Very impressed with this. Grew up on his music in NYC. Excellent performer and an important figure that was taken far too early. People now wouldn't believe just how popular he was in the 80's and 90's.
The Bum Diddly Hev was not only a hip hop legend (and the only rapper my mother would listen to without getting offended), but he was also one of the nicest guys in the business. No one can ever say a bad thing about this man. He dated my aunt way back in the day, and I can confirm this. He was also responsible for bringing Puff to Uptown Records. Blue Funk is definitely his best album, from a lyrical standpoint. RIP, my friend.
Excellent commentary and I thank you for sharing this with us all. My sister met Heavy D’s father a few years ago at a store she was working in and he was very pleasant. I am proud to say that I own all of his records on vinyl and as a DJ, I will continue to keep his name alive!
Never forgotten !! Only rapper to Record with both Micheal And Janet . Jamaican born! Was the first to have super star models in a rap video. He opened doors for puffy, helped jodeci get signed , only rapper on uptown records. Gave the ruff ryders some sound advice on building a label behind one artist (dmx)
Heavy D isn’t forgotten, just nobody speaks on ANY 80s artists anymore. When’s the last you heard someone speak on Big Daddy Kane or Slick Rick? A while lmao
Love that album! Got the vinyl hehe. My favorite tracks on that lp are Here Comes The Heavster, also Who's In The House and of course the title track Blue Funk 🔥🔥🔥🔥
He isn’t forgotten, y’all just wasn’t up on heavy so in the white community his name isn’t really much but in the black community he’s a legend that’s still relevant today.
His name is much in the white community actually. ''Now that we found love" was a top 10 hit in the UK. Meaning hundreds and thousands of the white community loved him.
Fantastic video and well researched, heavy didn't sign Jodeci and Mary J Blige though, that was Andre Harrell. He did sign Soul 4 real. I'm regards to the Boyz Eddie F went on to do A&R at uptown as well as producing then broke away and formed untouchables entertainment. Absolutely love how dedicated and passionate you are about an artist and an alum from top to bottom ❤
@@saraarose not taking away from your piece though, it’s amazing and thorough, not used to people retroactively searching out the heavster, impressed and definitely a sub going forward 🫡
Subbed this is good stuff! Heav was HUGE back then even down here in Texas we were jamming "Gyrlz they love me" DJ Screw did a crazy version. I make beats so if you ever want any background scoring I got you just lmk the email!
Good research and editing - punching above your view count. If I may suggest I think you gotta remove the bed from the background to fix the thumbnail appeal.
I like your analysis and the editing is well done. Unfortunately the run on monotonous tone makes your presentation blend together and become droll for all but the most engaged listener. Try walking around, changing your background, change your tone and outfit. Mix it up and keep it interesting
1. Heavy D was not one of the first big guy rappers. Big Bad Hank from the Sugarhill Gang was a large rapper back in 1979. The Fat Boys were world famous by 1985, years before Heavy D. Also, B Fats was locally large in NYC with the Woppit in 1986. Heavy D came out in 1987. 2.Most radio stations didn't play one genre or the other in reference to R&B and rap. Besides the West Coast's KDAY, there was no full-time rap radio stations. Rap rarely ever got played during the daytime, only at night on mixshows or on college radio. 3. Don't rely on Wikipedia, Blue Funk was released in 1992. The year is printed on the cd and back album cover.
hey thanks for the corrections - right about the fat boys, they didn't cross my mind. Would love to own the vinyl/cd to have known about the correct release date 🤧 appreciate the information!
Girl you look wayyyy too young to know anything about Heavy D let alone for him to be one of your favorite rappers but I'm going to let that slide and subscribe

The "Overweight Lover" Heavy D' is the first crossover rapper. And you're absolutely right, he is overlooked! Shoutout to you! 💯

This is a great video
Very dope, Heavy D was that guy.

Really good review. Love how you placed Heavy D into a larger context. They Reminisce Over You is my favorite song btw!
Blue Funk is literally one of my top 10 albums of all time. I am glad I own the OG CD and vinyl.
soo lucky!
Super awesomeness ❤
so dope! Hev use to wear Versace and pop Crystal before it became a hip-hop thing. A true trend setter.
Great channel.. you earned a new subscriber lol.

How/who introduced you to these artists? Have they shaped your perspective? I hope you continue. Peace.
He didn’t sign Mary and jodeci
He did sign Monifah, soul for real, lost boys ,Horace Brown …long live heavy D
right! my mistake - those two were signed while he was an exec at uptown - Harrell signed them :)

@@saraarose gotcha, perhaps a popup green screen could work and edit in post. But of course then you still need a place to store that 😂
New sub over here! I would love to get a woman's perspective on some classic albums!
