I have a Cystic Fibrosis, so had the IQ air before I got a cat... We just got a kitten and I don't have any problems with fur and dander in air. I'm also extremely allergic to cats, so the IQ air has made it possible to live with one. Also it's pretty quiet, kinda like white noise, at lower settings I don't notice the sound. Awesome you did this review!

The noise level depends on the 1-3 settings with how hard you want the machine to work. You can also upgrade the filters and get one better for pet hair and smells which is a must have in my home. I noticed the air seemed lighter and easier to breathe when running the machine for the first time. Works great every time. Highly recommended!

Great review we have the Winix 5500-2. We just set it on Auto (the default) and let it run 24/7. it usually stays in the low fan settings only moving to medium when it senses an odor or smoke. I checked the wattage that it uses on this auto setting, 5-7 Watts and 38-42 db so it's a tiny amount to run and quiet too. To test the air quality sensor a little air freshener sprayed at it at 6 feet let's you know it is working.
I have a 6500-2 at my parents house, and the auto function is worthless. My dad smokes in the house and the light stays blue and the speed at low, despite him sitting 4 foot away chugging down some cigarettes. I run it on high and call it a day.
Winix 5500-2 - have this as well. I keep it in the vicinity of the litter boxes and works amazingly. a couple of months ago, my apt's electricity went out and I forgot to start it for about a week. I cleaned litter per usual, but I ONLY noticed the item was actually off because of the difference in odor over those few days. Highly recommend.
2 days in with my Levoit 300S and Lovin' it. Just started to get cold at night so windows closed and instead of waking up in a stuffy room it was very fresh. I couldn't even tell there was cat butt near my head. This will keep my 240+ sqft room clean when the cali-fires get bad as well to keep my new high-end/fan-heavy Computer. Great price , can be very quiet and has great 'smart' features.

Jenna, I love hearing that the reviews are timely! So, the 211+ is the one that I've seen rated highly, and while automatic speed adjustment is nice, it's not something you need, so I didn't view this feature as being an essential add-on. I do find the colorful lights fun and entertaining (watch it change when your cat gets a little gassy!), so if you're interested in that, it's certainly worth the extra $40.

Hadn’t heard of the Purrified Air system. The odor absorbing cartridges contains 2 materials sometimes used in aquarium filtration. Very interesting!
Austin air is what I got... works great, smells like fresh clean air
I have the Winix HR900 and works great. Several friends who are allergic to cats haven't had any issues but it doesn't collect all the hair though.
Good review. Some other good ones are the Honeywell HPA600B, Austin Air, and Rabbit Air A3. Also, important to buy a good quality vacuum with a hepa exhaust filter. I have the Miele C1. It's awesome.
I bought a Honeywell HPA3300B out of desperation when I turned it to be allergic to the pug I adopted who constantly sheds. I would NOT recommend it. The air definitely 'feels' cleaner but I am still affected by allergies running it on turbo 24/7.

I had the Wnnix before I got my furbaby & just started to purchase their pet filter to put on the 5500-2 as it's compatible. I'm so thankful for that and I can definitely tell when "she" isn't on!! Affordable enough to for me to get a second as my kitty has FeLV (or not until proven otherwise🙌🙏) & the extra air quality is good for him too!

Though I like the winix. It needs a good vacuum periodically.

Hi, I noticed that the Levoit Air Purifier is basically hollow in the middle do u think it would be a bad idea to place the purrified air filter media inside of it to get the same effect as the purrified air filter but with a levoit? I would still keep levoit filter there as well. I have a bunny and their pee is very potent, the hay gets dusty and of course she sheds so iI was looking for an air purifier for my small space that deals with dust, hair and her smell (my space is only 90 sqft though I will move to a studio apartment this summer likely to be 200-ish sqft). To me it just makes sense that a litter box air purifier would be motion activated and then stay running for a certain period of time or could be adjusted to run for a period of time that the consumer sets. Rather than having to leave it running all day long. BUT I didn't know an actual litter box air purifier existed so thank you for that!
I agree. You could always connect it to a motion sensor/timed- circuit...a little tricky to hook up, but just a thought.
Hi, Bob from Purrified Air. We set the Purrified Air filter to run continuously because odor is being generated any time there is waste in the litter box. At 12 cents per kilowatt hour, it costs about $4.00 per year to run 24-7. The only time you might want to shut it off is when a cat is skittish about the low sound of the device. We have a sensor in development which will shut off the filter for 1-5 minutes when a cat approaches.

