    The RV-7 is an RV-7. And it's very good at being an RV-7 Not a 3D airplane. Not a Bush Plane. Not an EDF jet. Once dialed in, it's an incredible airplane. Pretty much unlimited vertical. Very aerobatic. Very predictable. Cons. The factory wheels make the airplane sound like a shopping cart full of aluminum cans. And the plastic landing gear mount is poorly glued in. The fix. Loose the wheel pants, put on 3' low bounce wheels and apply glue to the plastic landing gear mount. Done. Now you got a go to airplane that you'll always love.

      I bet you only have this aircraft and your protecting it with all your heart and soul so you don’t get embarrassed, and the thing is sure you can fix its problems. But it never should have come out of the box with problems.

    I appreciate the fact that you guys provided an honest opinion about a RC plane... most of the video's on UA-cam about RC planes seem to be either sponsored and/or looking to get sponsored so they give glorious reviews. Its great to get some opinions both positive and negative about a RC plane before I commit $299 to it. Keep us the good work for a great channel.

    Yeah the saylors were very sensitive on that one.....yes it's alot of effort but technically if your passionate about the hobby and always flying and making your wife record all the time it's more of fun or a "hobby" hence the term hobbyist and the planes are free for them.....80 hrs a week for the videos he puts out¿ Its just him flying around. Sounds like a real task to do...I tear down houses and literally sign through sewage and mold and rebuild 50 hrs a week and buy my planes and im always tired but never am I like "damn I have to go fly rc" and he gets revenue for it lmao.......crybaby

    This is actually a great plane. I've been enjoying flying it a lot. It's a scale version of the real RV-7 (which I've also worked on building), and it flys as such. Which means it has excellent all around flight handling characteristics and it performs "gentlemans aerobatics" very well. With larger tires (and wheel pants removed), it does even better on grass. I've been very impressed with how stable and smooth this flys.

    • @TailHeavyProductions
      @TailHeavyProductions  2 роки тому +3

      We don't disagree! Hence our precision acro section of the video ( 3:03 ) and mention of it being a perfect airplane for the Sunday morning pilot who likes a scale looking airplane ( 6:40 ). We reviewed this bird from our own perspective and flying style but still were sure to be honest about where she shines and is meant to shine. -Zach

    I liked the little RV-7, but then again my mission wasn't mainly 3D. I sold it before I got too many flights on it so no telling weather or not it would have had long term issues, but it was good for the 10 or so flights I put on it. No denying the flex RV-8 is WAY better suited for what you fellas like to do. 😁 Fun, funny vid. Also...saw Jon's vid...AWESOME of you to take him up. What an experience for him. Well done.

    The RV-7 is great as described in the finale . Yes there are better planes for specific tasks , but for the person who can only afford a few planes it's a good all rounder , choice and value IMO .

    Some channels seem to communicate that gaining understanding excludes having fun, and that the great goal of the hobby is being able to frolic around in a rat's nest of misunderstandings. I havent done reverse thrust yet. instead I: reversed the landing gear, ditched strut fairings and wheel pants , installed 3" foam wheels. The result is eliminated "tip-overs", saved a few ozs. (2 or 3) less weight, doubled prop clearance to 3". Plus it is now Grass field capable. Swapped out rudder servo for metal gear. Also you need to add a CFI to the right. :-) PS, seriously, you are a great pilot AND your video was lots of fun! Cute pup!

    Great video. I fly my rv7 fpv with headtracking. It's a blast. I run a 3300 4s hanging over the back of the battery tray. I have also glued the wheels back in and stripped a few servos. Still a fun plane 😁👍

    Thanks for the review and nice footage. I actually like the rv7 alot. I went from the apprentice to the rv7 and found it fast, maneuverable, and easy to land. The flaps work well and there is not much pitch change. You need a stabilized approach to grease the landings, but that's not a big deal.

