My dad was the caretaker there for the last 6 years the track was open. We lived there year round during that time! Our mobile overlooked the start/finish line! Was a great place for me as an older kid to young teen to experience! Many amazing memories for myself and my dad! I will be forwarding this to him! Thank you bring back so many great memories!
I have this memory of being a kid coming here with my dad and grandpa after the track closed. We came to take some of the lumber from the grandstands I believe i still have some of it around with that teal green paint on it. I remember making the long hike up from the gate to find the caretaker to open it so we could drive up and load the truck.
My dad would take me and my brothers there to watch some races on random evenings in the late(r) 80s. Great memories of being a kid and watching for Datsun 510s! Thanks for posting.
The gymkhana event takes place in the BCIT parking lot. The white building at 4:53 is the BCIT Library, and still stands today (but is painted a different color).
7 hr enduro with Ramon was the start of my apprenticeship. That was a magical time in our country. We who where their all experienced the best time in the history of Canada. It will never be that way again.😢
I recall going to Westwood track many times in the later 1960' and early 1970's for car and motorcycle racing. In the mid to late 1990's having become an accountant, I had a client who built dozens of houses and townhouses there. In one case, when they were doing their site excavations, they uncovered hundreds if not thousands of old tires that someone had buried on the site rather than having them hauled away. Fortunately, my client was able to get Wesbild, the main developer, to pay for their removal.
@@DavidM2002 LOL!!!! I remember the tire dump! It was by the the old Moto Cross track (if you remember that) Early 70’s,Me and my brothers used to go play in that tire dump when dad was racing his bike. Cheers to ya for that memory 🍻
Nice to see Wetwood again. In the early 70's (I was 10 yrs old) and worked with my dad on deer's leap as a corner marshal for years. When I turned 16 in 1976 I took drivers training in a Honda civic and the year before my dad took drivers training in a 1969 396 chevelle SS that had a 4 spd Muncie. Four wheel drum brakes it had. Lots of go but no stop. In 1978 I won the Westwood claimers class championship and I hold the track record for that class ( 1:28.03 ). It was a class specifically for Datsun 510's and after two races anyone could claim your car for $1200 and you could claim someone else's. I was later renamed Westwood class but no claiming. In 1982 I won the GT3 championship in Conference and that qualified me to run at the nationals at Mid Ohio. We had no money left and I couldn't go. That Porsfhe is most likely Charlie Godecke. He was a lunatic -- LOL and was later a driving instructor at Rivers Edge race track in Mission. He was our driving instructor for my brother and I when after many years I renewed my license. That Brabham could be John OR Bob Randall. I remember Bob and Hilda Randall well. He was our President for decades and Hilda did our licenses. They were VERY nice people. I think I still have a super 8 film of my dad's chevelle from inside the car running at Westwood. No sound on that camera as I recall. Not sure where it is but we wouldn't have a projector anymore and my dad passed away in 2020. Mom still with us but she just turned 92 a few days ago. Still on her own. Good for you mom !! Unfortunately I'm old now too ------ 64. Time is evil. By the way --- Hi Al Ores if you are seeing this. To Tracy Germain --- You got robbed girl. The GT3 championship trophy is at my house but it should be at yours. You are hellish fast girl but Andy never gave you a car that stayed together. You are a champion but it's just not official.
I was a member of the BC (Burnaby Coquitlam) Sports Car club in the early 1970s and we manned (with wives and girlfriends always on site) a marshal’s station on the outside of turn 1 overlooking the carousel and therefore often busy when folks would spin out. Many memories of long days standing in the rain appreciating how Wetwood earned its nickname Members of our club, who worked for BCTel, strung the sound system around the track as several of them were linesmen and skilled at working up poles.
I took driver training there with my friend Jaz, we used his Datsun 510 with my tires! so much fun! Remember the bikes doing wheelies over dear's leap, (Allan Dick?) I talked to him about it and he said it was kinda tricky because at that speed you couldn't let it get to high or the wind would catch it and flip you over! I made the sprockets for his bike.
Cool to see, I raced a Titan Mk3 there in 1985/86. I remember Al Oars, Felim Power, Mike Witters {who I bought my car off} Trevor Shaw, Tim Mitchell, Dan Hodap,, Someone named Charles from the US among others. What a great track and a great time! I can still do a lap in my head.
I raced Formula Ford there until the track closed in 1990. It was a fairly primitive place, but very challenging. I’d forgotten about the huge swamp inside of turn 1! There were a lot of places to hurt yourself, including Deers Leap, where marshals had a special flag to warn of deer by the edge of the track.
I drove Westwood many times with the BMW & Alfa club. We were among the last clubs to use the track before it closed for development. Such great memories. Too bad we have nothing like that anywhere in the Lower Mainland.
I rode the train to Westwood from Vancouver ( Washington that is) in 1979 for the Trans Am races and drove up in 1980. Fun track and I still a ticket holder from Westwood.
I Was there in 1978 to see Herb Adams SCCA Silverbird 366 ci. RA IV 600 HP Trans Am but it Wasn't there to do scheduling - it finished 2nd at The California Laguna Seca SCCA Race that year ahead of all the Porsches and A # of BBC Vettes etc 😎
The images at 4:58:07 are NOT in North Vancouver where I grew up. The North Shore mountains are far too distant to be in North Van. I looked at some recent photos I took from QE Park and can identify Grouse Mountain in your video and the closer mountain which has to be Burnaby Mountain. That makes this parking lot in Burnaby and by the angle in northwest Burnaby.
Remember it well. Use to attend most races in the late 60's and early 70's. Especially when Eppie Weatshie (sp) ran the Ford GT 40 around the track. Started volunteering as a corner worker in April 72 but transferred to Edmonton in May 72.
The Sports Car Club of B.C. was not compensated by the province or the City of Coquitlam, for breaking the 99 year lease. The debt is outstanding, and the SCCBC is expecting this to be addressed.
Do you remember when the Centennial mini came to Weswood from eastern Canada ? An A sedan race , they started the mini last , after all the cars were in the carousel and beyond , the mini was as fast as a formula junior , it arrived back at the start finish first and seconds ahead of the next place cars .
That was me ? SCCBC allowed the car to run for no points . At that time Sedans had 4 classes D started 1st. 15 seconds between each class A sedan last. I was at the back of B sedan. John Hall caught me before the finish .I was 2nd overall. The spectators enjoyed. I was then invited to join SCCBC if I made the Mini to Conference specs or FIA Group 2. Lap time was 1.19. Also was invited to run the Players Pacific as a mobile spectator as Eppie Wietze, John Cordts passed me every 7 laps..