I test as allergic to cats. The problem with the test is that I am allergic to some small percentage of cats. Believe me, the few that I react to are horrible. It would qualify as torture to force me to be around them. It's not painful, but my eyes and ears itch enough to drive me around the bend. If you have this reaction but really love kitties, research the different breeds. I understand that some are better than others. I just know that only about 2% of cats effect me.
We have that problem in our house too but found if you feed them high protein, grain free mostly wet food that cuts back on dander allergies👍😊

I actually learned from a recent allergy test that I’m at a level of 65.70 for cat dander! High is about 17.51-50.00. So I’m very high all the time from my cats xD. I don’t feel a thing though, have had cats for over 22 years!
Huh, that's fascinating to know! Is it possible that you've gotten used to constant symptoms and don't recognize them? Regardless, it's good that you've not noticed anything all of this time. Imagine if you'd gotten tested earlier and missed out on having cats all of these years.

My older brother actually had pretty bad allergies to our first cat, so I’m gratefurr it doesn’t get to me :D I do have asthma but it only really kicks in when the air quality gets bad here. Recently we’ve had a lot of smoke in New York City due to the fires from Canada. I mostly just get a bad headache though🙀. I’ve also been hiking since I was 9, so that makes sure my lungs get a lot of good exercise and being up in altitude always feels wonderfurr
What you feed your cat will make a difference in allergies as well. If you stick to grain free, high protein mostly wet food that will also help with allergies 😊. We have four cats in our house and couple of my kids are allergic. They rescued those cats so I can't get rid of them and before I even thought of air purifier, we went right to diet with some legit results. We actually still don't have purifier, but now looking because shedding season is insane with four of them

Wait so all of these air purifiers require filters which need to be separately purchased periodically as replacements? None of these purifiers have a washable filter?
Good question. There's no such thing as a washable HEPA filter, so you do have to replace them somewhere between once every 6-18 months(ish)...depending on your manufacturer and use. However, prefilters are washable, and some carbon filters are as well. Pellet-based odor filters can be rinsed out occasionally.
Thank you so much for doing this video. I've been thinking about buying a new purifier. Several years ago I researched purifiers for my boss. The last two were the ones that came out on top from my research along with the Molekule. I'll admit, I was disappointed that you didn't have that one. I was wondering why they are at the bottom of your list though. Is it due to price? I will now go and read your written version to find more info. Again, thank you so much.

Hi there! It's interesting to hear from someone who's spent some time researching air purifiers. Did you see Wirecutter's review of the Molekule or hear about the investigation into their claims? This brand has come under some pretty serious scrutiny recently and was found to be making some very questionable claims about their products based on less-than-ideal testing setups. It sounds like you probably did your research before all of this went down in 2020.
For someone who's interested in consumer products and air purifiers specifically, it's an interesting little drama. I'll put a few links so you can learn all about it.

Not sure about Wirecutter's testing. Other people that tested before them in real world circumstances (in home with pets and children) and got much better results. Although they did feel lower priced brands performed better than the Molekule.
They definitely went overboard with their advertising that they lost those cases. Sadly, many companies do this. Wonder why they got nailed for it and other companies haven't? I'm not talking about just air purifiers, but in general. I am glad this got pointed out though.
And UGH! too many myogenic men commenting on the older videos I watched! They hate Molekule because it is owned by a woman and state that is why it is inferior. They didn't even bother to find out who the owner was, but how dare a woman be the spokesperson!
Also just found out that Molekule's Mini purifiers have been cleared by the FDA. They use the same technology as the large ones, so I don't know if the large ones didn't pass or what. They also have one for hospitals that passed.
Guess we also need to add whether the purifiers have been approved by the FDA now also!

I need a good cool mist humidifier for my cat. I need to mist colloidal silver for his constant cough that he has. Yes we’ve been to the vet and he’s been on many antibiotics.
Have you ruled out asthma? Secondly, while I've not looked into air humidifiers for cats, specifically, any cool mist humidifier appropriate for people should be perfectly fine for your cat as well. I generally trust Wirecutter's reviews: www.nytimes.com/wirecutter/reviews/the-best-humidifier/

i wish i watched this before i bought my air purifier last month! i decided to go totally ozone free and got the tiny Hamilton Beach TrueAir - super cheap and surprisingly effective for my small bedroom
EDIT: i will say it doesn’t do much for odor but i am mostly concerned about air quality/VOCs. if you are concerned about odor, look for air purifiers with Carbon filters like Mallory references in the video
i just purchased the coway airmega and as much as i love it having 2 hepa filters and carbon built in. there are 2 huge issues. 1) you cant disable the chime. 2) you cat will touch the buttons like mine if they jump on it and lay. expect a 3am wakeup call with the purifier going from off or full speed :-(
I'm a little surprised, seeing how this is a cat specific channel, that you didn't take cats jumping onto it and pressing buttons into consideration.
Can anyone please tell me if Air Purifiers alter the air pressure in room? Ever since I switched the Levoit 300s I feel like my eyes getting blocked as in an airplane. Any of you having this feeling or it maybe a coincidence that my ears clogged for some reason at the very same moment?
Second question is that on the medium speed the device has like a very low whistling like sound. Not on low or high. I hear it only on medium fan speed. Its hard to describe this sound but its like a plane engine but on a low volume.

