I'm a maintenance guy, I have sailed but I don't have a boat, but your vids are not just fascinating but give me loads of tips for other applications. You are so proffesional, thank you for so many great tips, I love watching your films, bless you both on your future adventures. Think you're both lovely. Great to share your lives, so again, thank you brilliant people for doing this not only for yourselves but fot us as well.
Mirool is going to be like a brand new boat soon ! Last year it was an engine rebuild, new fuel system, new solar panels and a new windlass plus some osmosis repairs etc and now the rest of the boat is getting a complete overhaul ! I like your methodical approach to doing all that work and you always do it with a smile, I don't think I've ever heard either of you grumbling or complaining about anything you have had to deal with ! That's why this channel is one of my favourites ! Cheers guys, looking forward to seeing the end result !
IF yall ultimately decide to explore other parts of the world AND, as part of that decision, sell Marool . . . some lucky buyer is gonna have one hell of a 50-year-old boat! Best of luck to ya next year. Looking forward to the future vids.
Very nice enjoyed the explanation of your repairs as well as a demonstration of the process. You bringing her back from all those years and giving another lease on life. Thanks to both of you.
Why do people cut holes and not realise the potential issues? The cockpit is going to be better and stronger than it was. Just wondered where the cockpit floor drains to? It looks like it could contain over a cubic metre of water? Just wondered where the drains are and how big they are/how quick it would drain? We have probably missed something. 😉. Have a very Happy Christmas and a great New Year. Sail Safe Guys, Ant, Cid & the pooch crew.
Aye m8’s, must be a very good feeling of solidity to have all this done. To really go over all sorts of small bits that otherwise can make a lot of trouble. 🛠️
Thank you for all the work it takes to produce this interesting and fun videos. Three years and I still look for them each week. Still learning, still laughing and still double jealous. Bless you both and fair winds. May the wind lift you to your dreams as you have lifted my closer to mine. God bless. ~Bambruski
The refit series has prompted me to revisit some of your early videos and especially your time in the Kimberly region. That‘s when I first started following you and even though I‘ve watched them before, it’s still like watching for the first time. Thanks for the memories ❤️💙
Watching 'Freerange sailing'...is pure relaxation. Best half hour of the week. Oh! Envy. When I get back into Australia for my next three month walkabout, if you guys need provisions or a land rest, I'm going to make a port-of-call, and buy you guys, breakfast, lunch and dinner...With a lot of good conversation. Thanks for another informative episode.
Every boat I have ever owned has A) Been cheap, B) Been a victim of ignorant owners making modifications or repairs they had no business making, and C) Been worth a great deal more than I paid for them once I was done getting everything correct again. It is refreshing to see you working in a way that guarantees the future life of this fine boat. The quickest way to kill a boat is it sell it to an idiot and give him a screw gun, sawsall, and some bathroom silicone.
Ignorant owners. You should see some of the rubbish done by so called qualified tradies. When your wife evicts them from your boat, you know they are bad.
So enjoyable watching a craftsman at work. Thank you for the insight into these repairs you are doing. Great job on the video as well. The noise in the background just ads to the flavor.
Love your beautiful and meticulous boat repairs. Being a mediocre woodworker/builder, have to admire your precision and ability to work well together. You guys are the best!
Your attention to detail has again, saved my sanity! I suffered Myer, a mother stroke over these past few weeks and the famuliriity of your subject matter has kept me jupp me sevmi normally...thank yipou bo other
You are basically going to have a new boat once your done lol. Looks very good so far and I love how you adapt and change to better techniques as you learn. Oh and thanks for teaching us, I personally appreciate the heck out of it. When I was young about 12 or so my father had bought a 32 foot catamaran motor hull. It was just a hull. We put in the engines, wiring, design dash, gas tanks, and seats and had them built. We installed everything on the boat including the three outboards on the back. No fiber glassing though but we did cut the glass and sealed the ends we cut. We got the whole thing up and going in one winter working after school and after his work. It was really awesome. The funny part of this story is my Uncle, his brother drove all the way to Florida (we live on Lake Erie in Ohio in Cleveland) and drove back with the hull full of water lol. My uncle took my dad's suburban down and it towed the boat with the water all the way back through mountain passes and to Cleveland without and issues. We all went to the street to look at the new hull. My dad was like what the heck is up with the massive sag in the trailer. He pulled the rear drain plug and it drained for like an hour lol. My uncle was pretty embarrassed. He got plenty of joshing during holiday meals that year for sure.
Go gently and keep it flat! We used a 150mm sander, 60 grit and a vacuum. Worked well and no mess. We scraped the flakey stuff of first with a tungsten scraper and the vacuum to speed things up.
@@FreeRangeLiving I was wondering how aggressive that is, I don't want to remove the barrier coat. The antifoul is not that thick, but it is flaky in spots and built up in other areas. Thanks for the advice.
Grinders and attachments sure have come a long way to speed up and allow for more professional looking finish work. Must feel satisfying, hole filling.
Very good video again, thanks guys! I guess my first thought of draining the cockpit under the winch would've been a pipe going all the way to the toerail and possibly a one way valve, as simple as a flap on the outside, like you can find on the transom exhaust outlets. But I'm sure Troy has considered that as well and found the split setup better. Greets and happy holidays from hotel quarantine in Brisy!
The split achieves a few things. It avoids having to have anything screwed outboard which may catch in berthing and costs money. If a valve fails/ falls off, each roll under would pressure jet up into the cockpit. Also, the toerail hole can be used to take a soft shackle and block for extra rigging possibilities (spinnaker hauler etc.) Also, a tube all the way would trap water to its aft and would need an extra hole for drainage anyway.
Hi from the UK - I love the "4 inch spoke shave" remark brilliant!! - Have Peaceful Christmas and a Happy and Prosperous New Year to you both - Best wishes Clay.
A good one also is to thicken with a small amount of cabassol ect. into the first brushed on layer to fix the glass cloth too as it sticks to the roughen surface better an is great for vertical and overhead surfaces as it helps the wetted cloth from peeling off, plus giving more strength.
Dying to see the final product, your attention to detail is inspiring. Merry Christmas and Happy New Year to you both and all that follow this channel.
It's gonna be a beautiful 2021. I can feel it. Wishing you Aussies the best new year with a beautiful boat. No one can possibly understand what it takes to do this level of rebuild unless they did it themselves. I am absorbing many of your tips. Thanks from San Francisco. Happy New Years...
Wishing you both also a Merry Christmas and looking forward to your travels soon when the boat is ready again for the high seas again. Happy travels. Doug
I have just bought my 3rd 20lt lot of west epoxy and it is just the best and most versatile epoxy system , especially when using it with timber or ply . Thanks again , you have made my refit soooo much easier and faster.
And from across the ditch, thank you for your channel guys. Have a great Christmas and let's hope that 2021 is going to be a fantastic year for us all. Take care.
About through hull fittings and holes in boats, 100% agree. Every hole through the hull of our boat has PVC pipe epoxied in place and coved outside and inside - zero chance of any water ingress into the timbers. 26 years later the only rot I've found is in two places, so far: Around the front hatch where the coving epoxy has shrunk and cracked and water has filled the crack and rotted under the epoxy and fibreglass. I need to rework that but I'll probably drown it in silicone in the mean time to stop the rain and spray getting into the forward bunks. And in the cockpit dad put a teak thigh pad around the perimeter and behind it he made some hand laminated plywood up to support the solid teak curve with grain not ideally angled and make it strong. But he didn't put a drip edge around that teak and the water ran down, turned under, and soaked/wicked up into that wood and rotted it out from below! Incredible. The epoxy from the home made plywood is still there looking a lot like honeycomb and you can see the timber further up still intact at least sort of. The entire rest of the boat is sound :-)
Ha ha, and then you went and did exactly the same thing as I started that comment with on the toe rail hole. Took me a second to realise why you didn't put one piece all the way through: don't want to form a dam for water running down the deck. Good stuff, nicely done. :-)
Thanks so much for sharing. Been watching you two for a couple of years now and love every thing you share. Love watching a you repair the boat and of course the adventures you enjoy while your sailing. Merry Christmas .
Merry Christmas to you both Troy and Pascy! Looking forward the maiden voyage (again) of the new and improved MIROOL! Take care both of you and God bless!
Merry Christmas, with all the repairs to the cockpit, did you consider simply cutting the old one out, making a mold and building a new part with epoxy, foam and glass.
When I need to pull of the toe rails on my boat I am going to giving you a call. Weather is looking good for a Christmas eve escape. So if all good New year, New state, pus lots of anchorages in the outer reef. Sail safe, have a ripper Christmas, New Years etc.

