In our completionist walkthrough, we attempt to beat XCOM 2 War of the Chosen on Legend difficulty with Ironman mode turned on. On Legend difficulty, the hardest difficulty setting in XCOM 2, enemies will be deadlier, more numerours and harder to kill, while we unlock new technologies slower and have to pay more to purchase useful items. To make things even harder, we also play with Ironman mode turned on, making all of our decisions permanent. Ironman mode prevents us from reverting back to an earlier save file if things go wrong, so if we mess up, we will have to live with the consequences. Paired together, Legend difficulty and Ironman mode provide by far the toughest challenge in XCOM 2 - but they also offer the most intense gameplay experience.
Since this is a completionist walkthrough of XCOM 2 War of the Chosen, we will also focus on unlocking almost all achievements in the game. The only achievements that will not be covered in this walkthrough are those relating to the (now defunct) multiplayer mode as well as the "The Few and the Proud" and the "Exquisite Timing" achievement. The first would severely limit the number of community creations that this series could feature and the latter would require us to quickly rush through the game, likely resulting in missing a lot of achievements and defeating the purpose of a completionist playthrough.
This XCOM 2 Walkthrough covers the complete XCOM 2 Collection, including all downloadable content and expansions. We will not only play through the XCOM 2 base game, but also the War of the Chosen expansion featuring new factions, missions and enemies, the Alien Hunters DLC featuring powerful new aliens, the Shen's Last Gift DLC featuring a new soldier class, and the Anarchy's Children and Resistance Warrior Pack DLCs with additional soldier customization options. Additionally, War of the Chosen, Alien Hunters and Shen's Last Gift all introduce additional achievements for us to unlock.
All customizable characters in this series are made by the Pete Complete community. Every soldier will be named after and designed by a Patreon supporter. To find out how to get your name into the series as well, check out this video (disregard the deadline): • Join the Pete Complete...
XCOM 2 is a turn-based action strategy game developed by Firaxis Games and the sequel to XCOM Enemy Unknown (and its Enemy Within expansion). It includes new units for XCOM and the aliens, new gameplay mechanics, more character customization options and a deepter tactical layer. However, XCOM 2 does not pick up where Enemy Unknown left off: Instead, the game assumes the player's failure to defeat the alien invaders in the first game and therefore begins twenty years after the events of XCOM Enemy Unknown on an Earth ruled by the aliens. Always on the run, the remnant XCOM forces must find a way to rise from the ashes, expose the insidious truth behind the occupation and eliminate the alien threat once and for all.

Instruction unclear, the mission became an xp farm on step 1
I had a pretty good farm going on my last avenger defense too lol, took out 40 aliens before feeling like I was cheesing too hard so I stopped
I got 9 people promoted when I did it lol
I had 60 down 3 sharp shooter majors and grenadiers with war suits is too easy
I have never agreed with a comment before as much as I agree with this one
@@tober6firez979 4 turrets + full squad is just *genocide against advent intensifies*
The enemies do not spawn indefinitely. Got stuck grinding this mission on harder difficulty and got over 40+ turns into this. No continuous spawning.
There's a point where the game will just stop spawning reinforcements on all indefinite reinforcements missions. It seems to be inconsistent, and may be affected by hardware.
@@twinodoom I believe you might be correct. I only tested it in on console and I don't think it is fixed yet.
Beaglerush has a 2 hour Video with only killing/farming Advent on this Mission, over 100, IIRC. I stop farming Advent/Aliens on this Mission as soon as i get a Promotion for all my Soldiers. Its a Promotion Mission like "Shens last Gift" and the Viperking Mission.
There's something fundamentally amusing about the concept of a Berserker inputting command codes to shut down the avenger. Like Brock Lesnar playing James Bond lol.
I imagine it's more like they run through the ship tearing the living hell out of everything and everyone. Cue Doom soundtrack.
Mr. Incredible typing on his tiny computer.
@@FGC292 I mean, it's a nice theory until you play The Lazarus Project and find out Central and Shen are a colonel-tier ranger and specialist respectively. With a little help they took down four avatars. Be pretty sad if they couldn't handle one 'serker.
