  • This isnt exactly a "How-to" but we wanted to explain how and why we decided to install limb risers on our rig. We don't expect to be moving huge limbs out of our way or breaking trails but we wanted a little more protection from small limbs smacking our windshield.

Question: What is your reason for installing the limb risers so far inside the hood? Wouldn't they work better on the fender? Or could you then not open the hood? I really like that you put shrink tubing over the press fittings and have a turn-buckle to adjust tension.

+Rob “MtnGoatX” The reason we decided to bring the limb risers so close together on the hood was both for strength and cosmetics. Our hood has contours on it that we thought would be a stronger point of termination. So the limb risers are both stronger and look good =) The fender was our first choice but our hood wouldn't open without removing the limb risers and that would get annoying.
      Glad you like them!

A bumper might be a better attachment point and provide protection to your vehicle, if you are really going to try to make the e53 work off road...

I agree, we just don't have a good bumper yet. These have saved our windshield several times so they are doing their interim job =) Thank you for the comment!

X5 Overland I see, has the hood stayed in good shape?
I have a Land Cruiser and want to add some limb risers but I have a low profile number that won’t work...thinking about the hood method, but scared that I am one tree away from ripping up the hood...
      (I miss my e53)

The hood has very little signs of deformation. My hood had those bends in it that give it strength so take that into consideration. If I were to do it again, I would use bolts and nuts though. The rivets are nice and tight still but they are definitely the weakest point.

Yikes I’m worried for your hood if that actually sees limbs.... generally you’d want to connect to a full bull bar for real world branch deflection...

Yeah haha. I had my concerns as well. But its handled the baby branches that we've encountered so far lol. If the limbs are too big, we'd probably get out and prune them back with a saw.

I hate the look of 'limb risers' on an X5, and also having those two wires constantly in my field of view when driving would be far too annoying. You've also damaged the bonnet lid to fit it, and probably would buckle both the bonnet and screen if it was hit by a branch anyway. The most damage done to windscreens is normally flying debris or stones kicked up while driving...so the windscreen would crack or break regardless of those wires.

The limb risers have served us well since installing them. If a branch is too thick, we simply get out and cut it lol. But for the most part, the limb risers are plenty strong enough to keep the baby sticks off the windshield =)
