    It would be great to hear a top band switch to student grade instruments for a piece to show that the instrument doesn't make the difference people expect

    • @EnglishTMTB
      @EnglishTMTB 7 років тому

      On the contrary, it'd make a significant difference - moreso on some insuments than others (there have been numerous "professional" grade sops and flugels with significant tuning issues, the student versions are typically awful), but overall the effect would be marked.
      Sure, they'd still be better than a poor quality band on the same student instruments, and even the poor quality band on pro instruments - but they'd still be significantly below their best.
      To analogise a little... It's like saying that if you put a bunch of racing drivers in bangers you'd notice very little difference... Flip it over, and give your average driver on the street a Ferrari for the day and the difference between their lap times (Vs the "banger" above) will be far less than the pro driver would.
      It's having the skills to get the most out of the best equipment that makes the best bands so good - when you're getting the most out of any equipment, having the best makes the biggest difference.
      I don't want to cast any aspersions, but my experience has been that most people who made this kind of argument (in person) either aren't especially good players or haven't played with top class bands to understand just how much attention to detail goes into creating those performances.

    • @zacharygriffin6285
      @zacharygriffin6285 3 роки тому

      It doesn’t make that much difference to an audience with an untrained ear, but subtleties are quite noticeable to the player and trained listeners. In my opinion, each one is very different. I’m on track to receive a music degree from a conservatory-level university and here are my thoughts:
      1) B - good intonation from the expensive horn, missed articulations from cheap mouthpiece
      2) A - solid intonation and articulations from both expensive parts
      3) C - consistent articulations from expensive mouthpiece, poor intonation from cheap horn
      4) D - intonation issues caused by cheap horn, pitch instability caused by the mouthpiece
      I may not be right with the combinations, but the descriptions are valid.

    • @EnglishTMTB
      @EnglishTMTB 2 роки тому

      @@zacharygriffin6285 Close, the last two the wrong way around.
      There's a little bit of a hint in the video before the playing begins - the more expensive mouthpiece is a Denis Wick, and generally speaking those tend to be fairly dark in tone and quite not too tight slotting, so you get a fluidity to the tone despite the intonation wrangles (which are audible) caused by the cheaper cornet.
      The mouthpieces are responsible for quite a lot of the difference in tone... If you were to listen back a couple of times you'd easily be able to break down which pairs clips correspond to the same mouthpiece - you can then listen again to notice which highlight the intonation flaws of the cheap cornet.
      A friend mentioned this video to me just today, so I had to come back and listen again and see if I got the same answer as before (I got it right at the time of release, BADC) - yup, correct again.
      And reading along with the music, the incorrect rhythm in the penultimate bar really grates on me, just as it did at the time.

  • @MaartenZaagman
    @MaartenZaagman 7 років тому +16

    CADB I'm hearing a richer, fuller tone with a little less sharpness on the expensive cornet. The mouthpieces differ by quality of tuning and ease of playing. (I'm no brassplayer so I am just guessing)

    • @crimsun7186
      @crimsun7186 7 років тому

      Considering a softer metal is cheaper to use in manufacture, it's safe to say that the most expensive cornet has the sharper and more brittle sound.

    • @EnglishTMTB
      @EnglishTMTB 7 років тому +1

      The mouthpiece can impact the tone significantly - and the cheap one isn't a copy of the better one, so the odds are the significant changes in tone are because of the mouthpiece.

    What was the purpose of the experiment?
    To see if we can determine which cornet sounds better? Or which mouthpiece makes a better sound, regardless of the cornet? Or both, or to see if we could pick out by listening to the most effective combination of cornet, mpc that you tested?
    Unless I'm missing the point, it looks like your testing two unknowns simultaneously. I would want to know what the dependent and independent variables are throughout the study.

    CADB and I´m not hearing much difference, for my brass ensemble all 4 versions would be a huge improvement :-)
    my understanding would be 2 and 4 to be the rich sound of the expensive cornet and the mouthpiece adding more or less air noise to the sound;
    I read about the intonation difference: not hearing much of that, so my ears are obviously not that good, as I would wish them to be

    Le son d'un cornet peut être bien différent du son d'un autre cornet comme le son d'un Yamaha et celui d'un OLDS Ambassador, l'embouchure est également très importante car c'est elle qui assure en partie la tension des lèvres, l'utilisateur est également très important car c'est lui qui est la source du son. Au final on aura un cocktail de 3 variables (cornet, embouchure, utilisateur), il m'est déjà arrivé d'obtenir un très bon résultat avec un instrument bon marché comme un résultat quelconque avec un instrument couteux. Dans certains cas assez rares le cornet ne permet pas une bonne émission du son et il est possible qu'il soit faux comme certains Bugles.

