Yes, I agree, yet some historians still prefer to ignore their presents in History and the value they brought to the counties they invaded and finally conquered. The historian Dr Pyror refused to acknowledge that Britons, alone, developed Britain, after the Romans withdrawal from the Island. His perspective is very shallow and makes no reference to the Vikings in Britain during what some, including myself, during the "dark ages".

This is a lovely change from the stereotypical depiction of seafaring raiders burning and killing as they went. The skill of the Norse as diplomats and traders was immense and it's refreshing to see this in a documentary.

yeah it's quite the rebranding effort to gloss over the wrecking and looting and human trafficking efforts of the Vikings. Putin is probably looking for a company to cast his efforts to defeat the Nazis in Ukraine and bring peace and happiness to the world. maybe the folks who did this video are available.

The Vikings are underestimated in many ways, they were among other things bodyguards to the Emirs/Caliphs. And there special view of the world made them political savvy, when they had simple but egalitarian rules of law and settled larger disputes by "Ting", where all adults had there say in the matter ( a democratic variant ) where the punishment/payment of lost value were settled after the guilt issue. They were also very open to other faiths/religions.

How nice to see the Vikings shown as they really were, raiders and warriors yes, but also explorers, traders, settlers, people who changed the face of Europe, and travelled further than anyone else before them or after then until the 'Age of Discovery' centuries later.

As a descendence of vikings, I feel discusted about the way my ancestors are portrayed. They were, if anything, vain. You would NEVER see a viking dirty if he or she had an oportunity to bathe.

    • @Adara007
      @Adara007 3 роки тому +6

I feel similarly. The myth of the Norse as dirty primitive raiders is unfortunately in part due to Hollywood and before then to the way a Muslim writer portrayed them. Presumably, because they wouldn't become Muslims he portrayed them as 'dirty barbarians'. I remember coming across an account by an English nobleman kept in a large Viking museum in Denmark in which the nobleman went on at length in astonishment about how clean thee Norse were, bathing daily and washing and always combing their hair etc.! I wish the stereotype of the Norse as dirty barbaric raiders was eradicated but even the recent series "Vikings" hasn't altered many people's ingrained ideas about the Norse.

From the unset the Vikings weren't obsessed with ethnicity or tribe or whatever bs. Basically anyone could join. Though most recruits came from the North Sea coast regions. Norse, Swedes, Jutes, Angles, Saxons, Frisians, Lombards, the occasional Celt, what we now call Slavs etc. Like still found in the name for Russia, as the old Norse word for 'men who row' is Rus.
If they could have consolidated this unification they could have created an Empire even mightier then Rome and our world would have looked very different today.

What disappoints me every time is the dirty and drab clothing they keep using in these productions. Have these producers never seen the traditional clothing of these people? I don't think there is a culture in human history that didn't value beauty and that didn't attempt to express it through clothing. Yet we are constantly shown pre-renaissance people dressed in the equivalent of potato sacks.

Wrong - they don't simply "reupload old documentaries and just put their intro in front of it" - they license old documentaries so that they can be published again. The documentaries come from a variety of sources ranging from big well known sources like the BBC to smaller productions - all of which are licenses from whoever owns them so that they can be legally published here.

Whilst being open to other faiths was part of the success of the Norse it also proved their undoing, especially in regards to the rights - and rites - of Norse women. Most Norse women had equal rights under law, many learned to fight and were buried with their weapons. Viking women who were oracles or bards held more societal power than the male chieftains. Unfortunately, with Christianity the rights - and rites - of Norse women disappeared.

