There's some shenanigans going on here. This isn't a one-take performance. At 3:18, you clearly hear the bass playing a succession of differing notes, but the bassist isn't playing anything. His left hand index & pinky are resting in a 12th fret octave position (index 12th fret e string, pinky 14th fret d string) and his right hand is touching his volume/tone pots. His right hand is not plucking the strings, yet you hear the changing notes of the melody anyway.
