  • Tensions in Europe are skyrocketing, with Russia and NATO locked in a blistering missile arms race unlike anything we’ve seen before. Hypersonic and supersonic missile technology is being churned out at a blistering pace, leaving old arsenals in the dust.
In a desperate push to seize the upper hand, Germany and Norway have united to craft a seaborne missile that could dominate the oceans in this new era of warfare: the Super Sonic Strike Missile, or 3SM Tyrfing.
This beast rockets past Mach 2, boasting advanced guidance, targeting systems, and the agility to juke enemy defenses at breakneck speeds. The 3SM is set to give NATO an unmatched edge in naval combat.
Compared to relics like the Naval Strike Missile, which maxes out at Mach 0.9 and lacks cutting-edge maneuverability, the 3SM promises to catapult Europe’s naval defenses into the future.
Yet, even this missile might not hold a candle to the fearsome technology Russia claims to have at the ready...

I note that in 1973, the British Sea Dart (anti-air) missile came into service. It was an air breathing ramjet powered mach 3+ missile which could take out supersonic targets, including other missiles. It is, of course, no longer in service. The missile in the video, which has a different task, appears like a retrograde step, in some respects, although I'm sure it will perform well, if it ever enters production.
Zircon at Mach 9? The experimental rocket powered X-15 going at mach 6.7 melted several external components, so, given Russia's inability to produce reliable kit and its propensity for flat out lying about the capabilities of its weapons systems (e.g. "the T90 is the best tank in the world") I'd say the claim is total BS. Possibly it reaches mach 5+ maybe even mach 6.

It could be due to it being mainly for air defense.
In which case can explain its focus on agility.
Also avoiding missile defense itsself could also explain it. It doesn't matter how slow a weapon is as long as it hits the target. Not everything needs to be hypersonic.
One hypersonic or hundreds of other missiles? That was what one of the US brass said last year, and it was a valid point.
I don't know I am just trying to make excuses. The range is underwhelming.

Take any claim coming out of Russia about their weapons systems with a huge grain of salt. And, if you know any physics at all, you'll know that a mach 9 capability will not be for a missile system that is launched from the surface. Anti-ship missiles tend to be sea skimming systems. Anything that was travelling at mach 9 at any height below 70K feet would melt before it even got anywhere near a target. So, an anti-ship missile? Very doubtful. Nearly all hypersonic weapons are launched at altitude from high flying aircraft and/or are boosted to the upper atmosphere/space by rockets. Unless the projectile is coming almost vertically down upon its target, it invariably slows to high supersonic speeds before it hits. If the Zircon was tested at mach 9, it was doing so at a substantial height, not down low. At most, such a capability might give the target a few less seconds to react to an attack, once the missile dropped into the high supersonic flight regime. The hypersonic flight would only apply to the missile's ingress to the target, meaning if it took a supersonic missile 10 minutes to get a to a target, the hypersonic missile might do it in 2 minutes. Faster, yes, but not impossible to counter. So, apart from the Russian claims, don't believe the hyperbolic nonsense prattled about by the media, either.

In order to fight an extended war with a near peer adversary that has the capability of targeting NATO defense manufacturing, NATO and the US need to begin to build their defense manufacturing deep underground with multiple camouflage entrances and exits to protect against attacks against them and NATO needs to develop multilayer air and missile defenses to protect all of it's strategic infrastructure.
NATO needs to allow NATO countries to stockpile prepositioned ammunitions and supplies in deep underground facilities and keep them as secret and defended as possible.
With today's technologies, it is difficult to keep bases and supplies secret. But NATO needs to solve those problems.
On the other hand, Russia, for example, is heavily dependent on rail and it should be easy for NATO to destroy Russia's rail system.

So the best of the best of the European missile producing manufacturers will need over 10 years to develop and manufacture a Mach 2 anti ship missile? Really? USSR had the Mach 2.5 anti ship missiles like the P-700 Granit since the 1970s. USA has multiple supersonic missiles in its inventory, from the Mach 3.5 SM-6 missile, which beside being an anti missile missile, also has anti ship capability, to HARM anti radiation missile, reaching Mach 2,5, to the newly developed PrSM that reaches Mach 5 in its ballistic arch trajectory.. And this video claims that the Norwegian and German companies are proud to bring a Mach 2 anti ship missile in 10 years? Are you ef-ing kidding me?
As far as the Russian "ground braking, hypersonic and invincible" Zircon missile is concerned, I don't believe a single word coming out of the mouth of the war criminal Putin.. He was also bragging with the "invincible" Kinzhal hypersonic missile being used in Ukraine, until the Patriots arrived and started to knock out 10 out of 10 fired every night... So the fact that Putin said that Zircon is a Mach 9 hypersonic cruise missile means less than if it was written on a door of your local pub's bathroom.
P.S. Kongsberg, the producer of the NSM (Naval strike missile) is now, in the context of developing a new supersonic missile, is saying that NSM is an obsolete missile.. But for the last 10 years they've been saying how the NSM is a cutting edge anti ship missile using the pioneering technology for targeting ships, and how it being subsonic and sporting a ridiculously small warhead, is irrelevant.. Now suddenly NSM's slow speed and small warhead make it obsolete.. WTF?? Even the US Navy decided to use the NSM on their upcoming new Constellation class of frigates, as well as on the LCS and some destroyers.. Why did they do that? I've always said NSM is a lemon, especially compared to the new anti ship missile that was recently developed and entered service - the LRASM. LRASM can be fired from the VLS tubes, has a much longer range than NSM, 3 times larger warhead and an actual innovative targeting technology that passively sniffs out enemy ships.. Unfortunately LRSM is also subsonic but still massively superior to NSM..

@@keving454 and you’re probably right. But betting a missile with a 1000 km range doesn’t work as stated is taking a big risk when your missile only goes 190 km.

US already has one. US Army received its 1st LRHW prototype battery since October 2021. “Today marks an important milestone in equipping our nation’s first hypersonic battery,” said Lt. Gen. L. Neil Thurgood. A 2nd battery is in the works for 2025 and a 3rd one for 2027. 1st battery is currently deployed at Cape Canaveral to undergo personnel training and field testing though no successful launch yet. It is also light enough to be carried by a C-17 Globemaster. Once landed it can launch its missile similar to M142 HIMARS. Japan already agreed to host them.
On the other hand Zumwalt class destroyers already started its modifications this year removing its guns so that it can accommodate a larger VLS able to house CPS. It will also be carried by the upcoming Virginia class Block V subs by 2028. If both will be used for anti-ship role only time will tell. Then their is also the upcoming MAKO though US don't lack anti-ship capabilities especially with stealthy LRASM. However they prefer air assets for anti-ship purposes as it can serve both an ISR and launching platform.