@@johnnyandtheinsatiablevoid Evidently, they can't.
@@FGC292 I blame the RNG
I used a reaper to go to the inhibitor while 5 man defended the ramp. 7 turns I was done. The reaper is really usefull because of his stealth.
Also some tips you can also use for that mission:
1- The defense system is a really great option to get before this mission kicks in at some point in the story as well. And the upgrade version, since it provides an extra 2 turrets and better aim too. It also works on the Chosen version of this type of mission.
2- just like the one i mentioned it before, anything with squadsight is perfect to get the beacon done in no time without even has to leave the Avenger at all or the vicinity. You just need someone like a reaper to just scout the area and look for the beacon or the rail gun in the Chosen version. The Turrets also can do the same if has line of sight too. Also, there is a very interesting thing. The battery in the chosen defense mission can also be triggered by Remote start at low health.
3- You can even 2 turn the defense if the beacon is closer and you had a reaper, with level 3 bond , a skirmishers with the skill who gives 1 turn you any ally, a Psi with inspiration and 2 snipers with bluescreen rounds. You only need to locate the beacon, quickly, shoot it with both snipers in the 2nd turn if the repear find it with a blue move, go back with the 2nd move, give both moves form the bond to the reaper, and use Combat presence and/or inspiration to give the extra turn movement to the reaper for go back. to the avenger, even had time to shoot any enemy in sight too and leave a turn to turn the lift.
4- you can also use this mission for level up any soldier you want through the constant reinforcement, kudos if the soilder has any multi hit/turn refund action like death from above, reaper or Serial as well.
I had an upgraded defense matrix and the A-team of 6+ units on the battlefield. I absolutely destroyed a bunch of aliens. But I eventually took off once I destroyed the relay. I didn’t know the alien spawns were infinite either. Once I saw more officers, heavy mechs, shield and stun units spawning in, I was like screw this. Also, 1 codex destroyed 2 of my turrets. No one was critically injured, we got a lot of xp, and I made it out just in time as to not get dog-piled.
I got one that was just destroy the artillery gun THEN kill all enemies
Such a poorly-designed mission. Enemies just rush right for the ramp to cue an arbitrary game over despite the presumably several hundred regular armed people inside the Avenger, never mind the soldiers you didn't field just waiting in there.
Of _course_ they rush the enemy lines, it's the only option they have; they're working against the clock while the enemy only needs to blow-up one frail device and run. Rushing up to shut down the ship with the control codes so it _can't_ run and your reinforcement have a chance to overwhelm them is the only option they have.
And it's not like the army of cloned, mass-produced, poorly-trained, and chip-controlled expendable shock troops care if they die, as long as they served the Elders.
The _only_ element of poor choice in the mission is that Shen apparently didn't think to change the Avenger's command codes when repairing the ship specifically to prevent something like this happening in the first place.
I killed all the enemies, it's better that way, xp, promotions so you can definitely kill all them, also I hate how they will send injured people out, causing them to get negative traits even if they don't take dage, now I have to build an infirmary & I'm doing the UFO mission & I only have 5 people available when I have a size 2(party size 6) but have nobody available, the spectre is annoying alongside the vipers, I might just reload a previous save because I got two grenadiers & they are horrible at aim & a squaddie Ranger, only people who are good is my Sniper & Ranger you get from the tutorial
Ay bro since you said the grenadiers are bad then maybe try the Psi ops. pair them with war suits an heavy weapon in the suit slot and they're pretty op if you pair it with null lance, fortress and the blaster launcher. Or maybe get an reaper with banish and max their ammo count. (Which works astonishingly great on chosen)
Between 18-30 is probably the max psi ops you'd want so you have spare psi squad's.
Also you CAN get both ability column abilities.
Fixed the third mistake with mod
You could always farm the mission right? Get enough bodies anything is possible
Yeah. This mission is an xp farm. Drag it out so that theu keep sending out your soldiers and level them up.
