What amazes me most with this man is not just his welding skills and his knowledge of strengths and structure but also that he has the ability to clearly explain what he is doing and why he is doing it. Great work my friend. He always explains his thinking throughout the process so others learn not just how to do the job but also how to THINK about it. Once again, AMAZING, keep up the good work.

I’m 75 and was a pipe welder as a young man. I enjoy a day when I just had my head down burning wire (stick). The day went fast. I had to add more to my comment after seeing it run wow !! Great job a real craftsman.

When I was working we’d have called you a genuine old boy.
Over my years in heavy engineering I’ve worked among some wonderful old tradesmen & learnt a lot if they found you willing, as you obviously were Alastair. Nothing better than a willing apprentice in my book.
Never made a mistake, never done a job.
I use to ponder sometimes when a thing became ‘ beyond economic repair?’ BER.
Never ceases to amaze me what can be done. ££££?
An old boss gave me two pointers, lol.
‘ I want reasons why you can not reasons why you can’t & there are no problems only solutions!’ Always stood me in good stead when someone said; ‘ can you just?’
I’d love to see a cordless flux cored mig set up, that’d be something, lol.
    Made me chuckle!
Imagine stick welding that with 7018’s & keeping the packets. lol.
Keep up the good work, I don’t miss the grinding one bit, so fully appreciate your achievements.
Thanks for reviving good memories as a fitter of my years in marine engineering & the ol steam work. Hard & heavy but satisfying.👍

Thanks guy. really liked the vids. I started in the NAVY as a welder retired then worked at PEARL HARBOR 28 years. Welding everything, even bicycle frames to submarine hulls. As you mentioned in one of your vids your elbows. I know what you are saying, knees, lower back ect. you know but the satisfaction I got from doing something that very few people on this earth can do was something. Now it really hurts so much that are trade and trades really is not passed on to young men or even women for the future. Just as Electricians, Plumbers, Machinists we are in a bad place. Thanks Again God Bless

Matey for various reasons I'm 38 years old and missed out on the computer diagnostics with regards to diesel fitting, however I learnt from my dad old school ways and it's not massive money but I'm happy with 40k a year and too my own surprise people are so desperate because even the basic engineering slash mechanics knowledge isn't there. No way near what you do but I've told my dad at 80 years old and we will be sitting down with a drink to watch theese 3 videos xmas day. And he will be in tears saying 'at least somebody still knows this shit!' . He was born in a war. You are an insperation to myself at 38. You are a final belief in my 80 year old man. Lots of love from Manchester people xxx

There can't be many companies with the abilities that your own has - it's specialised stuff and very impressive to see.
The mention of a hot crusher from a days work: I blagged an opencast site visit and took my young son along. Staff fussed over him and made the day awesome for us. At one point, they stopped a huge face shovel for us so that I could get his photo taken stood in front of the bucket. The manager warned him not to touch the bucket as it would be hot from extracting rock for the dump trucks.

This is the best UA-cam content that I've found in a long while. I love the start (broken machine) to finish (machine back to work) with all the repair steps in between.
I'm a B-pressure welder in Alberta, Canada. Most of the work I do (oilfield) is still with stick welding. Your videos really highlighted how much more productive welding with wire is.
I'm impressed with how you took this whole project and broke it down into steps. Even the "little" steps were huge and daunting.
I look forward to more content like this in the future. Keep up the good work, and thank you!

After watching three hours of you fix this big rock cruncher I was indeed nervous that the machine wouldn't be able to take the incredible stresses. But as I watched until the end, it was clear top me that you are, absolutely, the stellar welder that I thought you were! Now I wonder if the stresses are great enough to ever break it again! Thanks for all of the content you present and the professionalism you show in all of your videos!

