      It's weird that they put in weapon durability and let you just hold stacks of food that you could consume at any point in time. Oddly, I feel like the older games were more challenging *because* you had resource management to worry about. There were only so many bottles, and sometimes you needed a free one to complete certain puzzles. Do you fill them with health potions, or stamina potions, or possibly fairies? BOTW did away with that for whatever reason.
      Honestly, the durability feels like a cheap way to make the game SEEM more difficult. Now, you're worried your sword or bow will break in the middle of battle. Worse is that there's no option for unarmed combat, which would be helpful with puzzles that require you to hit switches. Really, they needed to add a blacksmith so players can repair and even upgrade their gear.

    • @ryanjones358
      @ryanjones358 11 днів тому

      @@Xanegoh I mean, if they were worried about players just sticking with one weapon and not using a variety they could've had the weapons not break but have you get increasingly better ones as the game goes on with having a variety of stats that are both better and worse than what you already had so you could decide which stats you wanted to prioritize.

    I think the core of the issue is that we love traditional zelda a lot more than the devs do. The devs have stated that they've wanted zelda to be open world from the beginning but never could due to limitations of the consoles they were on. (wind waker is linear (ish)) so honestly we should've seen this coming a while ago, especially after the insane success of Botw and Totk.

    • @hist150project5
      @hist150project5 Місяць тому +9

      If they really wanted Zelda to be open world since the beginning it's quite strange that they made the games progressively more linear. Twilight Princess is more linear than Ocarina of Time and Skyward Sword is more linear than Twilight Princess. Also, Wind Waker has bits of linearity in it that has nothing to do with limitations. There's no reason they couldn't have let you do the Wind Temple before the Earth Temple. Also, before completing forbidden woods the king of red lions will not let you sail too far off your objective. This was likely to prevent sequence breaking. I think Zelda was always intended to be a linear-ish series, and the developers only changed their minds after the backlash of Skyward Sword.

    • @seanrea550
      @seanrea550 Місяць тому +5

      They over corrected though. You basically have a generation game that has established its self as a puzzle dungeon core game and then strip all the dungeons from it. I say have an open zone world and have key story points in a central point of intrest or at chokepoints between zones. As you progress, you unlock more abilities and get new persistent gear. I don't care if you can do the dungeons in a loose order but no shrine spam.

    Not all games need to look realistic to be good, especially with the lore Zelda has. Look at Kirby. The artstyle is adorable, but the lore is actually pretty dark. A games art direction doesn't defy what it is, it depends on the story, gameplay, and level design that defies if it's good or not. I honestly don't understand why people are complaining about something as simple as that, it's pointless.

    The issue with TotK and, to a lesser but still significant extend, BotW that people fear regarding EoW is that they are using the "rethinking conventions" and "promoting player creativity" mantras, which have become MASSIVE red flags for traditional Zelda fans. The former because it eventually revealed a level of disrespect towards their previous games, and the latter because it's nothing but an empty PR tagline that doesn't hold up under scrutiny, and is used as a get out of jail free card for them to become lazy and fill the game with nothing but puzzles and problems that can easily be cheesed with actions that barely require more brain power or dexterity than a tutorial puzzle, if not than straight pressing a "Skip puzzle" prompt.
    The thing is, with the first trailer I was cautiously optimistic, since it looked like you had a limited capacity to summon Echoes, represented by those small triangles floating next to Tri. A little bit of actual resources management is a way for them to give puzzles a bit more of bite. But now with Binding... Like you said, what stop us now from taking any enemy out of the way from a safe distance, and not having to engage with them?
    I'll save my judgement for when the game comes out, but my cautious optimism has become, not quite yet pessimism, but definitely skepticism.

