Your teacher is right. When you start your wing with a deep bend in the knees, your hips will naturally be sent backward/behind you, like you're sitting in a chair. Then when you jump off to go into your wing, you want to send your hips slightly forward, lifting your legs and letting the movements come from your feet/ankles. Hopefully that makes sense!
