    In A Fistful of Vinyl's first interview sequel, Laura Jane Grace sits down to discuss punk, connections with humanity, humor of the massively corny variety, The Mountain Goats, signature instruments, chord shapes, and personal growth. Alec also learns a lesson in proper terminology and etiquette. Filmed live at the famous Troubadour in Los Angeles.

    Great interview! Ya'll got so much interesting stuff out of Laura's head. The part about the tattoo artist blacking out her arm pretty much against her will was horrifying, and her relationship with her instruments is really sweet.
    As a trans girl I have to comment on the part where Alec deadnames Laura by mistake. It was 'I want to die' awkward for a second but the recovery was really well done. It's clear he didn't understand the implication of what he was saying and respects her enough to immediately be bothered by his having said it, then he composes himself enough to keep the interview flowing having released the emotional tension. I think that would have sunk him if he actually sucked at interviewing :)

      Laura's a saint, and yes, Alec recovered well, but it's 2019, he should know better, and should have phrased that question differently.

    The cadence to the lyrics, I still have such a hard time singing along to Against Me!'s songs because of how creative Laura is with this. It's like the magic of listening to a song for the first time every single time.

    Good interview. I get growing out of that black and white youthful way of seeing the world but seems it's more privilege that let's you not 'care' about politics as much. Definitely not saying against me is rich but I would say they're a step above working class.

    I like that she always talks back against people trying to define her music or put an agenda on it. Its still happening to her like crazy, shes hugely used for agendas, but I respect that she recognizes that and is honest abt it. Shes also an incredible musician, she has a certain magnetism that draws u in. I have the hugest crush on her. Saying that tho, I think Laura was really rude to Alec when he supposedly "Deadnamed" her. He didnt even deadname her, he said it like "When you were __Thomas James Gabel___, was it diff making music, ect" (or something to tht effect). Because she USED to be Tom. Its not like it didnt happen. And then Alec stopped himself and apologized. And she didnt even say "Its ok dont worry abt it u didnt know", and then she got more rude to him in the interview. Wow. I lost a lot of respect for her right there. Just because youre trans gives u the right to dictate what other people can say or think or not? You dont just get to invent new trendy words and pronouns AND expect everyone to call u them, Or even to KNOW what u personally want to be called. And you always say, "Well just ask us". but then when he does she gets all pissy and assumes he even knows what deadnaming is, or thats its considered rude to some ppl. What a bitch. Makes me wanna Deadname the shit out of her. WTF has happened to the PUNK scene these days?? It used to be about being different, and celebrating all our differences, and helping the underdog and against the corrupt establishment, and NOT being PC, (just be honest) , and now its become this weird monstrosity of a scene where 'If you dont think exactly like me you cant sit with us", (all while pretending that THEIR the outcasts, when they constantly belittle people and kick them out of their "communitys"). And before anyone says it, it has nothing to do with "being against trans people", its abt being against self righteous assholes who expect everyone to be like them.

    • @obnoxiousalien
      @obnoxiousalien 3 роки тому +2

      Bitch are you even trans? Do you know how painful it is to be dead named? I assume not since you even mention you would dead name her for "being rude". She literally explained why she didn't like the question phrased that way, because she's always been herself, she wasn't a different person. We just saw her as that person because we didn't know, but she always knew who she was. It's exhausting that trans people are expected to be saints who should hide their pain if someone says hurtful things. If she was upset by it, it's her right to be so. And to be honest she continued the interview very normally? I don't even get what you're saying. You're the one who's rude here.

    • @missmaynard2310
      @missmaynard2310 3 роки тому +4

      Deadnaming People Is Transphobic. You’re Denying Someone’s Identity And Purposely Skewing Other People’s Perception Of Someone’s Identity Which Isn’t Only Rude, But Also Super Dangerous Considering We’re Constantly At Risk Of Being Assaulted, Abused And Killed - Sincerely A Trans Woman.

    • @swamppiratesco
      @swamppiratesco 2 роки тому

      Being defensive is normal when you're triggered and its a very direct trigger for a trans person to be deadnamed, but also to ask questions that come from a transphobic or ignorant place which he inadvertently did. I don't think she was being a bitch actually, I think watching the moment brings out our own feelings of discomfort and the first time I watched it I would say she might have been a little defensive and kind of annoyed because this happens all the time. But being misunderstood in that way creates a pretty instant fear response in many people, and who among us hasn't gotten defensive when we're scared or uncomfortable? And when I watch it again a second time, Laura actually seems gracious and professionals and continues with what was already a direct and candid interview.
      But you have some fuckin issues dude, get help. Your own transphobia was brought out by witnessing HIS transphobia, so rushing to his defense is just a sign of your own shit. Get help or get over it, stop attacking trans women cause you have personal problems.
