What we learned: 1) GGG was significantly out coached again. The first half was OK but not dominant. We attacked well and defended decently. However at halftime the German Coach & Team adjusted and absolutely dominated the 2nd half. GGG attempted to adjust (at least) but was too slow and didn't make the right choices. 2) GGG is still married to a 4-3-3, which doesn't fit our player pool very well. He needs to adjust to either a 3-5-2 or a 4-2-3-1 which will better suit our players. This would also allow Reyna the central space to help feed Balogun. 3) GGG is still slow to integrate new players into the team. Here’s my take, in the last 3 matches the USMNT have looked, lost, hesitant and almost like they’re handcuffed, they have not looked fluid or even good while in comparison to the Nations league where they looked confident and organized in defense, basically to me at least, Berhalter just cannot get anymore out of this team and he’s clearly out of his depth and cannot get the team organized on defense, I’m legitimately worried that they’re going to crash out in the Copa America
Our defense "kinda got exposed"?! That is a massive understatement. The defense got exposed repeatedly, consistently and didn't seem to learn from its mistakes. That group needs to be significantly upgraded, but at this point, I don't know where the players to do that would come from.
This game was Gregg's opportunity to get his first scalp. It was the game to prove he could lead the US to punch above its weight. And he failed miserably.
What did I learned? I learned that nothing has/will change until we get better coaches, leadership and management. Period. I do believe that we have the players to make a deep World Cup run in 2026 and even a deep Copa America run next year under better coaching and leadership
The biggest take from this game is that you keep fluffing up the USMNT into some kind of soccer super power and truth is they aren't even close to being a contender much less a top team competing for the WC.
Facts. But I'm not surprised. Cuz the US media and US fans like the tactical manager are always overrating this US team. When in reality they are mediocre.
Germany bodied us from the ball a bit to much which is a bit of a concern for Copa America. Even the weaker teams in south america are very "Grown man" and we will struggle against them.
This match confirmed that we have the quality in the final third to score on some of the best teams in the world, but also confirmed that this defense is not good enough to stop those teams from putting up 4 or 5 (in a real match Germany runs up the score). You're spot on with the analysis of underdogs who punch above their weight being defensive focused. It's a mathematical reality that games are closer and easier to sway with a single moment when both teams score less. We are not that kind of underdog. We do not have anywhere near the quality at CB that top teams do and it shows. Best we can do is hope some young guys get good runs of form right before the world cup because if we trot out (Richards who doesn't play) and a slow, physically degrading grandpa we will be roasted toasted and deep fried by every winger and striker worth their salt
I learned after last cycle, I no longer can stomach Berhalter ball. After a hopeful 1st half, Gregg just couldn't help himself. Dying to prove himself, his shit tactics right. They came out 2nd half in Greggs flaccid 433 pushed up FBs, played timid, scripted bunk soccer lobbing in hopeful crosses. Knew exactly what was coming. Nahhh, I've seen this one before. I'll admit it- I tapped out, turned it off went on with my day and am better for it.
You're right Filippo 1st half it was more or less a balanced game, I'm hoping 2nd half was an experiment, which system is better 4-2-3-1 or 4-3-3, it was clearly 4-2-3-1, the defensive lapses 1st half aren't on Gregg they were individual errors
That’s what I’ve saying, we wouldn’t get a better coach with the current USSF board because they don’t see the problems that make us a mediocre team and that we very much need a change of direction to improve.
I sometimes think Dest might want to consider a positional change. His defensive deficiencies seem beyond repair. He's proven to have all the tools offensively and not saying he could supplant anyone currently in the pecking order but maybe he'd be better utilized as more of an attacking option.