  • @davide7209

    Hi Guys - I just bought my 1.1m RV7 - first flight with a 3S 2200 battery installed all the way forward - perfect takeoff and flight with very little trim inputs - landing was a full flap power on - landed on grass very well with a 3 point roll out. BUT the second flight was an absolute disaster as the standard Sectrum plastic geared rudder servo failed completely at about 3m off the ground - smashed the prop, engine mount got lose, the fuse separated infront of the elevator/rudder servo tray plus plus plus.
    The lesson here is NEVER trust a plastic servo if it ever jumps a tooth or has any play in it at all. Love the videos guys. Downunder Aussie.

    I’m relatively new to RC flying. I’ve really appreciated AS3X and SAFE mode. I hear lots of experienced pilots talking about how they don’t like even having AS3X on. My understanding of AS3X is it’s not supposed to interfere with your control inputs. So what does it do that makes experienced pilots prefer flying without it?

    I bought the RV-7 shortly after it was released. On paper, it looked like a plane I should love. I liked it just fine, but never fell in love with it. Then I saw a video over on Two Brothers Radio Control where they swapped the motor from a Maule M7. I decided to do the same to mine and it is definitely a lot more fun now. But with that said, I have to agree that it is a bit disappointing out of the box. There are certainly other planes out there that are a better value for price.

    • @TailHeavyProductions
      @TailHeavyProductions  2 роки тому

      Unfortunately, we don't plan to purchase a Draco having flown a few ourselves already. It's way too heavy for what it's trying replicate due to the weight of all the added plastic scale features. If you want a nice fun replica of Draco to fly around as a scale plane, it's a great bird. If you're looking for a STOL machine that you can fly almost anywhere and even do some mild 3D with, the Timber fits that shoe well. They definitely don't fit the same missions.

    I really appreciate the fresh perspective without any gatekeeping BS. I've been RC flying for years, but really only somewhat "seriously" for the last 2. It seems like so much of the commentary in this hobby is either "everything we test is awesome" or "every new product is beneath me". As for the RV-7, I adore mine, but I don't fly maneuvers anywhere near as advanced or aggressive as you. I fly much more scale with some mild aerobatics and the RV-7 gives me everything I need, from calm to challenging. I will say, though, that some low-bounce tires made a world of difference on pavement landings. The stock tires are awful.

      @@Tharkunify I went with the Dubro low bounce 2-1/4" in front (DUB225T) and the Dubro 1" rubber tail wheel (DUB100TW). • @adam_mawz_maas
      @adam_mawz_maas 2 роки тому +3

      The combination of size (the short 1.1m wing makes it very transportable without disassembly), battery pack compatibility and general flight performance make the RV-7 a win for me.
      I’ve dragged mine all over, and it always gets positive comments at any fun fly I show up with it at. It’s a smooth flyer, does classic air show and pattern routines well and is just fun to fly.
      The Commander and Cirrus both predate it, being re-releases. I’d not take the Cirrus over the RV-7 personally, as I don’t like the nose gear and the long skinny wings complicate transport. The Commander would be my choice if I was looking for something a bit bigger, but it’s just big enough to be annoying to transport wing-on and so it doesn’t fill the same easy to transport role. However the Commander is big enough that I’d probably pick a Sig 4-Star instead, they turn more heads and fly as good or better.
      All that said, tastes are personal and you like what you like. There’s absolutely nothing wrong with disliking the RV-7, it’s not for everybody. But it’s a staple in my hangar for sure.

    I don't have this model yet but it probably won't be long. I personally haven't had any problematic planes from eflite, only 1 from freewing which they sent the servos out quickly. I guess as with all mechanical and electronics there will be some lemons and some duds but it looks like most of the problems with that plane were simple fixes. Nice review, no talking down about the company and no sales pitch type antics just real and to the point showing upsides and downsides while still having fun with it.