Spoilers!! 😂
Best way to manage these missions is with a sniper who can usually down the inhibitor while one guy stealths to get sight on the inhibitor. Then everyone else stays near the ramp while being spaced enough to avoid aoe attacks.
My 2nd playthough had a building spawn in fron of it so I had to push uo with heavies to blow up several walls.
Good to see i wasnt the only one who did this.
Even tho its not that usefull, the defense facility its so usefull in WOTC, because its harder for the chosen to sabotage the avenger, and in this type of mission they do the exact same thing that you said with the snipers, but you have 4.
Every single time I’ve done this mission, a building spawned in front of the inhibitor. I thought that was just standard, like the developers did it to avoid sniper cheese, but no I’m just unlucky
@@HalFromTartary i ahve had this a few times i would just send the sniper in a direction to give him clear line of sight. i noticed that generally they seem to focus on going for the ramp and not so much my soldiers. Unless they changed that
I love that your missions are so flawless that you specifically need to go out of your way to show us some bad mistakes lol
Thanks for the short Pete! It is cool seeing you use this to show examples you cannot show during your complete and perfect runs.
During this very mission he made a mistake by thinking that he can act after shooting when using the companion boost for extra ap xD
But he certainly is meticulous and mistakes are not common
Mind controlled enemies do not count. I remember taking one of their andromedons with me when I left, thinking "can we keep it?", and the mission still succeeded. Sadly, that didn't give me access to the Andromedon for the following missions.
I'm just imagining a few of the rookies clinging to the Andromedon, treating it like it's a big puppy, begging Bradford to let them keep it.
I failed a mission in the first month which put a ufo on the hunt. 2nd month with a couple sergeants made this a nightmare. Thank god they let you use injured units because without my hurt reaper, this was definitely run ender
The alien invasion boutta find out just how many units I can fit in the avenger, making it look like a freaking clown car in comparison:
same, but in my case all 395 soldiers are some kind of broken modded unit with 4 dashes, 8 resets, 1 insta kills and godmode. They aren't invading me, I'm invading them.
@@ocskopf We love it when Hard Yards breaks lasting an infinite amount of turns and actions.
Me who stayed and killed each wave for an easy xp farm
''How do we make the game harder?''
''make EVAC-ing use an action point.''
''Genius.''
No this is a farm mission. Take advantage my friends. 😂
First time I did this I just vaporized every enemy and got lots of xp.
IVE NEVER SEEN THIS MISSIOM 😂😂😂
Set the difficulty to hardest, you will be catched by enemy UFO :)
#4: Lifting off at all. The game will in fact yeet your strongest soldier for no conceivable reason despite him DEFINITELY BEING ON THE RAMP, requiring save editing or a mod to fix.
I think on console there are only 50 enemies on the mission cause I was pinned down and couldn’t move my sniper and by the time I left I killed 47/50. Idk tho
You can clear the map.
Depends how strong you're. It can infact be extremely easy to do so, and I do play on legend.
Sentries are helpful.
You can spend all your movements inside the evac zone, that's nonsensical BS.
Obviously you shouldn't evac with an alien inside, they even said to not lift off and to not allow any alien to stay inside the zone...
The aliens even ignore your soldiers to go there... Come on. You can't be serious.
This is why I do not play on ironman cause theres so many dumb little game functions that will ruin your save in 1 turn if you dont know about it
this mission is stupidly easy tbh. Afaik, you can even restart it on ironman if failed
This stage was just a big xp grind, nothing else ^^
If it happens early it's very good for XP, much like Lost World, 3 enemies every wave the most difficult being a MEC it's an XP farm for the future Sharpshooter generation.
I killed all enemies
So I don't play on Legend but on Veteran enemies do not spawn in indefinitely. I got up around 65 kills and they stopped coming. lol
I believe they do continue coming, but you need to wait a bit if you take them out quickly. Could be that I'm wrong, though.