Niclas Sule is still on the roster and he is given back the ball on the opponents half of the pitch with authority for Christ's sake. Let that sink in lol.😅
I learned that as much as fans say that "this might be the most talented generation" the team is still well short of top nations like Germany, etc. I also think that the team is consciously trying to play a more progressive brand of football as opposed to the bunker and counter type. Maybe the personnel is more suited to the latter and not the former. If this was a game w/ high stakes maybe the US plays a more pragmatic style? Gregg has his flaws and credentials alone don't win games but man - the gap in terms of quality experience, not just playing in UCL games but being influential in them between Germany and US is immense! When the US closes that gap I believe the results will follow. Here's to continuing to invest in the game and building the base of the talent pyramid!
I hear you, I think an issue I have with this thought is that we have played more competitive games with better German sides in the World Cup before like in 2002 where we only lost by a goal in a tight game. If our talent pool is better than 20 years ago but we are playing less competitive against lesser German sides it just doesn't seem to bode well - and like our tactical manager points out we will have to eventually be able to pull off an upset and idk if Greg can do it.
The Dest criticism is uncalled for. Saying he was exposed by Sane and Musialah sounds crazy to me when those two guys expose everyone, every weekend. 😂 Too much of a knee jerk reactions for me.
It wasn't even his fault - Dest is a beast, he's phenomenal it was the coaching. Him and scali had no idea where to be neither did Richards as Gregg had them in some confusing gratuitous style NOT pressing at the 18
@@dmoney668 especially when Sanê has been in phenomenal form lately too. Apparently people aren’t paying attention to the Bundesliga. I don’t know. So many knee jerk reactions.
I dont understand this obsession with playing out the back at the moment. U.S. just doesnt have that quality of players. And then you play 3 offensive minded midfielders down the middle, with 3 forwards? No CDM to break plays or help shape the defense and then expect Germany not to take advantage on trasition..... it could have been 5-1 , if Germany had better quality on the final play. And omg, Sergino Dest defensive lapses, are a huge liability. Smh...... U.S. soccer federation hasn't learn anything appointing this guy....
There really is this absurd obsession to play out of the back.. The current USMNT personnel does not have the ability to play out of the back against teams such as Germany and the Netherlands etc.. Keep it simple and understand our capabilities as a team. If we try to play like this in the Copa, we won’t go far! Play to the abilities, we have speed upfront, we shouldn’t act like it’s a sin to send long balls upfront if we can’t build out of the back.
What I learned: 1. I learned I can feel really good about this game despite the loss basically for all of the reasons Tac mentioned. 2. We can play the more fluid 4-2-3-1 style with Reyna at the 10 and go toe to toe against top opposition, but we need Adams in the midfield against teams better than us. 3. If the goal (as Walker Zimmerman stated) is to win the World Cup, then our CB room is not deep enough for us to continue to exclude John Brooks for non-soccer reasons. CB is arguably our weakest position, and our current best CB is a little slow and will likely age out before 2026. It's time to mend fences. 4. The old flat 4-3-3 we played last cycle is garbage and will be punished against top quality opposition. 5. In the next game, if Reyna has to come off after 45, we should bring in a winger and move Pulisic to the 10, keeping the same shape and style instead of reverting to the old 4-3-3 from last cycle. 6. We're still over-reliant on wide play and overloading the wings to attack. There were several times when Balogun made a run centrally in transition, and none of our guys took a chance with a through ball. We just kept pushing it wide. 7. Berhalter may be learning. He certainly seems to be changing things up for the second cycle. We'll see if this continues, but coming off of the rigidity and crap rosters/lineups of the last cycle, it's nice to see. Twice in a row, he's called in really good rosters top to bottom; he's put out good starting lineups; and, after trying the old "Berhalter ball" a couple of times (most of the game against Uzbekistan and early in the 2nd half against Germany), he's changing things up midgame when it isn't working to more of the system we played during the Nations League, and the team performs noticeably better.
We learned that until we have a qualified manager we'll have to content ourselves with the occasional great play of individuals on the team. That was a *world class* goal by Christian Pulisic and it is the perfect example of the fact that there is *no* great performance that Greggy can't trash with his inability to adjust tactics. Every single quality manager will be able to do this to us until we have one too.
