Patlabor is one of my favorite franchises. The OVAs, the TV series, and the first two movies are all excellent-and quite different as well, wildly fluctuating between comedy and drama. It seems so often overlooked today. Sure, Patlabor (the movie) 2 shows up on best anime ever lists, but the OVAs and the TV series in particular are almost never discussed. It's kind of weird that a series which no one but me seems to care about got a bluray release, but I'm not complaining on that front! It's just a shame that they're so underappreciated.

Alas, poor Alphonse, you deserved so much better.
Having exposure to both Dominion and Patlabor, I'm surprised it took me this long to make the connection between the women protags in both--the similarities never struck me until just now. I really need to get my hands on those old Patlabor DVDs; Starz kept airing the Patlabor movies midnights on weekends when I was in middle school, so the stuff was fairly formative for me. It's been ages, I'm due for a re-visit.
But again, pity about the game.

It's a bit silly but you get the correct password if you battle with all the mechs in the first level. Some will have random post death comments that aren't useful but there are four that matter . 9=3, 8=2, 3=4, 5=1 . This changes the password from "05389" to "01423" which will unlock the next level and give you the correct passcode for Level 2 "22221". I'm debating about doing a fan translation. Purely for my love of the anime and the fact that this game doesn't look to be that long.

Aww. This is looking like the NES; Some classics still remembered today, and lots of hacked together shovelware, and some weird titles that tried but had varying success.
Thanks at least for the patlabor run through.

It's telling that you spent over half of this near-10 minute video talking about the original franchise that inspired the game, rather than the game itself. Then again that's still a worthwhile use of your time, because while you pointed out that the series is better known and distributed in the west than a lot of other anime and manga franchises that get game adaptations, it's still very much a cult classic unknown to the majority of fans even when it was relatively new.

I found a video of someone playing further, and the number you're given at the end of the stage didn't match the password that player input to continue. I assume there's something in the dialogue that provides direction.

I am slowly working my way through your video history, and love your reviews. But please don't stretch film clips to widescreen when they were made using a 4:3 ratio, it just looks horrible! Maintain the aspect ratio, even if it means adding side bars of some sort.

And the robot suit in this looks like a large Skyfire.

Bummer about the game being such a massive turd. Depending on the day, the franchise is anywhere from 1-3 on my all-time favorite anime list. It was so good, and I didn't even have anywhere near a full understanding of its depth or importance to the mech/sci-fi genres or medium of anime as a whole when I first saw it. One of those "I may not know art, but I know what I like" situations, I guess.
