  • @highlandermachineworks5795

    Three things you should never fully trust: Fire, water, people/employers.. Christmas Valley could get wiped out today. All it takes is a slight wind change. In the fire service we call it a rekindle. But all that means is that we didn't get every single last ember put out. Many years of firefighting taught me to be wary of when things look to be getting better.

    Good news for Christmas Valley, and likely Meyers and most of SLT. But there is an enormous "unpopulated" forest that's been ignited that will take pretty much all forest visible to the east of SLT. It will engulf all of Heavenly, and the next target in the que is Tahoe Village atop the Kingsbury Grade, where I have a residence. Will they get enough trucks and crew onto Tramway Blvd. to make a difference??

    • @thomashimes644
      @thomashimes644 3 роки тому +1

      nope. They are only having minimal success slowing this fire down. It cannot be stopped by man. We live off Tramway & are evacuating in the morning. There's no expectation we will return to a house.

      Thank you for calling it Meyer's and not Tahoe Paradise. Old timer's know why.
      Currently they are protecting property, I appreciate this, but I pray they will see the need to throw everything they have at this fire to stop it. It is possible to drown this fire and call it good. When I was a child every puff of smoke was addressed as soon as it appeared, it was not allowed to fester out of control.

    Holt Hanley mentioned observing past fire behavior and was worried about tendency for fires to run north in that area, topographic wind channeling seemed the culprit. Worried what Tuesday has in store. If the fire had a brain it just did a perfect flanking maneuver to outflank resistance and create a long front to probe for weakness of a smaller but extremely well armed defending force...

    Heartbreaking to see so many fires out there this year. I realize that wild fires have always been part of life out west, but it seems like every year things keep getting worse. I lived out there for a decade, and don't remember things being so bad. If this keeps up many parts of the Sierra Nevada will be virtually uninhabitable before long with insurance rates skyrocketing if you can get coverage at all. Not to mention the terror of loosing everything that you worked for go up in smoke every time a fire is spotted.

    We (as a society) need to stop building with wood and shift to non combustible materials like steel, concrete, masonry, rock, and synthetic materials like basalt fiber and glass fiber (not embedded in plastic resin, though - that stuff burns). Earth-covered structures work also; provided that the structural reinforcement materials used with it aren’t thermally sensitive. Hollow outer walls should have a high temperature stable skin that’s highly reflective in the IR spectrum.
    We should also be building wildfire bunkers (similar in concept to tornado shelters, or even the fallout shelters from the Cold War era)… someplace safe that won’t get too hot on the inside as the fire front passes by, and has provisions for an air supply and enough basic supplies for a couple of days after the event while things get sorted out. Underground (or otherwise thermally shielded) parking wouldn’t be a bad idea either, so that your vehicle doesn’t get burned up.
    The world has changed, and this is going to keep happening.

    Hard to say when you're not on the ground but I think the way the approaching this frises are bit hit-and-miss put it like that,
    They've got a lake right next to the fire, I'm sure there's plenty of water there, if before the fire got there they set up some pumps to douse the area and the area on the other side of the road even with fire retardant would have stopped the spread more than likely. why can't a helicopter get in there and drop a couple pumps off the fire Cruise can make their way over there if no place to land, they got safe access out shouldn't be a problem!

    • @18robsmith
      @18robsmith 3 роки тому +1

      It would work if the fire was closer to the lake than it is. The time to fight any fire is when it is small, sadly this fire was small when it was a long way from the lake :-(
      Retardant can only really be dropped when the wind and terrain co-operate, and again, the smaller the fire the easier the job. In one of Blancolirio's other video he talks to someone who, pre-emptively, did some ground clearance, canopy raising and sprayed retardant on other stuff, his house survived while his neighbours who did none of these didn't - a bit of forward thinking might save a few more properties (key word "might").

    • @johnsweda2999
      @johnsweda2999 3 роки тому

      well you don't necessarily need to be that close to the lake the pump will need to be, but you can be half mile -mile from the pumps' would be fine, there are only 2 inches hoses easy to handle multiple connected to one manifold you can have 4 to 7 hoses of that size off the manifold, of course depending on size of pump, and running two pumps in tandem would give you an greater Range and pressure, iam talking about quite hefty pumps size of a small car, of course smaller pumps could be used strategically depends on the situation and water source, not actually attacking the fire as such necessary you are tackling the front of the fire and working back so you could be half a mile from the fire drenching the area and moving back using foam in the mix will help. it's the small shrubbery that's the issue I believe then big trees, what about firebreaks, we don't hear about them cutting down small trees to give a fire break I'm sure they're doing it but not mention.
      Yes I do agree with you small I'm sure they notified straight away but could be initiated delay in action too much reconnaissance and not enough action lol helicopters were on standby and they could be called out really short notice then I'm sure these files would be put out quickly small teams can work in and mop up of course it depends on weather conditions. yes I did see that video I'm surprising more people are not doing it the fire retard seems to be easily available and probably not too expensive there might be issues with water supply and pressure! Don't know would have thought the water company would be putting more pressure into the system in those situations

    • @18robsmith
      @18robsmith 3 роки тому +1

      @@johnsweda2999 Half mile on two inch hoses would not make any impact, you'd need at least 6in, or possibly even 12 inch to get enough water up to do anything now :-(
      Helicopters are very limited in what they can do and when they can do it - wind (speed and direction), visibility and terrain can all make it too dangerous to fly. The last thing needed is for one to crash and burn so setting a new fire, reducing the fleet by one, and taking a crew off-line.
      Increasing water mains pressure may not be an option as the infrastructure may not be able to cope with it :-(

      Yes of course conditions play a part but should be no issue with crashes airspace would be kept clear a helicopter can hover they could even do it at night

      Why was something like the Tambora volcanic eruption in 1815 that killed 82,000 people enough to spur God into action? Lots of fires, smoke, and death on that one, yet He stood around, did nothing, yet you were still "saved." Why?