I learned we will need gio back at full health to begin keeping this new formation we have going and change from GGG ball. Also we need to begin feeding balogun in attacks to get the most out of him. And of course, I think Germany are back
Seems Gio has cemented his importance on this team. And yeah, the defense needs to tighten up bigtime. We definitely have the players like Balogun for an effective counter-attack.
Tanks for NOT making this all about GGG. We have real talent on this team, good on you to call out what we're so lucky to have as well as strategy and tactics that aren't working. One glaring omission... we need to fix the set piece issue--immediately. I've been following the US Team since the days of Tom Dooley and Ernie Stewart. In my memory, we were always dangerous on set pieces. And stingy as hell on defense. Maybe it's time to watch some replays from yesterday?
What was more surprising. USA losing 3-1 to Germany, or Canada losing 4-1 to Japan. Tbh I expected the Canada one bc we were missing a few players, don’t have a real coach, and played some old people for some reason
1. If we have Jedi then I’d start Jedi and Scally. Dest is a liability. 2. Hopping CCV can pair with Ream. Richards isn’t ready. 3. We have to feed Balogun and let him make runs and combine.
I think the result matters, since losing 1-0 to Germany is way better than losing 3-1. It'll be real hard to remain positive with a few more of these types of results (friendly or no-friendly). Here we go again, comparing usmnt to Brazil, smh....
No pressure on the ball on our own 18 was the common denominator for all 3 German goals. Scally and Dest were better than what is being said; they lock down the wings by any means but they weren’t awful.
I think Dest is just gonna be Dest, his spacey personality comes with concentration lapses built in. Against better opponents I’m starting to wonder if Jedi - Scally is a better pairing
Everytime I saw Balo, he was wide open. No one wants to pass him the ball. Also, Pulisic needs to learn how to use Balo better. He is consumed with the need to score instead of feeding Balo.
The Copa America is a South American tournament. There should be a cultural connection between the invited teams. That’s why teams like Panama, Mexico, Costa Rica, Honduras etc. are usually invited. Japan makes some sense because there are millions of Japanese people in South America historically, but other than that the only Asian teams you should invite are like the Philippines, Guam or Macao.
Look I am not a Gregg supporter be we looked good in the first half I think it’s a good lesson: Don’t play that mf 4-3-3 against ANY team of worth. And play Reyna at the 10. Also Dest gotta work on that mf defensive play
He didn't do well again this game, but his set pieces for Milan this year have been much better than his usual. I've caught myself saying out loud during the Milan games, "Why can't he do that for us?"
not tru at all lol this some reactionsry shi. its a coaching issue bro we have talent its not gettin used right ill admit nobody played great yesterday but dont expect changes to come without the coach changing. everyone was a defensive liability yesterday simple.
Because he was used the wrong way. Why in the world would the US coach ever think that would work against Sané and Mussiala speed and dribbling abilities? 😅
Part way through the first half I saw Balogun finally get mad and yell at some of the other guys about not getting him the ball. That was good to see. They did seem to pass him the ball a few more times after that. Unfortunately, he was usually about 40 yards away from the goal when they did.
