My son is 16 with a 6’7 wingspan at 6’3 and his plates are still wide open. He has pain when he pitches. Typically in the middle of the shoulder or in the rear upper outside shoulder. Pray he doesn’t have this. It actually started hurting during basketball from dunking.

You don’t know how helpful and informative you have been. my son just got diagnosed with this and he’s 12 yrs old but he’s 6’ tall do u think this has anything to do with his growth spurt he is growing so fast.

Absolutely this is a risk factor for growth plate injury.

Thanks for sharing this! Our son just complained of elbow/shoulder pain after a weekend of pitching. A few questions, if you'll indulge me...
    1) He's pitched before with no pain (but fewer pitches overall). Could one weekend of too many pitches and form breaking down cause this injury, or it is something that develops over time?
    2) What is the recommended amount of rest time from throwing/pitching once they complain of pain?
    3) Can you still take batting practice while taking a rest from throwing/pitching?

Hi, thanks for the questions! Typically these injuries occur over the course of time. Particularly true if his mechanics lead to placing excessive stress on the growth plate. I am yet to see a little league elbow or shoulder that did not have associated mechanical faults and shoulder weakness. Typically the progression back to playing in games for growth plate injuries like this is 12 weeks but it depends greatly on the severity.

This is helpful - thank you! That weekend prior to him complaining of pain, he threw a total of 110 pitches over the course of 2 days, followed by more throwing throughout the week in practices.
We got him in with an ortho the week after he complained of pain, and their X-ray revealed a very minor injury. The DR said we caught it very early (thankfully) and have take a month off from all throwing, and will not be pitching any more this season.
Planning to use the summer to build back in and work on improving mechanics. We also are much more educated about pitch counts for his age (9).

Does inside 90 degrees take the pressure off the elbow ?

I got little league elbow and how long should I wait before returning to throwing because I read that you should wait 6 weeks and then slowly return by throwing easy and then harder and harder over a process of another 6 weeks is that true?

I would say somewhere between 6-8 weeks is ideal but being we are heading into the off-season, I would recommend taking the extra time off as there is no rush to get throwing again. Regarding the throwing, 6 weeks is a good timeline. You can check out our Return to Throwing Program for Pitchers and Position players. Those will provide you with specific number and targets to strive for as you work through your rehab.

@@OverheadAthletics my son has felt pain since September and it looks like it’s growth plate inflammation in the elbow. Been doing physical therapy still hurting. Would a break from therapy be recommended?