@@KougaJ7 not quickly I waited 6 more turns before leaving. I cleared the first bunch. Then non stop reinforcements for like 20 turns. Then nothing for 6 so I left
I made that mistake 😢 end up losing up valuable members rip soldiers
Doing this mission with a Reaper is so much easier.
havent seen u pop up on my feed since i watched ur mutant year zero 100% play thru. good to see ur still active. keep up the good work. also might as well recommend Red Solstice 2: Survivors and Aliens: Dark Descent.
I have around 1.1k hours on this game and even I didnt know the last 2 facts. Thanks Pete!!!
I do have a question about lifting off. I'm assuming if you have sny personnel not on the ramp at the time of lift off ( still on the ground ) Im assuming they get left behind. Does that mean they get captured and end up in a possible future prison so they could be rescued like if soldier is captured by the chosen or psionic brain washed and left behind
My best tactic on hardest difficulti is this:
* Send your reaper to the tower
* If u have vision on tower you can shoot it with snipers through all the map.
* Then, RUN :D
"You don't have to clear the map"
My two colonel sharpshooters with serial and free reload +3 and AP Rounds: Fuggin watch me do it anyway
Thank you!
Now i have an URGE to play Xcom all three in a row ffs, man i dont have that much space.
Naw dawg shark mission from enemy unknown was hard af. That bomb at the end I lost a real one
Disagree on the first point (the rest were spot on). This mission is an exp farm, no point leaving until you have eaten your fill.
The longer you take to destroy the objective, the more of your troops will be sent out, to the point I'm not a 100% sure there's a cap on how many.
They will be taken from the top of your list to the bottom, ignoring the ones already out there.
To find the top of that list view your troops, keep going right until you find the last person you added to your barracks, go right once more and this is the top of your list.
Move slowly to the objective, squeeze as many extra troops out of your list you can, then blow the thing, fight your way back to the ramp and hold the line until either everyone (that can) has gained a level up or you're just getting really, really bored.
The Defense Matrix room, more so with an engi on staff let alone upgraded, can help a lot in these such missions.
Defense matrix is great when the chosen assaults the avenger since the turrets get guaranted hits on the turret cars
I hated this mission . My guys died in 1 hit always
Ohoho Avenger defence
Is this a one time mission or is it repeatable?
It can happen multiple times in the campaign if you let the "Hunt XCOM" dark event trigger
@@N1ghtwalk3r thanks! That's awesome I love defending the ship. Wish xcom 1 let you defend the base more than once
@@Topdawg42 If you play XCOM EW Longwar it will happen several times if you are unlucky.. Back in the days we call it "Master Sergeant killing Mission"
I love avenger defence its a great way to level soldiers once the doodad is blown up
My favourite one was when my whole squad had blaster bombs and I won without leaving the ramp 😂
I do wonder if somehow you slip up and squadwipe, if you would still carry on and try to salvage it? Or reload? This must be such a high-stress series to produce!
I think that if you're squad is wiped it's a game over, like the base defense in XCOM 1. But I don't know if in XCOM 2 the game lets you replay it even if you're in an iroman run like in the first game.
@@orestesbastos This XCOM 2 Series is technically being played in standard mode, rather than Ironman (so glitches and crashes can't ruin the save, explained in ep. 1). The clips from this short kinda demonstrate that it's not actually ironman as well. I trust Pete to hold to the spirit of it, but it's always interesting to see a small crack in his otherwise perfect play.
@@RolandFriskyCow oh I didn't remember that. Will rewatch the first episode, but I don't think Pete would have too many slip ups to get a squad wipe, and if he did maybe he would have to retry if he was following ironman rules, or maybe begin from scratch.
@@orestesbastos Squad wipes do not necessarily mean game over in XCOM2, unless it's a critical mission. If it's not a critical mission, you can continue playing with your benched squad members. It's part of the impact that the game has. Squad members, although valuable, were designed to be replaceable.
@@KougaJ7 I know, but I belive the avengar defense is a critical mission, right?
I just kill all enemies and win
Are you sure you're not thinking of the Chosen Avenger Defence? That one's a standard "kill everyone" mission.