Happy Christmas lovlies, hope you have an amazing time.
Why is it so much more satisfying watching other people work on their boats than working on my own : )
I work for a yacht management company in the UK and admire the thorough working practices.
Can't wait to see her on the water again.

I have no idea how to describe it, but your videos are captivatingly interesting. Don't lose the recipe. Happy Christmas.
I know, right! I have no idea what they are talking about 90% of the time, but I am glued to the screen. Any other channel I would fast forward!😂
It must be very satisfying to know that you have made all these improvements to your boat. Living, sailing, and safety, all as good as it gets.

No sale. All sail.
Much like my great grandfather's hammer. Replaced the head twice and the handle four times. It's just as good as the day he bought it, if not better.
@@FreeRangeLiving Who's to say you cant sail away from your island continent in Marool anyway. People have circumnavigated in as much.
Beautiful
Very nice enjoyed the explanation of your repairs as well as a demonstration of the process. You bringing her back from all those years and giving another lease on life. Thanks to both of you.
I would be surprised if there was ever a more in-depth refit. Impressive!
look up Columbia 29 refit in the rocky mountains, talk about in-depth!
I think Troy and Pascal are doing a marvelous job on Marool...but... since you asked you should also check out Mads extensive work on sail life!
Sooooo much work! It will be worth it in the end.

We rebuilt (and filmed) those drains in the floor in the Townsville refit series. They work well.

The pilot berth - way berth - looks really comfy. Good one!
Really, really looking forward to the completed / finished / back in the water and off sailing - and more of Pascale’s mouth watering cooking 😊👍🎅🎄🎉
