Thanks very much for all of your kind words and comments, it's been great to hear from you all. Just wanted to flag up something, and that is that, looking back, I realise, as some of you have rightly pointed out, that the voiceover in this video is fucking insanely fast, and I can only hold my hands up and apologise. That's just a result of me not having a clue what I was doing at the time, and being shit at voice editing. With hindsight, I can see that it's pretty tough to listen to, so I just wanted to thank everyone who's had the patience to sit through it, and given me a like anyway.
Because there's been so much growth in the channel lately, I've been getting a bit of impostor syndrome, and really wanted to tell all of you that I know that I could do better. I'm busy with the 31 DAYS OF FELISSA ROSE at the moment, but at some point soon, I'm going to try and re-do this video in the hopes of making it a little bit less shit, now that I've had some more experience, and hopefully, you'll give that version the same love that you've shown this one.
Thanks to you all, and have a very merry Samhain.

It's an overlooked classic, just about. For kids of the 1980s this is a guilty pleasure. The films drips with that early 1980s John Carpenter aesthetic look, sound and feel that firmly puts it in the same stable as classics like The Fog, Escape From New York and The Thing. Tom Atkins in the lead role helped greatly. It's a cheesy inoffensive gory horror that fits the bill this and every Halloween movie marathon.

Must have been great on the big screen. It's such a beautifully shot movie. I'm intrigued, though: Do you think you'd realistically have gone to see it back then if it had just been called 'Season of the Witch?'

@@MorbidMoonlight I watched the original Halloween with my family when it aired on network television the year prior. I had seen old Dracula and Frankenstein movies, but had never seen anything like Halloween. I was literally blown away! Us having not seen H2 yet, all my brother and I knew was Michael was still alive at the end of H1. When we went to go see H3, we made the logical assumption that Myers would be in it. If it had been named Season of the Witch that definitely would've eliminated all the confusion. However, I'm positive we wouldn't have went thru the effort to see it back then if Halloween had not been in the title.

    • @MorbidMoonlight
      @MorbidMoonlight  3 роки тому +4

Its interesting that you hadn't seen H2, since that definitely would have suggested, as this was before the unkillable bogeyman trope had been done to death, that Michael might have been dead for good.
It's crazy how many people must have felt 'duped' by Halloween 3, even though all the publicity was saying that this was a Michael-free movie, but it's great that everyone now can see it for the great movie it is. Little bit more of a shame for Tommy Lee Wallace, and all the people involved, when the film flopped.
Cheers for sharing, though. Really interesting story, glad you still love H3.

    • @jefflayne9448
      @jefflayne9448 3 роки тому +2

@@MorbidMoonlight Yeah you would think it should've obvious that there was no Michael in H3. Just to provide a little context though, they weren't exactly announcing that detail in the trailers I remember seeing. The 30 second spots I remember didn't provide much detail about the plot. I do recall seeing glimpses of gray suits lurking around and thinking that must be Michael. Also, TVs were so much smaller back then. And there was no such thing as HD. It was difficult to make out the little details on those older TVs. Also, there was no DVR to rewind and pause live TV. The internet didn't exist yet so you couldn't Google the latest movies trailers or read about production details and casting choices. Fangoria magazine was really the only resource for horror flicks back then. I do recall reading about H3 in an issue of Fangoria, but that was well after having seen the film.

You see so much as he listens to the wacky sound and visuals..Its both sad and quite funny if you have had a moment in your own life to relate this to in hindsite. @@findlesplurb He truly is, Ive always loved the movie for being more of a modern Halloween Cult ritual that uses the Mysterious Stonehenge as a tool of cosmic horror. Also the Invasion of the Bodysnatchers style paranoia storyline. As well as the great Carpenter score. If it was remade with a bigger budget and some story elements altered in particular the Robot henchmen..It could be a thrilling movie. One last note is that with yet another Myers film being shot out the Rube Goldberg conveyer belt. It was a great idea to shift Halloween into a Anthology for every new entry. To do a new story and hire a different director and crew with Carpenter and Debra Hill Producing, could still be a tradition thing every Halloween. Unfortunately it didnt take and now we have so many timelines of the same Killer its like The Terminator..Anyways, thanks for sharing your thoughts on this. I did eventually go back to it, divorcing it from the original 2 and enjoyed it partly from nostalgia, partly on it's own merits. I still was shaking my head , just wondering what the film maker were thinking by trying to get that past us. Like the Friday the 13th TV series with no Jason, which I went on to enjoy regardless. Then I found out how that Halloween was supposed to be an anthology originally I threw out all of the past vitriol. It's a movie, not a religion, just enjoy yourself.

