  • How to engage your core? You hear it all the time "Brace your abs!". This is a very popular cue in the fitness industry but what does it mean? How do you actually brace your abs properly? In this video, the Upright team demonstrates some easy tips on how you can start effectively engaging your core. Although the "brace your abs" cue is one of the most common phrases yelled in a gym, we've discovered that very few of our clients actually have the body awareness to properly engage their core. In response, we've discovered some creative ways in teaching our clients how to experience the sensation of bracing the abs. In this video, Maks, Trevor, and Matt demonstrate simple ab exercises and strategies so you can find your core muscles and start integrating this sensation into your training. Hello strong core muscles!

There are several levels of ab exercises in this video. Where are you right now?

I may have said this before, but: I love you guys' presentation style! No yelling or over-the-top (hyper)active "enthousiasm", but good and clear explanations in a way we can all understand. Also, you seem so friendly. That definitely helps.

Thanks matt was lost before I found your channel. It's still hard to brake old habits like engaging your core the proper way rotating your hips and just how everything ties into one . I needed complete hip replacement surgery and was scheduled for march 26th ( cancelled) found you two weeks ago I'm up to 3 mile walk every other day hip gets sore towards the end back about the 2 mile mark . ( just within the last 3 days learned how to engage core proper way ) my question is should I try to increase my pace by walking faster or my distance a little slower , or say go 4 walks a day just space them out more ? . Thanks matt 👍👍👍

I desperately need your help! Please!?! I have Diastasis Recti and when I exercise (or use my abs for anything really) it feels like my guts are going to pop out!(gross- sorry) I literally have to push whatever it is back in between the muscles (doing a sun salutation last week almost split me open). Its really painful and scary! I've been doing yoga for 8 months (trying to loosen my psoas/hips & strengthen my pelvic floor), but the Diastasis recti issue doesn't seem to be getting much better so I thought I should start targeting that area more - do you have suggestions on what I should be doing? I'm scared to make this worse w/some people with mumbo jumbo youtube 'help'- you guys are the most knowledgeable & helpful people that I've come across on here.

I have no neural coordination between my lungs and my core section, aside the diaphragm. Being a pro horn player, it's mandatory that I know how to engage that specific muscle. But all the rest of the core muscles have been set aside and have lost all functional connections. I can still walk, but jumping, jogging, or squatting are undoable movements for me. Also, I'm autistic (Asperger Syndrom).

@potrelviewer9536 try breathing out but making a hissing sound by bringing your teeth close together and using your tongue. (look up DON’T BE A DOMER | Learn how to use your entire core! by Megsquats) (I'd link the video, but YT hates links). By constricting the air coming directly out of your mouth, it might help you learn to engage your surrounding muscles. Though since you are a horn player, it might not work for you anymore but maybe it will!

Hi all, for the breathing exercise, can you explain why there needs to be a space between the back and the floor? Aren’t we usually told to keep the back flat to the mat? Thanks!

    • @Uprighthealth

You can also do this with the low back flat. The goal is to be able to maintain core engagement in a variety of positions. You don't want to be walking around all day with a flat lower back, so in this video I'm showing you how to do it with neutral spine.

This is an area I've never seemed to put into practical application . Sadly even riding bucking bulls where core and Ballance have more to both the difference in making the whistle and providing a demo for teaching. Damn I would be remis not making mention of the most critical aspect get up and run Forrest run