5 things I learned Pulsiic has been and will only continue to our only potentially world class player. You’re kind of downplaying how easily he torched malik thioux who’s being closely linked with Madrid whenever he wanted. He was fouled beating the keeper, VAR would have over turned. Plus his gorgeous chance he gift wrapped to balogun, and all he needed to do was stick his neck out 4 Mote inches and would have nodded it into the net. It was a Chance high schoolers hury and so would Pepi. And yes he coasted in second half but all Through the game when he wanted to go somewhere no one really Stopped him a significant amount. Very Leao esc. 2 balogun needs a reality check and big showing or Pepi and Sargent when he returns will drop him. We need to stop catering to a 20 goal scorer in the French first division bc arsenal used his English upbringing to inflate his rediculus transfer value of 45 million. To even imply this dude is worth 20 million more than CP is absurd. He needs to get better/ serviceable with build up play, and finish crosses that Ferreira or vasquez would smash home 3. We don’t need high wingbacks to win. Proved by the first half wish how many great chances, (4) , Weston, gio and musah along with weah and CP are all we need and then some. So stop leaving our CBs exposed by sending the wingers up 4. Dest better watch out bc scallys coming for his spot in 2026. I was ground level watching scally sniffing out play after play and stiffling their front three and did absolutely nothing but basic offensive ball distribution and we looked just fine creating chances. Meanwhile dest took a nap, had a beverage and got caught dribbling too much. 5. Gios presence, ability to understand the tempo of the game and find his teammates or create anything off the dribble is the second most important thing for this teams success behind pulisics influence. If Gregg rolls with that 4231 again inthink we roll on Ghana and solidify that formation for months to come.

Greg always has to do some weird tweaking nonsense and can't just keep it's simple and never makes changes at half-time that are good Cameron should have been in there before and Brooks should be on that team
Joshua Kimmich and Serge Gnabri were not "in uniform" to say the least. They are the few ballers now who know too well how to reward back the ball for a goal to occur for sure. In the line of scrimmage or in other words in the area of uncertainty. Mexico and US playing style in midfield differ it is a must watch vs Germany.❤️
Im not a pro, but quite ....ok ,a good playing style is when a player with the ball has a tracker following behind to intercept a potential turn over near the opponents half of the pitch. Less of a hustle running back and getting injuries. True story. Forza.
I am a Gregg supporter, but i do feel this is a fair criticism of Gregg and I want to validate that because so much of the criticism comes from a place of obvious ignorance that it is nice to see something valid for a change.
Klinsmann is the only coach who could get you to the 1/4 finals 2026 and from there on the crowd needs to push you and you need to do something magical, something you never did before or thought you capable of. And once you reach the semi finals in a world cup, all bets are off !!!!!
No way we pull upsets, because that would mean Gregg would have to admit that other teams are better than us and go more defensive in his formations. Something he has yet to show that he can do...because he genuinely believes he can outcoach other teams and that our guys are talented enough to go toe-to-toe against the best.
I know our defense was poor in the second half but watching those Germany goals back in all mo, that was some elite passing in tight spaces. Very impressive. Also, almost every team has a big boost when a new coach comes in. You could see Germany just playing with a new sense of freedom and ease and that was predicted. Overall, defense has to be better especially through the middle. I know Dest had his issues but through the middle was a problem. I’d like to think Adams would help that a lot.
Sane and Sule had a half time sit down with the veteran like the legend Gondugan. Go figure. The comment section and the T.V commentators apparently do not know who this man is capable of doing " off" the ball it seems.....but ok.
What's scary is the parallels between the goals Germany & The Netherlands scored. Gregg clearly doesn't learn from his mistakes and isn't the man to move this program forward. We're going nowhere with him at the helm.

We need to pull off a Morocco and fire the coach.. the players need to do that…
The biggest take from this game is that you keep fluffing up the USMNT into some kind of soccer super power and truth is they aren't even close to being a contender much less a top team competing for the WC.
Exactly,the delusion is real.
We didn’t just learn Berhalter can’t adjust or view the other teams adjustments
Pulisic is the only positive in today's match. He is becoming m ore consistant with his scoring avility and is less injury prone
The transfer to Milan has been so good for him.
Turner was the most important player. He kept the US team in the game alone on half a dozen occassions.
After that goal he was pretty much ineffective. That’s been his issue for years.
Once again GGG looked like a deer in headlights vs superior competition. He’s a joke.