I must say I quite enjoy it. Cochran is one compelling villain and it is always nice to see Atkins on the screen. You can't lie about the really shlock effects, even for that time but the music, the scenery, the acting, it is all so damn compelling and you are drawn into the story immediatly. Not that there are'nt any flaws, the romance between Challis and Grimbridge was really forced buuuut if you take the possibility into consideration that she was a android the whole time it makes more sense. The supporting cast was ok too, I just have a soft spot for big children like Buddy Kupfer. He really is a treat. Some of the movies failure is of course undeniably connected to the expectations of the audience to see another Michael Myers outing. But I think Carpenter is the right for an anthology series, hell you could take his movies in a row and make a big "Horror Anthology" out of it. It is great. But I digress, personally I have watched Halloween 3 a few months ago and will again this october as it is just the perfect movie for a chilly evening on the sofa with a few beers. Nothing more, nothing less. It is no masterpiece, has undeniable flaws, but the mood, acting and music balance it out and stop it from
becoming just a bad movie. The premise is ok, not great but at least creative, the villain is charmingly vicious and evil especially if you take his goals into consideration. Halloween as it was, lots of dead children given to their gods and he calls it a "prank" on the kids. As said I watch it one to two times a year and I am satisfied every time!

HLW 3 is still an amazingly awesome, sinister movie which I think in it's own way is equal to the 1st two Myers films (which is saying something). The slow burn thrill of this is really effective as these 2 characters (Nelkin & Atkins) explore the Silver Shamrock town & uncover the secrets. Also the parallel between this & the Body Snatchers movies somehow works. I still find the ending with Atkins yelling down the phone "they're coming; they're coming!" unsettling.
Needs a modern reboot with a real good director/producer -James Wan perhaps? How about Stephen Lang ( "Don't Breathe 1+2 )in the Conal Cochran role..The sheer scope for a piece like this in atmospherics & chills would be plentiful. The idea of using droids in a horror film with Oct 31 as the payoff for an insane cultish ideology would be so spectacular if placed in the right hands; M Night Shayamalan? Jordan Peele? Could be well worth it. New Line, Universal etc: we're looking at you. All you need is about 70M $..
At any event, it would always be filmed in the Spring. These horror films always are. Enough time for er.. "Final Processing "☠

Overlooked classic, 1000%! If you can accept the fact that it's a different story without Michael Myers, it's a fun 80's horror film. They were ahead of their time trying to do an anthology series under the name Halloween. It's great idea, they just happened to create a such a classic movie with the original Halloween that the anthology bit was a tough sell. Either way, I think it deserves more love.

The soundtrack is amazing and the cinematography of Dean Cundey is some of the best he has ever done. Is the story strange? oh yes and that's part of it's charm. I love the atmosphere and the explanation Cochran gives for why he's doing all of it is monstrous in it's greatness. Hardcore horror buffs like myself had read about it horror magazines, but the average casual audience moviegoers expected a spiritual sequel to Halloween II. In short, most Halloween fans and casual moviegoers ended up being disappointed and even fooled. Great review, analysis of the many elements that contributed to the failure of Halloween III in that it was not so well received by the audience at the time it was created, released publicly. I personally regard it as an intellectual masterpiece. I watch it since that very first beginning it was shown and I am now even more surprised as I watch it how frightening this movie is. It deals so perfectly with the themes that right now should be even more explored. The question of our relation to the modern technology vs. ancient technology, the real, "ethical" goals of advertising, as we can observe this with the creation of UA-cam, Facebook, what kind of person does these inventions contribute to the society, to the change of ourselves as so-ceeators of this artificial world, the change of our global economic system. This movie is very rich, because it raises these fundamental questions that academics, politicians, marketing specialists, the powers that be, try to overlook deliberately, but Halloween III tries to raise these issues very seriously and we need to discuss them seriously, because right now we are living in a world that Halloween III creators were warning us that once it will become a reality and now we experience it and we are heading in even more sinister reality as they "predicted" with their creative, original piece of artistic work that Halloween III is, a very worthwhile movie.