    I see why the classic Zelda fans are unhappy. The stories and dungeons were straight up better in the older games. Giving people as much freedom as they had in BotW and TotK made it much harder for the Zelda devs to make a great story. I spoiled Zelda turning into a dragon just by discovering the geoglyphs in the wrong order. That would never happen in an older Zelda game because the games were more linear. And the dungeons in BotW and TotK sucked. I love the older Zelda dungeons. They are so full of interesting puzzles and I love puzzles. But the dungeons in BotW and TotK only take 30 minutes on a first playthrough and have maybe one or two cool puzzles. But I also really like the freedom and calming ambience of BotW and TotK. The old formula and the new formula both have pros and cons, but to keep all of the fanbase alive, the team is going to have to see both sides at some point and start making both kinds of games. Otherwise, half of Zelda's fanbase will die.

    They turned a metroidvania into a sandbox. Doesn't take a genius to understand why the fanbase is split, and not just for "muh nostalgia". Problem is it's not as easy as just mixing the two styles, they're fundamentally in conflict with each other - one rewards and unlocks areas of the world with new abilities, the other gives them all to you at the start and lets you find fun in how you explore, at the cost of actual rewards since they already gave them out.
    Since the pandora's box has already been opened, I think the solution is to have games for both styles that they can go all the way with the respective style, and to continuously try to innovate and improve both styles. There's PLENTY more room for improvement for the freedom style - but the linear style also needs to work harder to figure out how to differentiate its titles as well.
    (My personal favorite is still Majora's Mask for its timeloop mechanic, which led to its deeper characters and sidequests, which colored its darker tone and plot.)
    I think if they really want to commit to this style though, the best route would be to take notes from the budding metroidbrania genre, like Outer Wilds. This way, they can design the worlds around knowledge-gates that give players the freedom to figure them out through careful experimentation or observation - offering the sacred player freedom - while still having rewards for exploration, just with knowledge instead of upgrades and abilities... which basically function like new abilities that you could always use in the world, but just didn't know about.

      I love BoTW's Link and Zelda. I'd be happy to see them featured in another game - but at the same time, I understand the argument: showing influence from a previous related title isn't the same as reusing the names, places and character designs.
      Hyrule, Link and Zelda can all look and feel as varied as the imagination of the creators allow, but will always be connected by the Triforce.

    I'm on team, "I'm tired of the Wild formula", but I'm also optimistic about the wild formula aspects that are in EoW. It's def copium, but I'm hoping this game is an experiment to see how those mechanics can work in a classic game akin to how they used Zelda 1's engine to theory test Breath of the Wild. Ultimately, if we're not going to see the classic 3d formula for awhile, then I hope this will bring us closer to a semi-open world 3d Zelda that perfectly blends the best of both.
    A semi-open world Zelda with a Dark Souls 1-esque approach to the world design sounds pretty cool imo. Again, copium

    6:15 I actually wouldn't mind a Zelda game where Link and or Princess Zelda travel to a neighboring kingdom for diplomacy reasons and get caught up in some sort of plot there, as long as the world remains high fantasy. Link in the original Zelda was a knight errant who was just happening through Hyrule at the time and if Zelda goes to a nearby kingdom to meet their rulers, Link could be her bodyguard and get sent along. Like Mario Odyssey but instead of modern cities, like Brooklyn, we travel to historical fantasy inspired settings, like ancient Rome, Egypt or feudal Japan.

    I personally haven't liked botw or toto's take on anything. I felt like they tried to turn Zelda into a genre it was never meant to be. I feel like those would have been better as a whole new franchise on their own and we continued to have a more linear experience as I have always been accustomed to with Zelda. It allowed me to truly feel the sense of Zelda progression. In botw and totk I can't ever tell if I have improved or gotten worse no matter how many hours I put into the games. My prediction is that Nintendo’s trying to ease these new players into the traditional game style by bringing in mechanics and features from the newer titles. The creator wanted a "Free roaming" game where players can explore whereever and however they want. They worked so hard on this game that it was worth it.
    He wanted to break the gaming physics to allow players explore around without obstacles to break or pass. That was fun tbh. Fun enough to where if it was eliminated, it wouldnt be challenging. And that's like handing the game to babies or toddlers because this gameplay is a fit for them.
    Removing obstacles made the game way less challenging. and jumping straight to the final boss? That's like saying that you dont enjoy the game. You just wanted to finish it.