After the gol, Pulisic disappears. His dive was stupid
we need an actual coach
I learned after last cycle, I no longer can stomach Berhalter ball. After a hopeful 1st half, Gregg just couldn't help himself. Dying to prove himself, his shit tactics right. They came out 2nd half in Greggs flaccid 433 pushed up FBs, played timid, scripted bunk soccer lobbing in hopeful crosses. Knew exactly what was coming. Nahhh, I've seen this one before. I'll admit it- I tapped out, turned it off went on with my day and am better for it.
We need to keep playing with more world class teams
That barely happens 😂
@@joel801area2 Jurgen scheduled quite a few back in the day. We need to get back to that way of thinking.
yup and expose the ridiculousness of hiring Beerholder again
@@tripperdelaluna1 Jurgen pushed for it. USSF coddles bumhalter
1. Gregball simply doesn’t work, 3-1 against Holland and now 3-1 against Germany proves this
You're right Filippo 1st half it was more or less a balanced game, I'm hoping 2nd half was an experiment, which system is better 4-2-3-1 or 4-3-3, it was clearly 4-2-3-1, the defensive lapses 1st half aren't on Gregg they were individual errors
The tree is rotten from the top down. This is no longer a Gregg problem, but an association problem. Gregg is a pawn in their system, fire the board.
I would say this is the most overrated generation of US football players ever.
Him and scali had no idea where to be neither did Richards as Gregg had them in some confusing gratuitous style NOT pressing at the 18
@@dmoney668 I agree completely. More of a coaching/tactical problem than anything else.
@@dmoney668 especially when Sanê has been in phenomenal form lately too. Apparently people aren’t paying attention to the Bundesliga. I don’t know. So many knee jerk reactions.
Dest is a much better defender than people give him credit for
Not to mention dest was playing on his weak side!
History shows that GGG isn’t the guy to lead the USMNT to success in 2026.
What I learned:
How hard is it to play players in their natural position where they are efficient. Berhalter continues to mess with the system.
Lol thank your for mention 7-1 you’re the man!
I learned we will need gio back at full health to begin keeping this new formation we have going and change from GGG ball. Also we need to begin feeding balogun in attacks to get the most out of him. And of course, I think Germany are back
Yup. Our success in 2026 may come down to the health of a couple of players who have a history of injury problems.
Seems Gio has cemented his importance on this team. And yeah, the defense needs to tighten up bigtime. We definitely have the players like Balogun for an effective counter-attack.
I rather have Flick in charge of the USMNT than Berhalter 😂
Flick is actually a really good coach, see what he did at Bayern. He’s just not a national team manager, he works best as a club manager.
Shows how important Tyler Adams and Jedi are. Too bad Greg fell back into his "system" in the second half which doesn't fit his talent.
Too much shade thrown at Mexico 😂 non the less great video 👍

@@IsaacHenryinAK I never said it wasnt, bet your the type of guy that kicks the horse when hes down huh?
Always on his mind for some reason 🥶
The Japanese culture has always respected their elders
Turner is good as well
It's amazing how it wasn't all that long ago that we were having a #1 GK debate and different guys were getting starts. That debate is over.
No GGG has never punched above his weight! GGG is the very definition of mediocrity.
You ask if Berhalter is the right guy, lol. No one thinks so.
That shouldn’t even be an argument now a days 🤣
a right guy to take over the water boy position though he is probably even underqualified for that
Are we sure Dest is a fullback? I'd like to see him get some time in the midfield or the front.
It's been floated to move Weah to RB and switch Dest to the right wing. I'd love to see it at least tried.
@@IsaacHenryinAK3-5-2 is the solution
I learned that Scally surpassed Dest imo. I'd like to see Scally start and Dest be his backup, and/or potentially a backup to Pulisic and Weah.
This awful mexico like u said got a draw against germany playing a competitive match with the same line up germany used against usa 😂😂😂😂
When we have Jedi, Scally needs to start over Dest when we play good teams.
Hell no
Berhalter needs to resign.
