It's not really an open ending. The FL leaves and doesn't go back. The ML does his research, but it's too late. The ML gets into an accident, but there is no one, especially the FL, to save him. It's only open if he survives. After what the FL goes thru, you hope he doesn't survive. My only question is if he ever got that family heirloom bracelet back from the mistress? It's not like he'll have any kids if he survives. What a douche.