    I've been flying the RV-7 since last spring. It is a beautiful plane and on 4S is a rocket. I have absolutely nothing bad to say about this bird. I made the bad decision of buying this as my second plane. 60% of my first several flights ended in some sort of damage, usually a broken propellor. My transmitter couldn;t activate the flaps unless I held down the bind button whenever I wanted the flaps UP, so I disconnected them. I got a new transmitter with a switch for the flaps, but that switch doesn't do anything. If I move the flaps plug into the only other available slot in the receiver, the flaps are controlled by the flight mode instead of the bind button. Want flaps down? Switch out of safe mode. Wanna do a barrel roll? Put flaps down.
    Also I never knew this thing had reverse thrust, how is it activated?? Let me guess, I probably need ANOTHER new switch that probably still wont do anything.

    The build quality issues are concerning though I wonder how much of this is wanting it to be something it's not? I haven't flown it but have thought about getting it since if I get a pilots license someday an RV would be my dream plane, but then again, this does sit in a odd sort of midpoint between a bunch of their offerings in size and performance, though I do like the look over the commander.

      The servo issues are endemic to the Horizon BnF’s. I’m batting about 50% with Horizon on servo failures per plane purchased (ie half the BnF’s I’ve bought have had a servo pack it in). Everybody who uses cheap servos has this issue (Flex gets a lot of flak for it for example)
      The elevator is probably a bit of a twist in the moulding, probably the part cooled too fast. Mine is not like that but no guarantees either way. The prop coming loose is cheap hardware, a bit hard to stomach when the plane simply isn’t cheap to buy. The gear was the landing combined with scale gear, this isn’t a bush/STOL bird and while the gear isn’t flimsy, it’s also not super rugged and keeping it scale has a downstream impact (vs the semi-scale gear used on the Flex RV-8, which is more rugged but helps contribute to the sport scale looks of the Flex vs the more accurate scale looks of the E-Flite)

      @@adam_mawz_maas Weird. I probably don't fly as much as you but I've not had a single servo fail on my planes. I'm probably at about 150 flights combined on my Carbon Cub and TTE, with about 50 on an F15, Ultrix, and a couple UMXs. Some of the servos make a lot of noise though. The linkages in steerable nosewheels however, not so great...

      We love our RV-8. The reason we love working with Flex is Quique said we can say whatever we want about their planes in our reviews as long as our feedback is honest. It’s very refreshing to find someone in the hobby industry who stands behind their products and isn’t afraid to let someone speak freely about them. We want nothing more than to maintain our integrity and be able to be direct and honest with the rc consumer base. If a manufacturer won’t allow that, we won’t work with them. 👍

    Good one Zach and Ben! People should really listen to your narration. There is wisdom between the humor. The title is a bit “click bait” (I get it, you give HH props and honest criticism) BUT your narration has many many gold nuggets of great advice. My favorite- “…stall was fairly docile… AS WITH MANY RC AIRCRAFT JUST LET GO! And a caution for pulling too hard and inducing a secondary stall. Gold advice for most aero modelers of all skill levels.
    Always entertaining, promotional and educational too! Thanks for the fun approach.

    • @darendth8594
      @darendth8594 2 роки тому

      In fairness to HH and you freely admit it at the start, you did not use AS3X which is a design feature of these E Flite models. Yes, it can mask some not so great design characteristics and they have gone over the top with that on others (Draco!) but it is there. Maybe a compare/ contrast with an AS3x/ SAFE select stock (BNF Basic) AR631? Just sayin.

    • @TailHeavyProductions
      @TailHeavyProductions  2 роки тому +5

      Thanks, Daren!
      Regarding AS3X - nope. They sell this plane without AS3X as well (plug and play). That's the version we purchased and should have made that clearer in the video. In fact, most all of their models come as a plug and play option. If it was an exclusive design feature, they wouldn't offer it without it. 👍 -Zach

    • @darendth8594
      @darendth8594 2 роки тому

      @@TailHeavyProductions Not suggesting “exclusive design feature”. Absolutely they offer as PNP as with many. I thought you guys made a very fair assessment with the version you purchased. In some of the E Flite designs AS3X and SAFE (I am a strong advocate for the technology) has been over used (IMHO) as replacement for encouraging better setup since it will compensate. Just conversation. All good.