I know you said the overall best was the Winix 5500-2 Air Purifier but I was wondering, if I in general want some odor control for small rodent animals (rats / chinchilla specifically) and litterbox from the cats do you recommend just the Winix 5500-2 Air Purifier or the Purrified Air Pet Odor Filter or both? The room size is approx 13x13 where everything is. I also have a rough collie who sheds a lot. I' m just really stuck on what I should get.
It's a good question. I felt that the Purrified Air was much stronger for odor control, and it would do well in a small space like that. The Winix doesn't have as strong a focus on odor, so you might find that it doesn't address your main concern as well.
Looking at reviews on air purifiers Winix is one of the top rated brands. I just ordered a Winix HR900 Ultimate Pet True HEPA PlasmaWave Air Purifier and am looking forward to setting it up near my litter boxes. When I can afford it I am going to buy a second one to put near the other part of my apartment where I have another litter box set up.

Theyre forcing us to live here and won't help us move (disabled housing). Attorney is helping and got them to agree to buy an air purifier. I also have a Chihuahua. @@AllAboutCatsYT I was a little confused about something. The Winix model is equipped with a timer, so I was thinking it could only be run for those time intervals. Looking at the product website, it states the purifier can also be run continuously in Auto mode which will automatically adjust fan speed based on its sensors. These products beat the heck out of the cheap little gadgets from a big box store I was considering. Thank you so much for this review. Now I just need to find a place to set up a purifier, and I think it will end up closer to the ferret cage, as it is quite ... aromatic.
Hi Bridget, you can check the date when the videos were uploaded to see when those recommendations were made; generally, they are up-to-date, but some are older and may need to be refreshed. For example, I last created an updated litter roundup in 2021, and I've since found that Dr. Elsey's litter is a bit too sludgy and dusty. I'd recommend looking through the comment section to see what people are saying about the recommendations; often, video viewers will contribute more fresh knowledge than the review itself. Regarding humidifiers, basically any humidifier will be safe for your cat. Just make to sure to avoid the ones that involve essential oils and keep it out of your cat's reach.

@@rubij8704 2 from HoMedics and 3 from Winix (all purchased from Costco). I prefer the Winix because they are smart and remind me when it’s time to change filters and show me when the air quality is bad

I have a cat and am married now to a man that has cat allergies, and so are my step kids. We also have family members on my husband's side with cat allergies! I wanted to keep my cat until the end of his life, so we got a HEPA filter. Omg...does it ever work!! No one reacts to the cat anymore.

I’m wondering about the Mila air? Has anyone tried it out. I have 2 cats in an 865sq ft apartment. Mila is supposed to be able to clean 1,000 sq ft.
I have the winix one and the ionizer makes my head hurt you can notice when it’s on you kinda feel light headed it’s weird and if you look it up lots of other people have also noticed the same thing but it’s good when plasma wave is off .setting 4 is the only loud one too first 3 are very quiet
How you feel makes sense. Ionizers produce ozone, which is bad for your health. Ozone can cause respiratory problems and other health effects.
The Winx 5500 - many reviews mention that it has a huge negative due to something about the ozone (I don't fully understand it) but thay in result is harmful to pets. Was this not your case? Has this video been updated? I'm curious before I buy

The number of cats you have doesn't make that much of a difference in your need for air purification, so all of my recommendations here would be exactly the same whether you have one cat or three.

Yes, all of them are good at removing dust from the air. Dust is a large particle, and all of the purifiers shown here are competent in capturing large and small particles.

Good question! Unfortunately, I wasn't able to evaluate the cat hair capture abilities of these in any measurable way. Any good air purifier should be able to capture cat hair well. My only concern would be visible accumulation on an exposed prefilter like the one on the Blue purifier here.

We bought the enviroklenz with UV (great reviews not just on your video) and not one reviewer mentiined the "hospital smell it produces", not sure if it is the filter and it will go away but is terrible. Very desappointed, granted its been 1 week so far but didnt like it.
I've heard about this with other purifiers-the carbon filters sometimes accumulate odor and don't work as well (and may produce an odor) if they've sat around too long in the warehouse. I'd recommend contacting their customer support, as they may be able to help.
UV produces ozone that is the smell.

@@DeeDee-rr3sn definitely the larger grains, maybe mix cat, the track is ok, only w the honeycomb with bag style where you dump back in , took me a long time to figure that out, tiny grains litter are a mess I started with that and didn’t like
Can we talk about how the Purrified Air is just a glorified computer fan and filter. Don’t get me wrong I’m sure it works but the fan itself is dirt cheap to replace lifetime warranty or not. At most I’d spend 50 dollars but sometimes it feels like companies like that really take advantage of cat owners :/