    • @fmonky
      @fmonky 7 років тому

      Bryson H Grace notes to sound right just need proper air, as well as using the valves quickly. I mean if you don't have a good "attack" of the grace note then it won't come out, and even though they are short they take as much air as a full note to come out, just for a shorter time. And also the valves have to be in the correct position really quickly or it will sound half valved/not come out right. Just my input hope its useful

    • @EnglishTMTB
      @EnglishTMTB 7 років тому +1

      Pro tip: Using the same harmonic often helps.
      So let's say (for example) you're doing a grace note which is top space E to your proper note on a top line F - if you just use standard valves (E=open, F=1st) you're actually moving from an E open pitch to a G open pitch and compensating down with valves to create the F... If you use one of the alternative fingerings and play the E on 1st and 2nd valves, and the F on the standard 1st valve, you're actually using the same harmonic (which would be G open) and using valves to bring down to pitch.... Because you're using the same harmonic, it'll be cleaner 99/100.
      (The previous posters tips are excellent for general playing also, and would help here... I'm kinda taking correct playing as a given).

      If you get decent enough results with what you use now and don't feel it's fighting you too much then I wouldn't worry about it. Besson cornets tend not to play great with Bach mouthpieces but if you're making progress don't worry about it

    • @EnglishTMTB
      @EnglishTMTB 2 роки тому +1

      Unfortunately, yes - it's BADC.
      It's interesting, I think most people listened and ascribed a lot of the major differences to the instruments - the mouthpiece is really important, far more important than most players realize, but because we almost all use decent mouthpieces that tends to be off the radar.
      In this case the mouthpiece sets the tone - the expensive one is a Denis Wick (visible earlier in the video) and those tend to be quite dark sounding and particularly free blowing.
      The brighter sound and tighter slotting (less fluid runs) on the cheap mouthpiece in clips #1 and #3 show this.
      The clips can then be listened to again to separate clip #1 from #3 (both on cheap mouthpiece) and to separate clip #2 from #4.
      Again background knowledge comes into play, but on subpar brass instrument designs the top space E will sit flat and the G atop the staff will go sharp - in the clips, you can hear this is you're listening very carefully, but more importantly the fluidity through the run is much clearer on the better cornet where less manipulation is required - it's less obvious with the more expensive mouthpiece, but you'll still hear it if you listen back.

    • @EnglishTMTB
      @EnglishTMTB 2 роки тому

      I'm not sure whether you might've mixed up C and D in the writing - the articulation is more consistent with the better mouthpiece (less clips), partly because the slots are more predictable with a better mouthpiece.
      Still, all of this is only as good as Trent's playing and the microphone BUT, I've done this twice (4 years apart) and got it right both times.

  • @EnglishTMTB
    @EnglishTMTB 7 років тому

    Tricky....
    I think the mouthpiece dictates the tone more than the instrument itself in most cases - so I'm assuming that #1 and #3 are the cheap mouthpiece (which from the looks of it isn't a Wick clone - so the Wick will be noticeably darker - on these two clips the sound is brighter and more brittle).
    I'm gonna go with 3=D and 1=B on the basis that #1 is more resonant on the top G than #3 - top G going sharp (and having to be lipped down - which kills the resonance) is a typical "bad" note on a bad instrument and the loss of resonance implies that that's the worse instrument for that reason.
    So that leaves #2 and #4 with "C" and "A" - the better mouthpiece... much less to choose between, but there's a couple of little hins that sugest that (probably) #2 is A and #4 is C.
    So my prediction:
    1:B
    2:A
    3:D
    4:C
    (Ofcourse, the test is only as good as Trent's playing and the quality of the microphone being used.... it's also much more difficult to tell when only one instrument is played at a time - duet recordings of each would be much easier to tell, I think).

      Nice and cheaply... Clip #4 is the "expensive" mouthpiece and cheap cornet.
      I wouldn't, personally, but that's up to you.

      BADC, there's another video with the answer.
      I felt it was pretty clear, but I made a couple of assumptions that many wouldn't necessarily have had the knowledge to make.

    Sorry, I don't play cornet, this is just a guess - I very rarely here cornets in person, as well.
    Maybe if it was a trumpet?

    To me, at first hearing, no 1 is A, the rest i don't know but all sound lesser to me. I see almost nobody agrees with me. I'm a once upon a time trumpet player...about 50 yrs ago!

      I agree with you. I guessed ABDC. Lots of people saying that 2 is A, but what was are least clear to me was that 2 had the cheap mouth piece. I'm no trumpet expert though. Hmm...

    My guesses:
    1) cheap cornet + expensive mouthpiece
    2) expensive cornet + expensive mouthpiece
    3) cheap cornet + cheap mouthpiece
    4) expensive cornet + cheap mouthpiece
