti and pivot have the best quality and characteristics from the bikes I've tried. I ride enduro, a trek slash and a scott ransom are great bikes too. Hard to beat pivot/yeti quality tbh, I used to think they are charging insane prices but 5 k for this bs or a few more for an actual quality bike is a no-brainer
Raaw also has great bikes for your buck. Commencals are fun if you like a flexy-feely frame but they charge too much for new bikes like almost everyone
Their XC bikes were top of the line for long years. They can't really find themselves since downcountry bikes have earned their own category. We can't blame them though, most companies had major issues/cutbacks and the future is rather dark...
So it sounds this bike is too finicky which means forget it! Look for a different bike.
Reviewing the alloy version of this bike seems like a missed opportunity.
There is not an alloy version released yet.
Came to check for all the bumbling down the trail comments..
Yummy Yum didn’t like it either
Almost pulled the trigger on this but went with an ebike because I’m lazy 😂
Bout the same weight so you made a solid choice... (jk)