Good video from Skjalden on the subject -
      ua-cam.com/video/G8c062E3Fgc/v-deo.html
You'll find some other stuff on, (in no specific order) @Metatron, @Lindybeige, @Tod's Workshop, @Scholagladiatoria, @Skallagrim, @History with Hilbert, and if any other channels come to mind I'll let you know.
Obviously UA-cam channels aren't the only, (or arguably the best source of information according to some) but they are accessible, and IMHO the standard of information is really good.
There's a chance that some of these channels will have conflicting ideas, but nothing is set in stone, and our understanding evolves as new discoveries are made.
I think it's fair to say that costume designers in theatrical productions have decided on a Viking 'look' which might not be accurate, but could have been settled upon because of other factors, such as cost, availability, directorial decisions etc.
For instance, you'll rarely see lead actors wearing helmets/face protection because the audience wants to see their face - no point paying big money for someone if we can't see them....in battle.
The sword worn across the back is a trope we see in just about every historical drama, even though there's no evidence that anyone ever did so - looks cool though.
(How would you sheath and unsheath a sword on your back?)
Likewise with chainmail being worn without a gambeson, or a mail coif being worn directly on the head without padding - padded hood/arming cap.
Sorry - I went a bit off topic.
I hope you find the information you're looking for ✌️

    • @roderickclerk5904
      @roderickclerk5904 3 роки тому +2

@@dogwolf1135 a lot of warriors wore no armor. I nice tunic or taplow style coat would be an upper garment. Pants and leg wrappings (winningas) would be lowers. A utility style belt to hold a seax, supplies, and maybe suspensions for a sword or axe. Of course this would be a lower class warrior who carried a spear mostly. Did leather armor exist? Maybe. But it didn't protect well and its heavy. Better off without it.
Higher class guys had better equipment. Towards the later end of the Viking Age whole armies (fyrds/hirdmen) were outfitted with armor and at least crude iron swords. Swords were not as rare as people think. High quality steel swords, unlike iron, were not as common for only the wealthy could afford them. As in wealthy I mean a thegn, jarl, earl, retainer, yada yada. Armor for higher class soldiers could be really good gambescon. Chain or ring mail. Variations of scale armor which does use some leather underneath. Helmets and coifs. Metal strappings for the forearms and shins.

What a joke, Helena Victor seems to want it both ways; woman are dominated by men and their status in society is greatly diminished through Christianization. Yet later, she wants to present how important, powerful and strong women were in relation to the State and politics over the coming decades. So which is it? Whichever one supports her political or social bias, at the time she speaking, I assume. You could make the argument she was speaking primarily of the lower classes, but then why were women one of the main driving factors in the Christianization of their societies? Christ was far more of an egalitarian than Odin. Odin only accepted warriors, who died in battle, to feast with him inside his great hall in Valhalla. Which exclusively means MEN, despite what the "History" channel and their series "Vikings" might wish to portray.
Otherwise, I've truly quite enjoyed the series, thanks for the great content.

So basically the Saxons under Harold defeated a Viking force in England just days prior to losing the country to the Normans under William the conqueror. There was already a Viking presence in Scotland and Ireland. England had already been under the "Dane law". So, with the Norman invasion, England was once again lost to the Vikings who had adopted Christian customs. That is of couse, until the recent invasion of brown people from the south who could care less about other people's societal standards. England, a land up for grabs since Julius Caesar's little "visit".

This documentary is terrible. It tells us little about the Vikings and descends into a lot of feminist tripe. Women's "power" is dictated by biology much more than culture or religion. I also sense an anti Christian vibe, even though the conversions are presented as voluntary, somehow it's made out that Christianity was some sort of aggressor, and a regressive religion at that. Typical of academia and media today who insist on looking at history and people's of the past through their own "progressive" lens.

🙄🙄 why such a huge focus on women. Ugh. Two feminist females and a beta male. I hate these new docs can we never have normal documentaries again? What is this adamant focus on women ..sick of it

Great. And how wonderful that the actors weren't from the Middle East or Africa. And not too much feminism and nothing about LGTBQ and such.

Would have liked to watch this but it's trying to be a drama.
I prefer straight history documentaries, presented by an actual historian rather than a voiceover by an actor, with lots of naff moody shots of actors in costume and CGI effects.
    Big switch off.
    Never mind.
I'll know not to bother with this channel again.
Each to their own but this is not for me

Learn reading, that helps. With a bit of practice you can read *and* watch at the same time. Or learn French, then you won't need to read either... And you can stop whining like a cranky toddler.
What do you want? Only English speaking historians and scientists?! On a topic that isn't even about English speaking folks?