I argue BOTH viewpoints that this narrator claims are somehow opposing or separate views. Plus, the main, true, actual point....it sucked!!!!!....lol
The more accurate argument is one that the narrator glosses over. It was a bait and switch. I remember when this movie was getting ready to come out. Of course, audiences expected that it would have once again revolved around Michael Myers. After all, the first two did.
So, when it was getting ready to come out, fans like my friends and me were speculating about the "witches" connection to Michael Myers. Was the reason that he was so seemingly supernatural himself as a result of some kind of dark curse? A very logical assumption based on the world-building seen in Halloween 1 & 2.
To frame it any other way is to completely miss the entire point of the hate.
If you promise me what looks like a chocolate cake, but the presented product is made of icing of human feces smeared all over a black sponge, I am gonna be a little angry.

The 3rd one it's great, and you still can feel Carpenter's influence as a producer (not taking anything away from Tommy Lee Wallace) in it. The score, the themes, the protagonists all it's very Carpenteresque even if sometimes some sources claim he had a very light touch as a producer. I think it also comes from the fact that he and Tommy were good friends, and probably were on the same page in a lot of things.

For me, one Michael Meyers Halloween movie was enough with every direct sequel. Everything after the original Halloween was a Friday the 13th-esque excuse for creating body counts. Stacey Nelkin justified the 'Rewind' button on VHS machines. Nigel (Quatermass) Kneale may have disowned it but his contribution gives it its true eldritch, pagan, unadorned horror - a film that ends on the death of untold children. Very few films outside of those countenancing the Holocaust would have the balls, or the verve, Halloween II does it with elan and shows nothing, leaving it to the chambers of your imagination = horror.

Thanks very much. I know Friday 5 gets brought up a lot as a kind of oddball franchise movie, but for me, it's still just 98% a standard Friday movie, except it's got a twist. It's not a totally different approach like H3, and the Friday 5 twist definitely didn't slow down the momentum of the franchise whatsoever, as they kept pumping new movies out.
A more accurate comparison with H3 for me is Friday the 13th, the TV show, which was totally unrelated to the Jason Voorhees movies, and confused a lot of people, by just being its own thing. Weirdly though, it was reasonably popular, despite the confusion over the name, but I suppose, as the F13 movies were still running at the time, fans didn't see it as a replacement for their beloved franchise, but just an offshoot.

I think it's the 'Freddy Factor', where Freddy had become a Rockstar, by the mid 80s and suddenly horror franchises became about seeing their central icons strutting their stuff, as opposed to doing new things, or taking risks.
I think the saminess of a lot of 80s franchises, even to people that love them, is one of the things that's led to H3's reappraisal, just because it's so bold and original, and not just repetition of a formula.

One of the rare 80s horror properties I think you can genuinely describe as being 'Underrated'.

Nightmare 2 and Halloween 3 should have been erased from the Franchise. Halloween 4 and 2, Nightmare 1,3,4 I'd watch over and over growing up.
Tom Atkins in Night of the Creeps I loved.. I called him Captain B rate.. such bad cheesy acting.. "girls, i got good news and bad news.. good news is your prom dates are here.. bad news is.. they're dead" :)

I just watched this the other day. The biggest problems I had with it was of course that the anthology idea was crap but also the age differences between the two protagonists was enormous. I found myself making jokes about sexy wrinkly old man parts with my wife while we watched it. They should have made that a mentorship relationship instead of romantic. Had they just made Shamrocks Halloween supplies the source of Myers insanity and rampage and now people were facing the potential of an army of Meyers-like killers it would have been way better. Say it starts out with the police disposing of Meyers murder evidence and discovering the weird circuitry in his young childhood mask.

The idea the studio had was to let the ending of Halloween II be the end of the Michael Myers story, and branch off into a series of Halloween movies, working like an annual long-term anthology series. Each movie would be a Halloween scary movie, but unconnected to the others. I think a lot of the early cold reception was people WERE expecting the franchise to continue with the story they had set up in the first two films.
Horror anthologies can work. That has been proven. Creepshow {not you, Creepshow 3}, Trilogy of Terror, Tales From the Darkside the Movie {Which is more Creepshow 3 than Creepshow 3}, and many others. What the studio should have done, instead of trying to both get away from the first two movies, and also tread on their popularity, was just call this movie "Halloween: Season of the Witch". This is a good Halloween movie and stands alone well. But, fans of the first two movies went in NOT expecting it to be a standalone, since it was called "Halloween 3".

It's a strange, bitter movie with a cold-blooded concept it rides to the end. It stands out from the crowd that way. But it's like the franchise maker set out to punish his fanbase for enjoying gory thrillers by making one as joyless and nihilistic as possible. No wonder it's being embraced so ardently today.

Arguably the best Halloween movie imho.
It's on a par with the original 8n my eyes, and I possibly have it as my favourite of the entire franchise..
