  • Fisher Investments’ founder, Executive Chairman and Co-Chief Investment Officer Ken Fisher shares his investing tips for those who may be newer to investing. Ken believes impulse control and temperament are more important than intelligence when it comes to investment success. As Ken explains, markets are effective discounters of widely known information, which makes it extremely difficult to have an advantage over other investors.
According to Ken, new investors should avoid the temptation of trying to time the market. Instead, he encourages a passive investment approach with a focus on long-term financial goals. Ken concludes by recommending new investors educate themselves with investment books that reinforce the importance of discipline and long-term planning.

I've read almost every personal finance book at our library over the last 3 years. Definitely all of Ken's books. My recommendations are. Millionaire next door, the wealthy barber, the simple path to wealth and common sense investing. I also listen to podcasts every morning. My favorite are money guy show, talking real money and financial samurai.
What I've learned after reading tons of books is matching the market returns is fine and to devise a plan and stick with your plan and not change course. Keep investing no matter what. Paying yourself 1st is important as well as getting your significant other on board as well. Keep your fees low and you don't need to pay for an advisor. Seek a fee only fiduciary if you need more indepth help. Everyone's is different and has different needs and timelines. And finally nobody knows the future if they did they wouldn't share it with you. Investing every time you get paid helps you to keep investing and not worrying about market timing.

Best investment/trading advice ever! Not just for the new investors but for ALL investors! Truths are often simple to understand but not easy to follow. No matter how long we've been involved in the markets, we must be forever vigilant and always be humble like a Beginner. Thank you Ken for all the great insights and advice, and more importantly as a living paragon of what you've been preaching!

Completely agree on how to learn investing. I used my local library to learn everything that I needed to know. In addition to investing books like "A Random Walk...", also read some behavioral economics books.

Good advise Ken. What is interesting if you read 20 of the best investment books, rarely do they agree, especially the more current ones. The best books I’ve read, was the series 7 habits…

Wow, they are lucky if they get to directly ask you for advice. My advice to them is...listen to Ken and also dont waste money and work on investing in yourself. Oh and begin investing, saving early in your life...keeping fees low as possible and make it systematic mostly.