I liked the use of the angle iron as a guide for the cutting. I cant believe I'd never seen that used. I see my Texas friend weighed in on your work also. He covers the south, I "cover" the Midwest in Illinois and our UTube friend Gregg "OnFireWelding"s got the west coast covered. You could spend quite a "holiday" just visiting us. I could get you a tour of the CAT Decatur Plant where the 797 "super" truck is fabed. Nine monster steel castings to form the frame.
I do believe you welded the two left top blocks at least twice or ????
An amazing process. I watched another of a young man who built-"rebuilt" a jaw crusher a few months ago. I think it was for his personal property project.

Remember the preheating used to do my head in. I was a fitter not welder but enjoyed that part of my life. How about Submariners? I'm a retired US Navy Career Submariner. Served on four nuclear submarines with lots of Shipyard Time. I retired and worked on the same Subs I served on. Visited General Dynamics Shipyard more times than I like to admit where they build the SSN-688 Class, Seawolf Class SSN-21 the New Virgina Class SSN-774 Subs. Closely worked with Portsmouth New Hampshire Shipyard for Submarine Repairs and Overhauls. I've seen some very complex Submarine hull and structural repairs and manufacturing processes. Seeing Submarines built from start to finish at the Groton Electric Boat SY is AMAZING! Watching welders complete a 12 foot hull cut on a dry docked submarine pressure hull is a once in a lifetime experience. Everything is documented and controlled. The hull plate beveling, fit up, welding, preheat and cool down is painstakingly exact and very controlled and well documented. yep, Massive heat strips tacked all around the weld repair area for days at a time. Then there's the weld X Ray process after all is done. After all that we get to take the Submarine down to test death to test it all out. Nothing like Trial By Fire! You have to trust your Nuclear Welders! I cant even begin to explain the processes that is involve the documentation, prep, testing, controls and precision that goes into the welding and brazing that goes into the Nuclear Reactor Plant Systems. Thats a whole different world! . Question? Why don't you use something like those electric heat pads/strips for your pre heat processes on those BIG projects? Im VERY IMPRESSED with the work that you do. Well Done!

3 hours of awesome content . Very worthy of being a pivotal number in the playlist . Well done on reaching 500 that's really being dedicated to your interest in capturing great subjects to share . Really loved this 1 and brilliant you could get the footage of it actually working and doing what it does best . I can only guess how chuffed you are that all the hard work behind the scenes on this one paid off as you said in the first video you had all the organizing to do from collecting to delivery including the weld compatibility testing and every thing in between . A long winded job for you of many many hours of prep and preheating before the many hours of actually welding . Loving the engineering videos and obviously these big projects the plant repairs are my personal favourites as it shows how easy something can get broken regardless of size . As I.C weld once said thanks to the idiot operators they keep him in work repairing their mistakes ..many thanks for sharing this project and someone tell the guy in the comments your Irish not Scottish

A very challenging problem to put it mildly , the shear size and weight alone made it seem impossible . Getting information on the best way forward was brilliant and correct , the shear mental battle of taking on this project is truly exceptional . Many would have said no , but you have proved it can be done . A small tip the wire feeder , the Brass bushes in the rotating gear are to soft , try getting them machined out and re bushed with a material like Phosphor Bronze they will last a lot longer .

This reminds me of my old job. Watching this I can miss it, but I don't really regret leaving it to instead do structural engineering and cad.
The smell of welding and grinding discs makes me nostalgic.
    Great job Allistair. Impressive repair.

Some job lad! Epic work gone in to fixing that jaw. You should be very proud.
Great to see this kind of heavy engineering still happening in Ireland 🇮🇪

I loved watching all three videos on this project. I love rock crushers, welding, machining, etc. I used to be a heat treater for bushings, cutters, and many other parts for oil drillers. I also heat treated parts for tools and many other items. You should do more videos on these rock crushers, in my opinion.

Great to watch part 3 of this epic repair and re furb!
Your joy and satisfaction in completion of this monumental task is quite evident. Quite hypnotic watching the beast in action making short work of a seemingly endless flow of boulders. I hope you had a few days off after this on Allistair! 👍👏🍺🍺