Look I am not a Gregg supporter be we looked good in the first half I think it’s a good lesson: Don’t play that mf 4-3-3 against ANY team of worth. And play Reyna at the 10. Also Dest gotta work on that mf defensive play
@@TheNotoriousMACit won’t get any better as we move forward. We need a better coach
We need different leadership at the top, Gregg is only doing their bidding.
muy de acuerdo contigo fuera Greg
the fact that he accepted the position to return as Team USA coach proves that Beerholder is so full of himself.
That was a manageable game. All the goals that they scored were easily avoidable but of course....Egg Berhalter
I learned that CCV should be given the starting slot.
Lesson #8:
Pulisic needs to NOT take set pieces. It’s ~25% he delivers a good ball. Gio and maybe even Weah are better.
Ha yea for some reason he never gets the ball over/past the 1st defender or floats it
He didn't do well again this game, but his set pieces for Milan this year have been much better than his usual. I've caught myself saying out loud during the Milan games, "Why can't he do that for us?"
You learned never to underestimate us again.
I learned Dest is a defensive liability against big teams and that Musah and McKennie can't start together against big teams.
not tru at all lol this some reactionsry shi. its a coaching issue bro we have talent its not gettin used right ill admit nobody played great yesterday but dont expect changes to come without the coach changing. everyone was a defensive liability yesterday simple.
Dest spends most of his time in the wings and midfield. don't think he really like playing a defensive role
Same with Richards
Sergiño Dest es extremo, no es lateral
hay que apuntalar esa zona con un lateral más de oficio puede ser Reynolds o: Joe Scalli
Agreed. And I hope, above all other adjustments, that this gets worked on as priority #1 against Ghana.
5 things I learned
Pulsiic has been and will only continue to our only potentially world class player. It was a Chance high schoolers hury and so would
Pepi. And yes he coasted in second half but all
Through the game when he wanted to go somewhere no one really
Stopped him a significant amount.
He needs to get better/ serviceable with build up play, and finish crosses that Ferreira or vasquez would smash home
3. We don’t need high wingbacks to win. Proved by the first half wish how many great chances, (4) , Weston, gio and musah along with weah and CP are all we need and then some. So stop leaving our CBs exposed by sending the wingers up
Pulisic is not world class. He's overrated.
@@markmolino679watch serie A and check his stats and how they’re already better than his at Chelsea where he lead Chelsea in GA per 90 for 4 years. And he’s literally proving why Chelsea are idiots for not starting him all the time. Put it this way, Leao was talked up as a shoe in to be a ballon dor top 10, and pulsiic is gonna finish with just as many goals and assists PLAYING FROM HIS WEAKER side to accommodate Leao.
If he continues to perform like this for milan I think his value could go back up to 70-80 million worth

GGG had to resign.
True story. Forza.
Pulisic is for real right now

GGG won't get the best out of Balogun and Reyna....
wont get the best out of anyone on Team USA. We score and win games inspite of Beerholder not because of
Klinsmann is the only coach who could get you to the 1/4 finals 2026 and from there on the crowd needs to push you and you need to do something magical, something you never did before or thought you capable of. And once you reach the semi finals in a world cup, all bets are off !!!!!

if he even knew the meaning of respect, he wouldn't have accepted the position again. he is so full of himself
MAYT CROCKER OUT
Why does Gregg like to change what works 😭
Well said! He always has to make things complicated to put his dumb imprint on the game. Keep it SIMPLE that's why the temporary manager did better
GGG is….sigh
No way we pull upsets, because that would mean Gregg would have to admit that other teams are better than us and go more defensive in his formations. Something he has yet to show that he can do...because he genuinely believes he can outcoach other teams and that our guys are talented enough to go toe-to-toe against the best.
Defense needs to improve, 100%. Free John brooks! If there’s another John Brooks out there we should free him too.
Love that Pulisic scores a worldie and then just clocked out for the rest of the game like “welp, I did my part”
