  • Every time I think about how this game could have been the best battlefield of all time instead of the lukewarm rug pull that it was at launch a tear runs down my face.
Today, I decided to see if I could squeeze a little bit of worth out of the game a couple years after release.
I think if Battlefield Portal launch as a free to play hub game that connected all new and past BF games together this game and the franchise would have achieved greatness.
Sad to see games studios drop the ball time and time again.

The specialists and the unsatisfying gunplay is what breaks the game for me. The lack of military jargon.

I agree, some things just feel off. I feel like a big part of it is a lot of the old battlefield devs left and joined Embark Studios. The Finals feels more like the old battlefield games.

Battlefield 4 is one of the most beloved battlefield games from the last 15 years -
When it released it was BROKEN, the netcode was dire, like you could empty an entire clip into a person standing still for them to turn around and 1 tap you with seemingly one bullet.
Or watch as the shanghai tower collapsed and bricked your console or BSOD'd your PC.
It took MANY years for DICE to finally fix the game and make it playable.
yet when you look back on it, you know all the jank and issues existed but what remains is a shining example of what a great Battlefield game can be.
This is unfortunately what DICE seem to be good at, not making great games to begin with but releasing a concept and adapting it to work over time.
All the major releases after this suffered with this issue, less so with BF1 though it certain had its issues and revisions.
Battlefield 2042 is not the greatest game of all time and certainly has issues some glaring some not so much, but the movement system and gunplay have been one of the BEST examples of AAA shooters in recent years. The TTK is still a little too fast for my liking but overall I find it to be a pleasurable experience to play.
I've played Battlefield games since BF1942 - Played Vietnam, BF2, BF2142 and BF3, 4 - I didnt play much of Hardline wasnt for me - Along with BF1 and BFV - In every game DICE tried something new and different in terms of Class roles, what each class got access too, or what additional guns classes had access too - When BF4 released and allowed all classes access to DMRs Shotguns and Carbines people decreed how "this is a departure from classic squad systems" etc etc - But it worked, BF1 strayed away from traditional unlocked and forced a rigid system of attachments and combinations as variants and BFV introduced essentially weapon perks to help challenge the community.
BF2042 is at its core and always has been a BATTLEFIELD game, the specialists were in my opinion a very nice addition to a dying franchise, that allowed the devs some freedoms and interesting new gameplay mechanics and systems that hadn't been done before.
If you want to get your _"moneys worth"_ my advice would be to throw yourself into the game, test combinations of attachments on guns for different scenarios and with the Plus system tailor your guns to work in different scenarios.
But this game for all its jank will be remembered by those who loved it as one of the best games DICE have made in a long time.
I think its probably similar to Hardline in that respect a niche audience who love its new take on the Battlefield Genre :)

I hear ya, I play Battlefield 4 at launch and remember the jank very well. My biggest problem with 2042 was the lackluster maps due to the focus on 128 player gameplay.

I think dices greatest problem with 2042 is this. They decided to loosely chase trends so it didnt appease either side. But honeslty my two gripes are these 1. Each bf game brought a unique feature. But they never add upon that. Could you image a game with all the battlefield games traits. 2. They continue the trend of removing team work from the games. There used to be squad leads and comanders who could call unique support and talk to other squad leads.

Yeah, I remember there used to be a chain of command with comms commander could speak to all squad leads, then squad leads would direct their squads to complete objectives designated by the commander. Now its just in game chat with your own squad and that's it at best.

Its definitely not as bad as it was at launch, and I've found some hours of fun on it, but it does feel even a step back from BFV which also wasn't the greatest.

I agree I was hoping with the cancellation of expansion content for BFV that 2042 would be good at launch but no. Dice has a record of releasing bad games and fixing them a bit by the end of life.

if they just reskinned BF1 with modern guns I would've been more than happy. that was peak BF with 4 close behind

BF1 had an iconic style and BF4 is still the undisputed champion of the franchise

what really killed this game for me is the awful netcode and desynch issues. some games I'm killing in 2 bullets others it takes nearly a full mag.
